At the Jerico Games, an international winter sports competition, MacGyver has a surprise reunion with Ellen Stewart Jerico, his high school sweetheart. At first it seems that their romance is rekindled, but MacGyver discovers that she told him nothing on their first meeting. She has become the embittered wife of the abusive and philandering media mogul Ralph Jerico, head of Jerico Games. MacGyver is put in charge of young Nikolai, the star Soviet ice hockey player at the competition. A few hours later as MacGyver is videotaping a ceremony on TV that Nikolai is attending, he sees himself? angrily arriving at the scene. He rushes over to the sports center and is apprehended by police for the murder of Ralph Jerico but manages a quick escape from the squad car. Meanwhile, Nikolai actually saw Jerico's assistant running from the building and removing a MacGyver-like mask. He shoots at Nikolai, who is then on the run from him. Because he trusts Ellen, Nikolai telephones her, and she arranges to meet with him at her office. In the confusion of her love-hate relationship with MacGyver Ellen must conceal her part in the murder. MacGyver and Nikolai are locked in a fiery chamber from which they escape, and MacGyver stops the man who impersonated him. Ellen picks up his gun and is about to kill MacGyver in retaliation for the breakup years ago. He tries to reason with her in spite of her hysteria and finally takes the gun from her. In the aftermath he tells Nikolai that she may receive psychiatric help. Alone he opens the Eyrie High School yearbook and sees her picture and the note she wrote to him.
Ellen: I've never known anyone who could make such a mystery of... everything.
MacGyver: No, no. I'm not trying to be mysterious. It's just that what I do, well... it's tough to explain.
