The activities below can be used with students while attending Great America for Physics Day, Science Day or Math Day. The collection is growing more complete, but will be augmented over the coming years to include labs appropriate for multiple levels of students, different learning outcomes, and different learning styles. These materials are also contained on the CD that is distributed by the park each year. If an "X" appears in the column titled "Word Doc", there is an MS Word document of the same web page activity. Additional resources are given below the table. |

Content Standards - We have referenced the activities in our printed packet to the California Science Content Standards. For teachers who need to justify the educational value of Physics/Science/Math Days. Teacher Checklist - Tested and true ideas for taking groups of students to the park. Stay Home Packet - A set of pages that might be used for students unable to attend Physics Day. To be used best, a videotape showing the ride both from the side and from on board would be desirable. Contests for Students - We will hold three constests for students during the 2005 Physics/Science/Math Days: a roller coaster design contest, an egg drop contest, and a buoyancy contest. The 2005 final rules are posted here. Graph Matching Activity - A page with five graphs from Great America. Match the graphs to the rides. A grading scale is included. Have fun! Spots - Paramount's Great America sets up several SPOTS around the park where one is a known distance (recorded on a sign) from a popular ride. Knowing the baseline distance, the height can be determined more accurately.
Electronic Data Center - a place where students can check out electronic data collection equipment to take on the rides. After riding, the data will be downloaded and the graphs printed for them. Help tables are set up around the park, manned by students from local colleges or high schools. Students can get help finding places or help with calculations. Most help tables feature hands-on demonstrations that enhance the enjoyment of Physics/Science/Math Days. |
