BLACK RHINO
Episode 5-08 [091]
13 November 1989
In Kambezi MacGyver helps Billy Colton nail a poacher butchering endangered black rhinos for their valuable horns. He contacts Kate Hubley, who runs Nabo Ranch, a protected game sanctuary. Natives, impoverished and impressed by the money they earn, are stealing horns from rhinos in the sanctuary. MacGyver mentions Ladysmith, and she knows the name. Their conversation is interrupted by an assault on another rhino. Following a lead to a "sugar house", given by the apprehended native jabbering in a mountain dialect, they go to the Nabo Sugar Refinery. They rescue Billy, who is about to be hanged, and back at the ranch he tells them a deal will go down that afternoon at the Gold City Hotel, an exclusive resort downriver in South Africa. They arrive at the hotel, and Billy poses as a waiter to knock out the Chinese buyer. MacGyver meets Ladysmith, who is suspicious and refuses the deal. Kate intervenes, and they agree to meet with the supplier at the Victoria Dam. MacGyver and Billy arrive ahead of them, and MacGyver sees that the supplier is General Mabuto, who knows Kate. They take the "waterslide" down to the bridge and confront Ladysmith and Mabuto just as they realize who Kate is. Ladysmith pushes MacGyver over the bridge railing but falls with him. MacGyver has a firm hold, but Ladysmith, holding onto MacGyver's legs, loses his grip and falls to his death onto the boat containing the rhino horns. Later, Kate holds a night vigil where the horns are burned on a pyre in dedication to the future of the black rhino.
MacGyver: That's the sickest, cruelest, most inhumane thing I've seen in my life.
