ART & SEX IN GREENWICH VILLAGE: Literary Life After Stonewall
Carrol & Graf --trade paperback with photographs -- $14.95

An insider's account of the rise of contemporary gay literature—and culture—a revealing portrait of New York in the 1970s and 80s

Almost a decade after the Stonewall rebellion lit the political fuse of Gay Liberation in 1969, its impact on the arts remained minimal. While a handful of gay plays, films and a small number of gay themed books were available, few of these reflected the new, out-of-the-closet realities of the post-Stonewall scene. That landscape began to change in 1977, when Felice Picano launched a small press devoted to gay books, SeaHorse, and author Larry Mitchell set up his own gay press, Calamus Books. Dramaturge Terry Helbing followed with a line of plays at his JH Press. By 1981 the three men joined forces to create Gay Presses of New York (GPNy), the most visible and influential publisher of gay books of its time. Together they brought out work by then unknown but soon to be established authors such as Harvey Fierstein, Dennis Cooper, Brad Gooch, Joan Larkin, Martin Duberman, Robert Gluck, Jane Chambers, Karla Jay, Gavin Dillard, as well as many more up and coming poets, novelists, and playwrights.

GPNy set the tone for Gay and Lesbian publishing for decades to come and played an integral role in the development and growth of gay popular culture, consisting today of bookstores, magazines, newspapers, theater companies, and art galleries. GPNy was also in the forefront of the gay visual arts, often using first time photographers such as Arthur Tress and Robert Mapplethorpe, and artists like George Stravinos, Ron Fowler and David Martin. Picano writes about his sometimes endearing, sometimes erotic, and sometimes bizarre encounters with them, with already established authors like Charles Henri Ford, Gore Vidal and James Purdy, and with members of his own group, the pathbreaking Violet Quill Club Through luck, and sheer propinquity, for a decade or more, Felice Picano found himself at the center of whatever gay culture there was in the world and Art and Sex in Greenwich Village is Picano’s first-hand account of that historic confluence.

Tales: From a Distant Planet

With stylistic mastery and typical daring, Felice Picano delivers six groundbreaking stories and a
new novella that go beyond anything before imagined. In "The Perfect Setting," landscape
paintings give clues to different crimes they depict, possibly including the murder of the artist
herself. In "One Way Out," a backpack traveler strives to escape a strange and frightening
nightmare existence, only to discover it is monitored by psychiatrists. People of different epochs
experience fragile encounters and love affairs in the novella "Ingoldsby," a very different kind
of time-travel story. Future interplanetary explorers find themselves caught up in a seductively
dangerous planet in "Food for Thought." And our future cosmic civilization traces back to its
roots within the ruins of an unknown, extinct species in "The Secret of the Abandoned
Monument." All seven stories are gripping experiences that will take readers out of this world.
Destined to become a classic, Tales: From a Distant Planet clearly illustrates why Felice
Picano has become not only one of the world's most influential and respected writers but a
popular cultural icon.

Felice Picano's Science Fiction Novel, "DRYLAND'S END"!
-Thousands of years in the future, life itself is in jeopardy! A rebellion of intelligent Cybernetic servants has left the females of the galaxy virtually sterile, crippling the controlling political body --the Matriarchy. The race is on to find a solution, but will it be enough to save the Matriarchy as other galactic authorities attempt to dominate it using sabotage and all-out war? Dryland's End, Felice Picano's science fiction adventure for the new millennium, touches on many of today's most controversial subjects: interracial relationships, gender conflicts, cloning, and same-sex pairings -- and views them with a lens toward the future.

WHO IS FELICE PICANO?

Felice Picano's first book was a finalist for the PEN/Hemingway Award. Since then he has published twenty volumes of fiction, poetry, memoirs, etc. Considered a founder of modern gay literature along with the six other members of the Violet Quill Club, Picano also founded two publishing companies: the SeaHorse Press and Gay Presses of New York. He's been a regular writer for the SAN FRANSISCO EXAMINER, THE LESBIAN GAY REVIEW, and LAMBDA BOOK REPORT. Among his many award-winning books, are the novels, LIKE PEOPLE IN HISTORY and THE BOOK OF LIES. His most recent novel, ONYX, was published to acclaim in 2001. His exhibit "Early Gay Presses of New York," debuted at the ONE Institute in L.A. appeared in San Francisco's Central Library from November 15, 2002 until years end. In 1986, his one-act play, "One O'Clock Jump", was co-winner of the Jane Chambers Play Award, and has been produced in New York, at Seattle Rep and at the 2000 Tennessee Williams Festival in New Orleans. In the fall of 2002, San Francisco's New Conservatory Theatre premiered Picano's new comedy-thriller, "The Bombay Trunk" to acclaim. Picano books out in 2003 were THE NEW JOY OF GAY SEX, Third Edition, 2003, with Charles Silverstein (HarperCollins) and Haworth Press reprints, in a uniform edition of Picano's memoir-trilogy, AMBIDEXTROUS, MEN WHO LOVED ME, and A HOUSE ON THE OCEAN, A HOUSE ON THE BAY.

... AND WHY SHOULD I BE INTERESTED IN FELICE?

Richard Canning, in Gay Fiction Speaks (Columbia University Press, 2001) writes "Felice Picano's contribution to contemporary gay literature in his own work has been immense. His founding of one of the first gay publishing firms, SeaHorse Press, has fostered a profound growth in the gay literary genre. Over the course of the last several decades, Picano, with members of the pioneering gay literary group, the Violet Quill, is responsible for the most heralded gay literature of the 1980s and 1990s." From the entry in CONTEMPORARY AUTHOR'S (Gale Press, 1995) by Malcolm Boyd, "Felice Picano is a premier voice in gay letters." Of Picano's volumes of memoirs: "Picano is definitely gifted enough to ensure these books popularity with readers everywhere," wrote Charles Harmon in BOOKLIST; and in LIBRARY JOURNAL, of the last volume, Richard Violette called Picano "a leading light in the gay literary world," adding that "his glints of flashing wit and subtle hints of dark decadence transcend cliches." Michael A. Lutes in THE GAY AND LESBIAN LITERARY COMPANION (Visible Ink Press, 1996) writes "Felice Picano is a leader in the modern gay literary movement. Among his works are many novels --both gay and straight -- poetry, plays, short stories, memoirs and other non-fiction, and service as a contributor and editor of numerous magazines and books. His active involvement in the development of gay presses and a gay literary movement is widely acknowledged." Robert L. Pela in THE ADVOCATE maintained that, considering all of his works - fiction, nonfiction, and poetry - "Picano's destiny has been to lead the way for a generation of gay writers." "Picano's 1995 novel, LIKE PEOPLE IN HISTORY, reminded me of THE GREAT GATSBY," wrote William Sterling Walker. "Both books not only chronicle but hold a mirror to their respective periods -- are so timely as to be timeless, and in so doing advance the art of fiction." From a Rainbownet.com review of the 2002 reissue of Picano's classic gay thriller, THE LURE, "It is impossible to overate the influence Felice Picano has exerted over 20th Century Gay fiction. His works have shaped the Post-Stonewall landscape."

New Orleans, Louisiana.
Panel: Don't Quit your Day Job
Its the dream of most writers to make a living solely on the words they produce. But is this a realistic goal? Does selling a bookeven a gay bestsellermean that you can finally spend all your time writing? Can you really pay the bills by writing for the gay press? A panel consisting of Felice Picano, Ian Philips, Jess Wells, Kristie Helms and moderator Carol Rosenfeld examines the realities of making a living as a writer for a queer readership. Topics will include the economics of gay publishing, how much work you really have to do to earn a living, and suggestions for how to balance your need to earn rent money with your goal of living off your writing.

Master Class: Literary Character Building: How To Make Your Written Individuals Live, Breathe, and Make More Trouble Than a Barrel of Monkeys.
When we think about our favorite works of literature, we think of characters first, from Don Quixote to Sherlock Holmes, Jay Gatsby and Frodo Baggins. But what is it that makes one fictional character vivid and believable and another inert and humdrum? How do you create characters that readers love and hate and care for so much they cannot stop turning the pages to know more about? How can you use people you have known or know to build cohesive fictional characters that take on a solid life of their own? Picano will discuss some of the methods and yes, tricks of the trade, in how to build characters that come to life and jump off the page in your short fiction, drama, screenplays, and novels.
