Renhou is one of Tenkou's Demon Kings, bent on taking over both the book world and the real world. With the ability to control the minds of others with weak will, Renhou is a formidable opponent with an expertise in manipulation. Much of his motivation comes from the desire to create a better world for himself and his older sister Miru, who he is having an incestuous relationship with. Originally ordinary humans, Miru and Ren were thrown off a cliff by angry villagers because of their sinful act. Wandering around as a soul in hell, Renhou got a second chance at life when Tenkou revived him and Miru with promises of happiness and a world that would not question their love.
Miaka first encounters Ren when he disguises himself as a fellow student and a transfer into Miaka's school. He becomes instantly popular due to his mind control powers and is eventually able to use the students to make attempts on Miaka and Tamahome (Taka in the OAV)'s lives. He eventually compels the students to make him student body president, and it is then that he makes his final move against Miaka and Taka, personally fighting them in a battle not only for Miaka but that of her schoolmates as well.
