Chiriko is a member of the Suzaku Seven, celestial warriors sworn to protect the Priestess of Suzaku from harm. Chiriko is an extremely intelligent and gifted young boy with, among other things, the ability to read the stars and tell the future. His intelligence is a direct result of his destiny as a member of the Suzaku Seven, as his power increases his intellect far beyond those of his age or even older. At 13, he is the youngest boy to ever pass the first exam to become a government official in the land of Konan. These tests are reputed to be among some of the most difficult in the country, but Chiriko was able to pass with flying colors. While it isn't as apparent in the anime, the loss or dwindling of Chiriko's power causes him to regress to the normal intelligence of a child his age, something which he feels the need to have control over.

Chiriko first appears at the Palace of Suzaku, and manages to save Miaka and the Suzaku Seven from a devious plot involving Amiboshi, a member of the Seiryuu Seven who had infiltrated the group posing as one of them. Chiriko's timely arrival and countering of Amiboshi's deadly powers was crucial to the group's survival, and thereafter he joined them on their quest to summon Suzaku, as a member of the Suzaku Seven.

While not the most courageous or strong of fighters, Chiriko is nevertheless not to be underestimated. His force of will alone is among the highest in the Suzaku Seven, and his intelligence is also invaluable to the group as a whole.
