Pete buys a Rubens painting at an art auction, but the sale is interrupted by Sam Bolinski, who rushes in and excitedly claims the painting is his. MacGyver looks into the Polish concentration camp survivor's familial claim. Sam is assaulted at the police station, and MacGyver takes on his assailant, but Sergeant Gray shoots and kills the man. MacGyver is stunned at this reaction to a minor situation. He takes Sam to meet Laura Sand, Phoenix's art consultant. Sam, who worked as an art clerk for the Nazis, has the World War II E.R.R. records of the theft of the painting, which conflict with the owner's papers. MacGyver and Sam are at his home with the papers and pictures of the rest of the Jewish family, all of whom died in the holocaust, when masked men arrive and take them to an eerie remote area, the Bonaventure Silver Mine. Laura has also been kidnapped. They meet Madame Brandenberg, whom Sam recognizes as a Nazi officer's wife. Sergeant Gray, her grandson William Brand, a congressional candidate, and Lyle Hoggart, owner of the stolen painting, are all part of the conspiracy to rebuild the "Aryan Nation". MacGyver and the others are taken into the mine, where they will be gased. They get free and overcome their captors. Finally Sam holds Madame Brandenberg at gunpoint as the police arrive.
Laura: Those are historical documents!
Madame Brandenberg: Now they are historic ashes.
MacGyver: You know, burning those documents won't change the truth.
