Pete's ex-wife Connie and his estranged son Michael are kidnapped and held in Louisiana. Pete is told to come there alone, or his family will be killed. MacGyver proceeds to the meeting site ahead of Pete. Pete is picked up by the kidnappers, who switch cars and eventually elude MacGyver. He asks directions from Obadiah Moss, a local fisherman, who provides him with a boat. It was a trick, and the boat explodes downriver with MacGyver apparently on board. Meanwhile, Pete meets the kidnapper, former co-worker Frank Bonner. Bonner, who worked in the D.X.S., blames Pete for the death of his family when they went along with him on a mission in Yemen. Pete responds that they were unaware of the threat because Bonner kept the $800,000 he was given to buy information. MacGyver, having escaped the boat explosion, arrives and attempts to free the Thorntons. Michael is freed, but Connie and Pete remain with Bonner. While working on a rescue MacGyver tells Michael how demanding Pete's job is, limiting the amount of time he has spent with his son. The two implement their plan and free Connie and Pete. Michael gets his hands on a gun and has to be dissuaded from killing Bonner. Later, MacGyver cooks a Cajun meal for the family and sees a reconciliation between Pete and Michael.
Pete: I can't ask you to help me on this one.
MacGyver: Don't ask.
