JACK IN THE BOX
Episode 3-07 [051]
9 November 1987
MacGyver gets a phone call from Jack and goes to Smiley, Arkansas, to find his friend, who sounded in trouble. He gets a taste of redneck justice when he is tossed into a prison labor camp. Sure enough, Jack is there and with his friend Pepe is in search of $5 million, reputed to be hidden somewhere in the mine where the prisoners work each day. MacGyver reluctantly agrees to help and rigs a diversion that appears to be gas down in the mine shaft. All the prisoners rush to the surface. He and Jack attempt a getaway, but Pepe is shot, so they return. Jack is sentenced to ten lashes for the escape attempt. However, the next morning they actually do escape from the camp. Jack figures they should go see Louella, his waitress friend, but when they arrive they are apprehended by the local banker, who is also in on the scheme. They are taken back to the mine and Bodine, the sheriff, demands they find the money. They all go down into the mine, where MacGyver attaches a pulley to Bodine's belt, and he tumbles into the water. Then he throws a bomb in after him, and the money is blown up along with that section of the mine. Jack is quite disappointed, but MacGyver is only thankful that they escaped with their lives.
MacGyver: My grandpa used to say that friendship is a two-sided coin: it can be the best or worst thing that ever happened to you.
