Concept Builder

Definition

A Concept Builder uses web resources to help students develop and refine new concepts. This is accomplished by showing an array of specially selected examples, allowing students to construct or build the concepts for themselves, and using class discussion to further refine the concepts.

Curricular Goal
  • Develops new concepts when a topic is complex
  • Used when a simple definition is too abstract
    • Examples of concept must be available on the Web
    • A few critical attributes must be easily perceived
  • Engages students in higher level thinking
Steps for Creating
  • Link to 3 or more sites
  • Ask series of short questions that prompt students to
    • Look for specific details
    • Make comparisons
    • Find contrasts
  • Test students' understanding of the concepts with “non-examples”
