Baxter State Park Baxter State Park was the lifelong
project of one man, former Maine Governor Percival Baxter. In his
own words, he created the Park “for those who love nature and are
willing to walk and make an effort to get close to nature”.
The Park contains the highest peak in Maine, Katahdin, along with 45
other mountain peaks and over 200 miles of hiking trails. The
guidelines set forth by Percival Baxter are designed to keep the Park
in its natural wild state as a wildlife sanctuary first and for
recreational purposes. Baxter State Park operates solely through user

Chewonki Foundation's Maine Coast Semester Maine Coast Semester is a unique
academic program run by the Chewonki Foundation in Wiscasset, Maine.
Each fall and spring, they offer a small number of high school
juniors the chance to live and work on a 400-acre saltwater peninsula
with the goal of exploring the interrelationship between people and the
natural world through challenging coursework in natural science,
environmental issues and ethics, art, history, and literature and
writing.
The community is small --only 40 students and 16 faculty members-- and
the application process very competitive. In addition to their
studies, students work for several hours each afternoon on an organic
farm, woodlot, or on maintenance and construction projects. The
students who attend Maine Coast Semester are highly motivated.
They enjoy hard work, both physical and intellectual, and they
have the strong desire to contribute in some way to their world.
MCS students generally return to their schools with increased
self-confidence, an appreciation for the rewards and struggles of
community living, a deeper sense of stewardship for the natural world,
and a developing sense of ownership for their education. The
intimate and residential nature of Maine Coast Semester means that they
all --faculty and students-- get to know each other very well in the
short time that they spend together.
Chewonki has worked with over 1200 graduates from 220 independent
and public schools throughout the United States. East Grand Outdoor Class & Adventure Race for Teens Be sure to stop by our booth and
