Tatara is a member of the Byakko Seven, celestial warriors dedicated to protecting the Priestess of Byakko from harm. Tatara is quite old, but his look is definitely that of a young man. This is due to his fellow Byakko Seven member Subaru's magic, which aged his body but kept the rest of him young. Tatara's mastery of magic involving seeds and plants make him a formidable warrior even though his age hurts his ability to fight. Originally, along with Tokaki and Subaru and the rest of the Byakko Seven, he fought to protect Suzuno, the Priestess of Byakko who had come from the real world. Tatara and Suzuno fell in love, but he was unable to be with Suzuno because Byakko would not allow that wish to be granted. Instead, Tatara became the guardian of the shinzaho, a holy relic with the power to help summon any of the four gods. While he fights bravely, he still carries the pain of being separated from Suzuno in his heart.
Miaka first encounters Tatara after she is captured by the Seiryuu Seven and put in prison with Tatara in his own tower. Yui is there as well - and she makes Miaka think that she has forgiven her in order to get the shinzaho from Tatara and summon Seiryuu. Tatara and Miaka eventually escape, and along with members of both the Byakko and Suzaku Seven, work their way up the tower to where Yui is. Tatara ends up fighting a decisive battle with Miboshi, one of the Seiryuu Seven - one which is instrumental in the Suzaku Seven's battle to stop Yui from using the shinzaho to summon Seiryuu.
