Chichiri is a member of the Suzaku Seven, celestial warriors sworn to protect the Priestess of Suzaku from harm. Chichiri is a powerful sorcerer who was taught under the tutelage of Taiitsukun, the old and wizened sorceress of Mt. Taikyoku. Though he is normally very cheerful and humorous to others, especially his friends in the Suzaku Seven, Chichiri hides a painful past and memories. His face is actually a flexible mask which, when removed, reveals his real face and an ugly scar running over his left eye. This is the result of a tragedy that happened in Chichiri's past.
When he was 18, Chichiri was betrothed to one of his childhood friends, Kouran. However, one day he caught his would-be bride kissing his best friend Hikou. Shortly thereafter, his fiancee left him and killed herself, and Chichiri thought that she had committed suicide because of Hikou. Possessed by a murderous rage, Chichiri challenged his best friend to a fight to the death. During the fight there was a great flood, and in the ensuing chaos, Hikou fell off a cliff. Chichiri attempted to save him and was able to grab a hold of his hand, but at that moment, a large stray rock was launched out of the water, directly into Chichiri's left eye, blinding it. The pain caused Chichiri to let go of Hikou's hand and he watched helplessly as his friend drowned. Shortly thereafter, Chichiri went to study under Taiitsukun, and though it would be easy for him to magically remove the scar on his face, he does not do this as a reminder of the past.
Chichiri first meets Miaka (who mistakes him for a kidnapper) when he saves her from an assassin sent to kill her. He disappears into his hat, but then subsequently reappears later in order to save her once again from the same assassin. It was at this time that Miaka found out that he was one of the celestial warriors and in so doing, made Chichiri her companion. Chichiri has since been a pillar of strength not only for Miaka but for the entire Suzaku Seven, and his arsenal of magical weapons ensures their protection.
