Keisuke is Miaka's older brother, and he is a person that continuously tries to be a role model for Miaka. It is Keisuke that tries to re-focus Miaka when she gets sidetracked in the real world, as well as cheer her up when she is down or depressed. Keisuke's encounter with the world of the book is not a direct one, but it is nevertheless one that changes his life.
Along with Tetsuya, one of his close friends, Keisuke does not believe the story about the powers of the book that Miaka tells him. However, after Miaka disappears into the world of the book right in front of Keisuke's eyes, he finally begins to believe in the magic of the book. For the majority of the series, it is him and Tetsuya who read the actual story as it unfolds in the book, and also end up attempting to study its history and where it came from. This is a journey that eventually leads to the Priestesses of both Genbu and Byakko, and sheds some more light on Yui and Miaka who are also stuck in the book and become priestesses.
Keisuke, even though he only reads the book and does not participate directly in its action, is changed by the story that unfolds in front of him. Once a realist, the magic of the book and its story change Keisuke's views to that of an idealist, believing in things such as romance and happiness. The drama of the book moves him to tears several times in the series, and the fact that his sister is inside creating the story makes it all the more significant to him.
