Mitsukake is a member of the Suzaku Seven, celestial warriors sworn to protect the Priestess of Suzaku from harm. Mitsukake is an incredible and talented doctor who has knowledge about all kinds of sicknesses and the ways to cure them. In addition to this talent for medicine, Mitsukake also has a natural healing power that he utilizes to heal injuries. This process drains his ki and life force to do so, and so Mitsukake is drained every time he uses his power.
However, at one point in his life, Mitsukake's confidence in his own abilities was shaken. Mitsukake was unable to save his lover, Shoka, from dying of a terrible disease that wracked her with pain for days. At the time that Shoka came down with and was suffering from the disease, Mitsukake was in another town helping another patient. When he came back to the town immediately after finding out about Shoka, it was already too late. Shoka had died, and Mitsukake felt as if he was the biggest failure in the world. He became a hermit and a recluse, refusing to talk to or associate with anyone except his cat, Tama, and he became slovenly and unkempt in appearance.
It was in this state that Nuriko, Hotohori, and Tasuki found Mitsukake. Miaka had come down with the same disease that had claimed Shoka's life, and the Suzaku warriors' only hope was a doctor who would cure the pain. Unfortunately, Mitsukake was unwilling to help them - until they mentioned Shoka's name to him. Shoka was now undead - and possessed by a demon of despair who longed for pain and gave Shoka the ability to "raise" dead people into zombies. Masquerading as a healer, Shoka was in reality raising the dead people as zombies rather than restoring them to life. Mitsukake and the others race back to where Miaka lay on her deathbed, and eventually, Mitsukake is able to stop Shoka and reverse Miaka's fever, though the price he ultimately pays is to kill Shoka by exorcising the demon that had controlled her. Mitsukake then reveals himself as a member of the Suzaku Seven to Miaka and the others, and joins them in their journey.
Though generally a non-combative person, Mitsukake is nevertheless an asset to the Suzaku Seven, as his healing power is able to heal almost every type of injury. His kind and selfless attitude translates into his work as he is able to heal not just members of the Suzaku Seven, but others as well.
