Simulations

Definition

A simulation demonstrates a procedure or concept that cannot be easily duplicated in a real-life setting.

Curricular Goal(s)

  • Enable students to conduct experiments
  • Enable students to visualize concepts or processes typically invisible
  • Promote understanding of hard to grasp concepts.
Uses
  • Internet-based simulations may be used to demonstrate concepts to a whole class or to individualize instruction based on student needs.
  • Enhance a theme or lesson.
  • Provide opportunities for non-linear inquiry.
  • Meet diverse needs of students.
Steps for Creating
  • Most teachers do not create their own simulations, however, doing so typically requires knowledge of a programming language such as Java or a multimedia application such as Director, Flash or Fireworks.
