The CoCC and Haley BarbourWell, look who's hanging with the lovely Council of
Conservative Citizens. Haley Barbour is seen yucking it up with this despicable
band of racists. He claims not to know anything about the group. Whatever. I
suppose he will claim that he knows nothing of the confederate flag he has pasted on his lapel
pin either. (Thanks to Andrew Sullivan for the
pointer.) I realize there are many who say that Roy Barnes lost his governorship
over the flag issue but that's myopic and ignores the greater Republican trend
in GA. Barnes didn't lose because of the flag controversy. He lost because he
was a crappy governor. The democrats are sure to jump on this as further proof
of the innate racism of Republicans. So the question is this: Is Barbour really
a racist or is he merely pandering to these kind of loathsome figures for his
slice of the bigot vote? Neither answer is very flattering. And neither points
to the kind of judgment I would expect from an elected
representative.
