In
1989 I was invited to run a Red Cross Blood Bank Collection in
conjunction with the annual Thanksgiving Road Race in Manchester, the
third oldest road race in America. I gladly accepted, not only
because I had been a surgeon for over forty years, but also because I
realized the importance of having blood available for medical
emergencies. My task was made easier by the fact that I could give
each donor of a unit of blood a Thanksgiving Road Race t-shirt. The
program began modestly but soon became the largest single collection
in the entire state. Today the Blood Collection program is an
integral part of Manchester's celebrated Road Race on Thanksgiving
Day. On the tenth anniversary of the program I was made Honorary
Chairman of the Road Race. The full story of the Manchester Road Race
is available at: http://www.manchesterroadrace.com.

the year I was honorary chairman.
