Quite exhausted, MacGyver dreams he is a Civil War veteran looking to buy land in Montana. He catches a ride with a Swiss immigrant and trades his gun for a handmade Swiss knife. When he arrives in Serenity, he goes to the Red Dog Saloon and makes new friends, Penny Parker and Jack "Tinhorn" Dalton, who sells him a claim to Big Springs Ranch. The three ride out to the ranch, deserted except for Lee Sing and Billy Colton, hired hands who stayed on. Pete Thornton and his men from Fire Eagles Ranch ride in, and Pete tells him he wants the land for its water. MacGyver won't leave, so Pete hires Murdoc to scare him off. Murdoc goes out there and takes down Billy. Pete is incensed that Murdoc resorted to killing and fires him, but Murdoc takes Penny as bait to lure MacGyver into town. Jack rides out to Big Springs Ranch, where Pete and MacGyver have become partners. They return to town, encountering the Bozer brothers at the outskirts. MacGyver rides in alone, and climbing to the roof of Wainwright's sees Murdoc below. He discovers it is actually Penny, bound and gagged. Murdoc shoots him in cold blood, and he falls through the railing to the street. Pete, Jack, and Penny revive him: the bullet hit the Swiss knife in his shirt pocket. He awakens... and that knife is laying on the floor by the couch.
Pete: I had no right to speak for you. I'm trying to tell you I'm sorry.
MacGyver: Come on, Pete. We've got no problems. We're friends, right?
Pete: That's what I wanted to hear.
