Long time ago ...

I was born in Hamburg, Germany. After high school in Hamburg and Kaltenkirchen I toured the United States, Jamaica, and a tiny bit of Canada for an entire year by bicycle (altogether about 10,000 miles). This I enjoyed so much that I vowed to myself that I would some day live at one of the many beautiful places I visited. After my return to Germany I spent a few years at the University of Passau where I graduated with a "Diplom Informatiker" (roughly a masters in computer science). After my very last oral exam I heard that Skip Ellis was starting a new research group at the University of Colorado at Boulder. I applied and got a research assistantship. I arrived at Boulder in mid 1992. There I also met my wife Zulah Eckert. After we both graduated we moved to Cupertino, CA in 1999.
