Esther E. Westphal
Esther E. Westphal, 78, of Canby, passed
away Friday, March 10, 2006, in Sioux Valley Hospital, Sioux Falls,
S.D.
Mass of Christian burial will be Monday, March 13, 2006 at 10:30
a.m. at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Canby with Rev. Tony Hesse
officiating.
Visitation will be Sunday, March 12 from 5 to
7:30 p.m. at Birk Funeral Home in Canby with a prayer service
at 7:30 p.m. and a Rosary to follow the prayer service. Visitation
will resume one hour prior to the service at the church on Monday.
Burial will be in the St. Peter's Catholic Cemetery in Canby.
Esther was born on Feb. 5, 1928, to Peter and
Francis Behnke in Ivanhoe. She married Harold C. Westphal on Dec.
27, 1948 in the Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Ivanhoe.
Following their marriage, the couple moved to Canby.
She was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church
in Canby and was very devoted to the church. She lived her life
as a mother and homemaker. She enjoyed dancing, collecting knickknacks
and gardening.
Esther is survived by her two sons, Paul (Barbara)
Westphal of Orange, Texas; Harley Westphal of Canby; a sister,
Maryann Pierson of Bentonville, Ark.; five grandchildren, Brian
Hauger; Jenna Hauger; Charles C. Westphal; Angela Dilliner; Shelly
Jones; five great-grandchildren, Alex; Christopher; Chad; Paul;
and Haley.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold
Westphal; a daughter, Eva Hauger; a grandson, Derek; her parents;
two brothers, Lawrence and Norbert Behnke; and a sister, Lorraine
Branum.
Lowell E. Westfield
Lowell E. Westfield, age 85, of Litchfield
died Friday, June 24, 2005, at the Emmanuel Home in Litchfield.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM, Thursday, June 30,
at the Litchfield Christian Church with pastor Mike Zylstra officiating.
Visitation will be held from 5 until 8 p.m.,
on Wednesday, with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. at the Johnson-Hagglund
Funeral Home and will continue one hour prior to the services
at the church.
Interment will be at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, in
the Antelope Hills Church of Christ Cemetery in Canby. Military
Honors will be provided by Admiral Benson V.F.W. Post #2818 of
Litchfield.
Lowell Elden Westfield was born on July 18,
1919, the son of Alfred and Sylvia (Buchanan) Westfield in Canby.
He grew up near Canby and graduated from Madison High School.
He attended Standard Welding Institute in Sioux City, Iowa, and
lived for a short time in Moline Ill. On March 7, 1943, he was
united in marriage to Ruth LaVergne Hill. He served during WWII
in the Army Air Force, with the 675th Bombardment Squadron. In
1945, after his military service, he moved to Council Bluffs,
Iowa, and worked as a welder.
He then moved to Canby where he farmed before
moving to Granite Falls and then Eveleth. While in Granite Falls,
he continued his education at Willmar Technical School and received
a teaching certificate. He taught welding at Eveleth Vo. Tech.
before moving to Wahpeton. He taught welding at North Dakota State
School of Science in Wahpeton from 1966 until 1984 when he moved
to Litchfield. On May 31, 1968 he was united
in marriage to Charlotte Keiser Siverson. He was a member of the
Male Chorus in many of the town he lived in. He was also a member
of the Litchfield Christian Church and the V.F.W.
He is survived by his wife Charlotte of Litchfield,
daughters; Sharon (and David) Huggett of Somerset, WI, Caryl (and
Michael) Stanley of Umzumbe, Natal, So. Africa, Juanita (and Joe)
Gillespie of Lakeville, stepchildren; Dwight Siverson of Craig,
Colo., LoAnn (and Jim) Hansen of Currie, Kathy (and Lynn) Enquist
of Princeton, NJ and Neil (and Sue) Siverson of Lake Elmo. He
is also survived by seven grandchildren, 12 step-grandchildren,
three great grandchildren, 10 step-great grandchildren, brothers;
Wendell (and Ruth) Westfield of Moorhead, Merlin (and Sandy) Westfield
of Pipestone, sisters; Beverly (and Dennis) Frederickson of Canby,
Marcella Oellien of Canby, many nieces, nephews and other relatives
and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his
first wife Ruth LaVergne, daughter; Nancy Miller, daughter-in-law;
Lori Siverson, brothers; Russell and Gerald and sisters; Buelah
Friis and Marilyn Frederickson.
Marie
M. Wiese
Funeral service for Mrs. Marie Wiese, age 87
of Gary, S.D., will be at 2 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 16, in the First
Evangelical Lutheran Church, Gary, with Rev. Bruce Mueller officiating.
Marie passed away on Friday, Jan. 13, 2006,
in the Deuel County Good Samaritan Home, Clear Lake, S.D.
Burial will be in the Grandview Cemetery, Gary,.
Pallbearers will be: Steve Hunt, Michael
Hunt, Dean Hunt, Gary Greckel, Todd McCabe, Mark Brown, Chad Hunt,
Rolland Wiese and Mike Goldschmidt. Music will be provided
by Maita Mueller, organist.
Visitation will be Sunday from 2 - 4 p.m. at
the First Evangelical Lutheran Church, Gary, and will resume Monday
one hour prior to the service at the church. Houseman-Eng Funeral
Home in Clear Lake, is in charge of the arrangements.
Marie was born on Sept. 9, 1918, to Fred and
Alice (Paulson) Musch on the family farm south of Moritz, South
Dakota. She was raised there and attended the Moritz School
District #33. Marie was baptized in the Lutheran faith and
was confirmed on July 3, 1932, at the First Evangelical Lutheran
Church in Gary, South Dakota. Following her education, Marie
helped on the farm and worked for many households in the area.
On May 8, 1940, she was united in marriage to
Luman Winrow at his sister's home in Canby, Minnesota. Following
their marriage, they lived with Luman's Mother until they moved
to a farm near Gary. They raised cattle, had dairy cows and
chickens. Marie also helped in the fields during the busy
times. Luman passed away on Dec. 22, 1962. In October
of 1963, Marie left the farm and moved to Sioux Falls, where she
worked five years in the Central Supply Department at the Sioux
Valley Hospital. In 1968, she moved to her parent's home
on Lake Cochrane.
On Dec. 1, 1968, she was united in marriage
to Ray Wiese. They lived on his farm north of Gary, and
then later moving into Gary. On Dec. 6, 2005 she entered
the Deuel County Good Samaritan Home in Clear Lake.
Marie was a lifelong member of the First Evangelical
Lutheran Church in Gary. She enjoyed reading and word puzzles.
She is survived by her husband, Raymond Wiese, Gary; one sister,
Mable (Marvin) Hunt, Gary, and three nephews, Darold (Mary) Hunt,
Darwin (Delores) Hunt all of Gary, and David (Brenda) Hunt, Sergeant
Bluff, Iowa.
Marie was preceded in death by her first husband,
Luman Winrow and her parents, Fred and Alice Musch.
Florence Winter
Memorial services for Florence Winter, age
81, of Watertown, South Dakota, will be at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday,
May 23, at the First Congregational United Church of Christ, Watertown,
S.D.
Rev. Richard Fylling will officiate.
Florence passed away on May 17, 2006, at the
Avera Heart Hospital of South Dakota in Sioux Falls. She was the
widow of Delbert Winter.
Burial will be at 12:30 p.m. in the Lakeview
Cemetery, Clear Lake, S.D. Honorary pallbearers will be Don Homan,
Arlie Asmussen, Dennis Stoltenburg, James Dailey, Mike Dailey,
and Henry Rauen. Music will be provided by Sara Winter, pianist,
and Brodie Dailey, soloist.
There will be no visitation. Arrangements are
being handled by Crawford Funeral Chapel, Watertown.
Florence was born on April 30, 1925, at Altamont, S.D., to Charles
and Hattie (Bublitz) Geisler. She was baptized on May 12, 1929
and was confirmed on May 20, 1940 at St. John's Lutheran Church,
Altamont.
On June 24, 1942, Florence was united in marriage
to Delbert Winter at Marshall. She joined the First Congregational
Church of Clear Lake on April 6, 1950, and then joined the Congregational
Church of Watertown on Dec. 8, 2002. Florence and Delbert owned
and operated the Fire Place Café and the Clear Lake Sale
Barn lunch counter from 1950 to 1960. In 1961, they purchased
Del's Café in Altamont and retired in 1979 after 29 years
in the restaurant business. Florence served on the Altamont Town
Board for four years.
Florence is survived by two sons: Dallas and
his wife, Shirley Winter, of Cheyenne, Wyo., and Steve Winter
of Altamont, S.D.; one daughter, Charlene Christie, of Canby;
one sister, Mable and her husband, Harold Milton, of Brandt, S.D.;
six grandchildren: Kim Rogers and Daniel Winter of Cheyenne, Wyo.;
Laurie Johnson of Savage; Jason Winter of Clear Lake; Mike Winter
of Brandt; and Jill Meyer of Mitchell, S.D.; and 10 great grandchildren:
Michael Winter and Jonathan Rogers of Cheyenne; Haley Winter of
Clear Lake; Kayleigh Winter and Brock Winter of Brandt; Jenna
Johnson and Amber Johnson of Savage; and Brooke-Lynn Meyers, Brandy
Meyers and Brittany Meyers, all of Mitchell.
She was preceded in death by her husband, in
2002; her parents; six sisters and six brothers.
Debra Winter
Debra Jean (Nelson) Winter, age 51, of Canby,
MN passed away September 15, 2005 at the Sioux Valley Hospital
Canby Campus, in Canby, MN.
Funeral Services will be Monday, September 19,
2005 at 10:30 a.m. at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Canby,
MN with Rev. Katherine Rood officiating.
Visitation will be Sunday, September 18 from
6:00 to 8:00 p.m. with a Prayer Service at 7:30 p.m. at Birk Funeral
Home in Canby, MN. Visitation will continue for one hour prior
to services at the church on Monday. Burial will be at the Memory
Gardens in Montevideo, MN.
Debra Jean (Nelson) Winter was born on December
18, 1953 in Canby, MN to William and Alma (Laabs) Nelson. She
was baptized in the Lutheran Faith and confirmed at Our Saviour's
Lutheran Church in Canby. She was raised in Canby and graduated
from Canby High School in 1972.
On May 25, 1974, Deb was united in marriage
to Rick Winter at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Canby. After
their marriage, they lived near Canby where she raised her family.
She passed away on Thursday, September 15, 2005 at the Sioux Valley
Hospital Canby Campus in Canby at the age of 51 years, 8 months
and 28 days.
Deb was a member of Our Saviour's Lutheran Church
in Canby. She enjoyed camping, Vikings football and enjoyed watching
her son and nephews racing. She loved to cook, bake and loved
their dogs. She enjoyed reading, spending time with her family
and in her earlier years she enjoyed riding snowmobile.
Deb is survived by her husband, Rick Winter
of Canby, MN; two sons, Travis Winter of Sleepy Eye, MN; Derek
Winter of Canby, MN; her mother, Alma Nelson of Canby, MN; sister
Elonne (Russ) Winter of Slayton, MN; three brothers, Ron Nelson
of Canby, MN; Roger (Lyla) Nelson of Canby, MN; Larry (Joanne)
Nelson of Canby, MN; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. She
was preceded in death by one daughter, Kelly, her father, William
and one nephew, David Nelson, sister-in-law, Sharon Nelson and
her mother-in-law and father-in-law.
Lester S. Yackley
Funeral services for Lester S. Yackley, 88,
of Canby, will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 4, at Our
Saviour's Lutheran Church in Canby, with Rev. Katherine Rood officiating.
Burial will be in the Canby City Cemetery.
Jane Stoks will be the organist, with the congregation
singing "The Old Rugged Cross" and "What A Friend
We Have In Jesus". There will be special music by Bruce Melby,
singing "How Great Thou Art" and "Just A Closer
Walk With Thee". The pallbearers will be David Lee Denelsbeck,
S. Scott Yackley, Adam Yackley, Mark Yackley, Allyson Yackley,
and Mathew Hoffman. Honorary pallbearers will be all of Lester?s
grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.
on Friday at the Birk Funeral Home in Canby, with a prayer service
at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue at the church on Saturday,
one hour prior to services.
Lester died on Wednesday, June 1, 2005, at his
residence at Sylvan Place in Canby.
Lester S. Yackley was born on July 23, 1916,
in Hardwick, one of seven children born to Arthur and Edna (McKenzie)
Yackley. He grew up in the Canby area.
On Nov. 21, 1940, Lester was united in marriage
to Wilma Mae Sillman at Zachaeus Lutheran Church. They lived and
raised their family in the Canby area, where Lester farmed for
his entire life. He was a dairy farmer as well as an excellent
swine producer. Lester served as Hammer Township supervisor, treasurer
for School District #39, on the Canby Credit Union Board, the
Yellow Medicine County Planning Commission, and as a 4-H leader.
In 1983 Lester and Wilma retired from farming and moved to Canby.
Lester was a member of Our Saviour's Lutheran
Church, where he served on the church council. Some of his enjoyments
in life included playing cards, dancing, collecting toy tractors,
watching auto racing,especially NASCAR, working with cars and
pickups, and especially spending time with his family and his
many grandchildren. He and Wilma enjoyed going for lunch at the
Midway Cafe, and to the bakery to visit with their many friends.
Lester is survived by his wife, Wilma; his children:
Jeanette (and David) Denelsbeck of Canby, Steven (and Judy) Yackley
of Canby, Darryl (and Kaye) Yackley of Watertown, S.D., Lyndon
(and Debbie) Yackley of Oakdale, Gene Yackley of Canby, and Lorie
(and Chuck) Hoffman of Porter; 18 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren;
and six great-great-grandchildren. He is also survived by three
sisters: Margaret Zanke, Marjorie Merritt, and Edna Telford; and
by many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two
brothers: Arthur Jr. and Frank; a sister, Alice Grengs; a grandson,
Andrew Hoffman; and a daughter-in-law, Sandy Yackley.
Sandra Ireland-Yackley
Funeral services for Sandra Ireland-Yackley,
51, of Canby, MN, will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, March 18,
at Zion Lutheran Church in Scotland, S.D., with Rev. Dennis Thum
and Rev. William Greaver officiating. Burial will be in the Rose
Hill Cemetery at Scotland.
Jan Kocer will be the organist, with the congregation
singing "Amazing Grace". There will be special music
by Kathy Merrigan Manning, singing "God Is There" and
"The Lord's Prayer". The casketbearers will be Mike
Bietz, Tom Ireland, Dwight Bietz, Donny Bietz, Rian Merrigan,
and Robert Reimann.
Visitation will be held from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m.
on Thursday at the Birk Funeral Home in Canby, with a prayer service
at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue at the church in Scotland on
Friday, one hour prior to services.
Sandra died on Tuesday, March 15, at her home
in Canby, following a long struggle with cancer. Sandy was a strong
woman whose unwavering positive attitude throughout life's challenges
will always be remembered.
Sandra was born on October 23, 1953 in Parkston,
S.D., to parents Eugene and Ella Bartel Bietz. She graduated from
high school in Scotland, and went on to earn her Bachelor of Science
degree from the University of South Dakota in Vermillion.
In 1975 she moved to Sioux Falls, where she
worked at several jobs. She was married to Larry Ireland in 1979,
and they moved to Brookings in 1981. While in Brookings, Sandy
worked for the Friends of South Dakota Public Broadcasting, and
for Daktronics. She and Larry were divorced in 2000.
In 2002, Sandy was married to Gene Yackley,
and they made their home in Canby. Some of her enjoyments in life
included her two cats, spending time with family and friends,
and being a great mother.
She is survived by her husband, Gene Yackley
of Canby; her daughter, Jill Ireland of Vermillion, S.D.; her
sons: Jacob and Joshua Ireland of Brookings, S.D.; her parents:
Eugene and Ella Bietz of Scotland, S.D.; her step-daughters: Allyson
Yackley of Canby, and Jacki Ireland of Phoenix, Ariz.; her
step-sons: Daniel Yackley of Canby, and Jay Ireland of Prescott,
Ariz.,; her brother, Dennis (and Dorothy) Bietz of Olivet,
S.D.; her sister, Donna (and Ron) Nelson of Wausa, NE; several
nieces and nephews; and many good friends.
She was preceded in death by her maternal and
paternal grandparents.
Dorothy Wahlstrom
Funeral services for Dorothy Wahlstrom, 88,
of Hendricks, will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 13,
at Grace United Methodist Church in Hendricks, with Pastor Robert
Neff officiating. Burial will be in the Hendricks City Cemetery.
Bonnie Neff will be the organist, with the
congregation singing "How Great Thou Art", "What
A Friend We Have In Jesus", and "The Old Rugged Cross".
The pallbearers will be Dan Anderson, Larry Grussing, Gary
Zylstra, Paul Wahlstrom, Steve Hammer, and Don Fehr.
Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00
p.m. on Wednesday at the Hendricks Hospital Chapel, and will continue
at the church on Thursday, one hour prior to services.
Mrs. Wahlstrom died on Sunday, Jan. 9, at the
Hendricks Nursing Home. The Birk Funeral Home in Hendricks
is in charge of the arrangements.
She was born on November 6, 1916 in Morrison,
Illinois, to parents Henry E. and Myrtle (Mason) Heath. Her
family later moved to Hendricks, Minnesota, where Dorothy graduated
from Hendricks High School and worked as a restaurant waitress
for a short time.
On May 16, 1942, Dorothy was married to Gustav
"Swede" Wahlstrom in Lake Benton, Minnesota. They
resided in Hendricks, where they raised their two children, Keith
and Linda. Swede passed away in 1995, and Dorothy continued
to live at home until moving to the Lincoln Lane Villa. She
later became a resident of the Hendricks Nursing Home.
Dorothy was a member of Grace United Methodist
Church in Hendricks, the United Methodist Women, and the Women's
Circle Bible Study. Some of her enjoyments in life included
family vacations and fishing trips to Rainy Lake and Rainy River
in northern Minnesota, sewing for herself and her family, and
coffee parties with her neighbors. Dorothy and Swede also
enjoyed traveling on many bus trips in their retirement years.
She is survived by her children: Keith
(and Carolyn) Wahlstrom of Bloomington, MN, and Linda (and
Gordon) Jones of New Ulm, MN; her grandchildren: Daniel
(and Amy) Wahlstrom of Farmington, MN, Darren Wahlstrom
of Minneapolis, MN, Alan Wahlstrom of Minneapolis, MN, Melinda
Jones of New Ulm, MN, and Greg Jones (and Kristin Olds)
of St. Cloud, MN; and her brother, Howard (and Norma) Heath
of Benson, MN.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her
husband, Gustav; and a brother, Leonard Heath.
Leon P. Zimmerman
Funeral services for Leon P. Zimmerman, 87,
of Canby, will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, April 12, at Our
Saviour's Lutheran Church in Canby, with Rev. Katherine Rood and
Rev. Al Sandness officiating.
Burial will be in the Canby City Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.
on Monday at the Birk Funeral Home in Canby, with a prayer service
at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue at the church on Tuesday, one
hour prior to services.
Karen Olsen will be the organist, with the congregation
singing "Rock Of Ages" and "Children Of The Heavenly
Father". There will be special music by Bruce Melby,
singing "On Eagles' Wings" and "The Lord's Prayer".
The pallbearers will be Rodney Nelson, Brett Nelson, Bradley Nelson,
Mike Peterson, Rick Nelson, and B.J. Vette.
Leon passed away on Saturday, April 9, 2005,
at Senior Haven in Canby.
Leon Paul Zimmerman was born on Dec. 24, 1917,
in Hammer Township to Gabriel and Emma (Krueger) Zimmerman. He
was baptized at Zacchaeus Lutheran Church in Canby on March 17,
1918, by Rev. G. Bents, and was confirmed on May 24, 1931, by
Rev. William Hennig.
He graduated from Canby High School with the
Class of 1937, and farmed with his parents on the home farm in
Hammer Township until his marriage. On Sept. 20, 1940, Leon
was married to Audrey Steen in Olivia, Minnesota. They lived on
the Zimmerman farm for 51 years, farming until their retirement
in 1980.
In 1996 Leon and Audrey moved to Canby, where
they designed and moved into their new home. Leon spent most of
his life doing what he loved most - farming. He was a member of
Zacchaeus Lutheran Church until their merger with Our Saviour's
Lutheran. He was also a member of the Hammer Township Board
for many years. Some of his enjoyments in life included playing
cards, traveling, and dancing in his younger years. He also loved
entertaining family and friends, and enjoying life with his wife,
Audrey, for almost 65 years.
Leon is survived by his wife, Audrey; his sisters-in-law:
Esther Zimmerman of Canby, and Marguerite Zimmerman of Clarkfield;
and by many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents; five
brothers: Tom, Ed, Harold, Godfrey, and Bernard; and three
sisters: Dorothy, Madeline, and Gertrude.
