DISLOCATED SHOULDER This is a commonly presenting problem, particularly a dislocation that happened many years ago. It is a difficult injury to recover from, especially without physical treatment such as a course of deep tissue massage. The ligaments and tendons holding the shoulder joint in place, although very strong, are not as robust as the hip joint. This is to enable the huge range of movement that the human arm and shoulder are capable of, and due to the fact that we do not need to walk on our hands. Although people are always grateful that they didn't break any bones, the body is in fact able to heal a broken bone most effectively itself without any intervention, other than placing it where it needs to be to mend straight. Ligaments on the other hand once over-stretched need consistent help over a number of weeks to go back to normal. The 'Rotator Cuff' muscles that form the ring around the shoulder joint to keep it in place, can be helped to heal very effectively by careful remedial tissue massage. They do not heal back to full strength on their own. Patients usually present with a considerable weakness on the side of the old dislocation, as well as limitation of movement. It can be a bit tricky to get back to full working order, but quick progress is commonplace. One session will make a difference, three will get you well on the way to normal movement again.
