Tamahome is a member of the Suzaku Seven, celestial warriors sworn to protect the Priestess of Suzaku from harm. Tamahome is the first member of the Suzaku Seven that Miaka encounters, and also the one that she becomes closest to. While at first seeming to be a person caring entirely for money, we see that Tamahome is much deeper than first impressions may lead the audience to believe. His passion for good as well as his love for Miaka is one of the driving forces in the series. It is even found that his love for money is really motivated by his desire to help his poor family, who has, among other things, a sick father. He's also a talented martial artist and a fighter with incredible skill.

Tamahome first runs into Miaka after he saves her and Yui from a group of bandits shortly after they enter the world of the book. He then immediately asks them for money and leaves them behind after they cannot offer him any. Miaka was distracted by looking for some money to give him, and when she looks up, both Yui and Tamahome are gone (Yui was pulled back into the real world). Thinking that Yui was kidnapped by Tamahome, Miaka goes after him into the town, where she ends up being saved by him again. Tamahome becomes Miaka's companion shortly thereafter, in order to help her find a way home.

Tamahome's romance with Miaka doesn't become apparent right away. Gradually, Miaka's different attitude about the world as well as her personality grow on Tamahome, and while he denies it at first, he eventually admits his feelings about Miaka. Miaka is likewise taken by Tamahome's kindness and his spirit, and falls in love with him as well. Throughout the series, this love is tested in various ways for its strength and weaknesses, and Tamahome tries his best to protect the woman he loves. While Tamahome does encounter just about as much hardship as Miaka does in their journeys, Tamahome is nevertheless a determined individual who fights through whatever trials are placed in front of him.
