Gyokuran is Tamahome's younger sibling and the oldest sister among all the siblings. Gyokuran, along with her siblings and father, all love Tamahome and his care for them, as he struggles to earn money for them to get by. Gyokuran and Yuiren, Tamahome's other sister, become close with Miaka when she visits.
Miaka first encounters Gyokuran when her, Tamahome, and the rest of the Suzaku Seven pass through Tamahome's town in their travels. The Sou family immediately takes a liking to Miaka and even senses that they belong together, much to the embarrassment of both Miaka and Tamahome. While they do not appear in the series that often, the Sou family is a reminder of the ties that Tamahome holds to them and how important they are to him.
