Tomite is a member of the Genbu Seven, celestial warriors following Genbu, the tortoise god of the north, and dedicated to protecting the Priestess of Genbu. Along with Hikitsu, they are the guardians of the shinzaho, a relic worn by the priestess of Genbu when she was in the world of the book. For her first wish, the Priestess of Genbu had wanted the land of the people of Genbu to be protected forever, and so Hikitsu and Tomite's spirits stayed behind to protect the land and the shinzaho from those who would try to take it.
Hikitsu and Tomite attempted to block the passage of Miaka and the Suzaku Seven, and subjected Miaka to a test of ability. Hikitsu froze Miaka completely in the ice, saying that if she was truly the priestess of Suzaku that she would find a way to break free. Tomite restricted the rest of the Suzaku Seven in a ring of ice to keep them from interfering. Miaka nearly froze to death, but with Suzaku Seven warrior Nuriko's help, was able to break from of the ice through her own hidden powers. It was only then that Hikitsu and Tomite revealed that they were merely guardians against those unworthy to take the shinzaho, and their spirits were finally able to rest knowing it was in good hands.
