At Tully Hall, Worry Over the Pipe Organs Return
By DANIEL J. WAKIN

Alice Tully Hall is sparkling in the first months after its renovation. But a hole gapes underneath the glossy surface. The halls organ, a personal gift of Miss Tully herself, remains absent, dismantled and resting in limbolike storage in upstate New York.
Mark Bussell
The organ was dismantled and removed in 2006 ahead of renovations at Alice Tully Hall
The delay in returning the organ has raised the alarm among some organists. In particular, the chairman of the Juilliard Schools organ department, Paul Jacobs, and the organs curator, Peter Batchelder, have gone public with worries that Lincoln Center may secretly want to wash its hands of the organ.
Why would they not have returned the instrument when they reopened the doors of Alice Tully Hall? Mr. Jacobs, a prominent and respected performer, said in an interview. The question that needs to be asked is, Is it Lincoln Centers intention that the organ not be returned? <<Read More>>

SUCCEEDING IN CHURCH MUSIC

Why Dont They Like Me? I Played All the Right Notes!
I have been asked by our newsletter editor to share a few thoughts. I do not claim to be wise, but having played the organ for some 51 years and having held church organist positions continuously for over 38 years, perhaps I qualify as having some experience in our common field of church music.
As a teenager I was introduced to the American Guild of Organists and I have been a member for over forty years. As our culture has changed and continues to change, the work of the AGO and the principles for which it stands grow increasingly important. Each and every one of us is an ambassador for quality organ and sacred music. Read more ...

Tuning In to the Organ, and Not Just in Church

If anyone had told J. Michael Barone a quarter-century ago that the radio program about organ music that he was starting would still be going strong today, he might have dismissed the idea.
But this month is the 25th anniversary of Pipedreams as a weekly national show, distributed to public and commercial stations by American Public Media of St. Paul. Even Mr. Barone sometimes has trouble believing it.

A Once in a Lifetime Opportunity
Orlando Performing Arts Center |

Greetings!
Central Florida has embarked on a once in a lifetime opportunity! The City of Orlando has approved a multi-million dollar Performing Arts Center to be built in the heart of the city. Of behalf of the American guild of Organists we are asking you to encourage the president and executive members of the Dr. Phillips Orlando Performing Arts Center to be built in Orlando to include a grand concert pipe organ in their plans.
Every major hall has a pipe organ. Most recently, the Walt Disney Concert Hall, the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts and Overture Hall Madison have included pipe organs in their halls. All have had an immense impact on the communities around them making world-class performance venues.
A Pipe Organ would add a new dimension and over 300+ organ and orchestra pieces + 100s more organ pieces to the palette. Without it, these pieces have little chance of being heard in our community. A pipe organ would be a crowning jewel in the city of Orlando.
Your voice is crucial to the success of this project. Without your help this project will not be successful.

New Organist Fund
|
|
The Michael Cohen Scholarship Fund was established in 2008 by Michael's partner Carl Brown, his family and his many, many friends. The New Organist Fund shelters both permanently restricted gifts to named scholarships, and restricted gifts for the support and development of new organists. Each year, this fund provides scholarship assistance for talented Pipe Organ Encounters participants. Many young, aspiring organists benefit from this fund each year, some who otherwise would be unable to attend a Pipe Organ Encounters. More......
