Fantastic Four

Come join us for a little math teaser at the Fantastic Four booth.

Supplies: (All will be supplied by Great America)

  1. A deck of cards with the face cards removed
  2. A piece of paper to write on
  3. A pencil
  4. A stop watch

Directions:

  1. The dealer will shuffle out four cards and show you the values. These are community cards so if more than one individual or group is playing, the cards can be used by everyone at the same time.
  2. Then the dealer will turn a fifth card over. The individual or group must use the four community cards combined using standard math notation to yield the fifth card.
  3. Once the fifth card is turned over, teams have 5 minutes to make as many equations as they can. If you complete three or more equations, you will receive a stamp and a score based on the formula below. You do not have to use all four cards in making your equation.

    Formula:

    1. Use two of the four cards, score 4 points
    2. Use three of the four cards, score 9 points
    3. Use all four cards, score 16 points
    4. If a mistake is made, score = 0

    Example

If the four community cards are 4, 5, 8, 2, and the fifth card is 5, then you can make an equation as follows:
    (8-5) + 2 = 5

In this example, three cards were used so the score is 9 pts.
