Hikou is the childhood friend of Chichiri, one of the members of the Suzaku Seven. However, their friendship was plagued by a tragic event in the past. Chichiri's fiancee was also a childhood friend that Hikou grew up with. One day, as Chichiri was returning bringing his fiancee a gift, he walked in on her and Hikou kissing. Afterwards, Chichiri's fiancee broke off the engagement and subsequently killed herself. Thinking that it was out of love for Hikou, Chichiri was furious and challenged Hikou to a fight to the death. During the fight there was a great flood, and in the ensuing chaos, Hikou fell off a cliff. Chichiri attempted to save him and was able to grab a hold of his hand, but at that moment, a large stray rock was launched out of the water, directly into Chichiri's left eye, blinding it. The pain caused Chichiri to let go of Hikou's hand and he watched helplessly as his friend drowned.
However, Hikou did not completely die. Driven by his need for revenge against Chichiri as well as the weight of what he'd done, Hikou's spirit did not die off, but instead wandered until he as taken in by Tenkou, who made him a demon with control over the flood waters. Using these waters and his own powers, Hikou was able to manipulate people's minds as well. He did this with Tasuki, another of the Suzaku Seven, causing him to attempt to take Miaka away by force from Tamahome. Though he failed in this he still managed to capture Miaka, forcing a final confrontation with Chichiri. In the ensuing battle and the aftermath, Hikou revealed that he forcefully took the kiss from Chichiri's fiancee, and that she had killed herself because she was so ashamed to have even been touched by a another man. It was the guilt behind this that also was partly responsible for Hikou's spirit wandering.
