Arts Court Sign

The IFVA AGM and conference rotates around the country every year. For 2001 it was in Ottawa and took place here at Arts Court. I've always thought that Arts Court sounded like a place where people were tried for crimes against Art, but that's not the case.

Arts Court is an amazing building in the heart of Ottawa...maybe it is the heart of Ottawa. I gather that it was a provincial courthouse, but now it is filled with Art. There is the Art Gallery of Ottawa, SAW Gallery, SAW Video, Making Scenes, the Independent Filmmakers Cooperative of Ottawa, etc. There are permanent installations, exhibition space, offices, meeting rooms and great screening space.

It was a bit confusing to get around the building...after a while I found a few routes through building ... but there is an amazing concentration of artists and art in one building.

The most amazing thing happened outside on the grass in the courtyard of Arts Court with "Bordello Video." A combination screening, performance, and party it happened with perfect weather outside and great people all around. It was my last night at the conference, and it was a great way to end the trip.
