Tenkou is a demon who is bent on ruling both the world of the book and the real world. He is the mastermind behind the plans to foil Tamahome (Taka) and Miaka's happiness and attempts to attack Tamahome by messing with his sense of reality and memory. Originally a prince in the book world, Tenkou was sentenced to death by his own country for studying the Book of the Four Gods for forbidden knowledge and magic. His study of the black arts, however, enabled his soul to remain free and eventually be reborn as a demon.
Tenkou encounters Miaka and the Suzaku Seven shortly after he hatches a plan to raise a new Priestess of Genbu under his control, as well as control Tamahome, reputable the most powerful and skilled of the Suzaku Seven. With the ability to grant life to dead souls, he recruits several persons to be his Demon Kings (Yousui, Hikou, Miru, and Renhou), promising them happiness and revenge, among other things, for their service. With these and his powers, he makes an attempt to dominate both worlds, something which brings both people from the past and present together in an effort to stop him and his servants.
