Subaru was a member of the Byakko Seven, celestial warriors sworn to protect the Priestess of Byakko from harm. Subaru is the wife of fellow Byakko Seven member Tokaki, who happens to be Tamahome's old martial arts master. In her younger days (pictured above) she had a mastery of sorcery and was a formidable opponent. However, in her current age of 107, her Byakko powers have diminished to almost nothing.
Subaru first comes into contact with Miaka shortly after the group's clash with Tomo, a member of the Seiryuu Seven. Subaru actually appeared earlier with Tokaki, and was responsible for helping to nurse Tamahome back to health when he was badly hurt by Tomo. She also helps heal Miaka as well, both physically and mentally. Unlike her husband, Subaru believes that the love between Miaka and Tamahome is possible and should happen, despite what they had seen happen between the Priestess of Byakko, Suzuno, and one of their fellow warriors, Tatara of the Byakko Seven.
Subaru and Tokaki accompany Miaka and the Suzaku Seven in order to get the shinzaho that they need from Tatara, and eventually end up restoring their youth (but aging their bodies on the inside) via Subaru's spell so that they can fight against the Seiryuu Seven.
