Passing through a California grape-growing community MacGyver becomes involved in a local crisis. Tony Garcia is murdered, MacGyver is injured, and Tony's grief-stricken wife Carmen tells MacGyver about their situation. Their daughter Natalie has birth defects from her mother's exposure to illegal pesticides during pregnancy. MacGyver and Alex, Carmen's brother, get to the bottom of this longstanding issue. MacGyver goes into the vineyards as a worker and gets into trouble when questioning Hector about Tony's disappearance. Hector says he has known Tony since childhood and sees MacGyver as a professional organizer. Carmen tells MacGyver that it is rumored that Nick, Caspar Casabian's son and heir, is a suspect in Tony's murder. In addition, MacGyver has discovered that illegal growth enhancers have been used on the grapes. Casabian, disillusioned when he discovers that his son has organized this illegal practice, arrives with the police at the finish of a deadly confrontation between Nick's men and MacGyver and Alex.
Carmen: A fine dream, but now it is dead, like Tony.
MacGyver: Carmen, listen. There's no reason in the world why his work has to die too.
Carmen: Who's going to follow in his footsteps? Alex? You?
MacGyver: Nobody, but we can do our part.
