Employment
Storage Systems Research Center, University of California Santa Cruz
December 2004 - Present, Assistant Research Computer Scientist
Network Appliance, Inc
June 1999 - November 2004, Member of Technical Staff
As a member of a small, highly effective group dedicated to closely tracking and improving performance of all Network Appliance products during their entire life cycle I consulted with executives, designers, developers, marketing, and customer service on performance issues based on analysis, modelling, benchmark/metric development, and test automation, as well as feedback from sales engineers and customer service. My specialty areas are (1) caching World-Wide Web proxy servers (HTTP, NNTP, Real and Microsoft streaming media, and filtering) where I influenced the web cache layout technology based on my publication at Usenix 1999, (2) nearline storage systems, (3) fabric-attached storage systems (FCP), and (4) synchronous and asynchronous disaster recovery (long-distance mirroring).
Digital Equipment Corporation / Compaq
September 1996 - May 1999, Guest Researcher
Performance analysis of World-Wide Web proxy servers at the Network Systems Laboratory. Exploration of bandwidth management techniques based on automated traffic analysis using machine learning, and exploration of ways to map HTTP cache access streams to file system access streams that better match optimizations built into the underlying file system
Digital Equipment Corporation
June, July & August 1996, Research and Development
Performance analysis of World-Wide Web proxy servers at the Network Systems Laboratory. Construction of a large volume/coarse grain event tracing infrastructure, instrumentation of the CERN and Squid web proxy. This work resulted in a three-year part-time employment as guest researcher to fund my Ph.D.
University of Colorado at Boulder
August 1992 - May 1996, Research Assistant
Design and implementation of an indexer and search engine for World-Wide Web caches for investigating intelligent caching strategies and resource discovery.
Design and implementation of a World-Wide Web workflow system (Chautauqua) which supports dynamic change of process models and exception handling. Design and implementation an automatic Unix tool and expert discovery service (ToolBox).
State Department for Geography Munich (Geographische Landesamt München), Germany
March - May 1992, Consultant
Network performance measurement and tuning of NFS file service.
Frauenhofer Gesellschaft (FhG), Germany
July 1991 - March 1992, Instructor
Unix, C, and C++ courses
University of Passau May 1987 - November 1991, Research Assistant
Developed various groupware applications for a multi-user deductive object manager (ConceptBase).
Implemented various tools for the Transputer Development Environment.
