ROTATOR CUFF The Rotator Cuff is the name given to 4 muscles that surround and support the shoulder joint where the upper arm bone meets the shoulder blade. The name describes the job of the muscle group enabling the joint a wide range of movemen: rotation, and containing and supporting it by binding it together. The job is shared by the ligaments between the bones, linking them togerther. Unlike muscles, ligaments are not meant to stretch, so they are unable to contract back once damage is done. Any injury that destabilises the shoulder will affect these muscles and ligaments. For example falling onto the elbow or landing on outstretched arms. Once weakened, the problem is that without sufficient rehabilitation, the joint remains unstable and dislocation frequently recurs. People usually come to the clinic after this has happened, and they are fed up with an unstable shoulder and a repeating injury. Patient work all around the joint can assist it to strrengthen and be normally useable once more. One session will make a difference, three will get you well on the way to normal movement again.
