Bernice Iffert

   Mass of Christian Burial for Bernice L. Iffert, 84, of Canby, were celebrated Thursday, April 21, at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Canby, with Father Tony Hesse officiating.  
   Burial was in St. Peter's Church Cemetery.
   Phyllis Vlaminck was the organist, and Jean Kockelman was the song leader. The Reader was Ralph Ochocki and the Giftbearers were Evelyn Lacek and Marian Verhelst. The casketbearers were Wayne Monke, Duane Monke, John Hall Sr., Don Erp, Norman Mortenson, and Don Berndt.
   Mrs. Iffert died on Sunday, April 17, 2005, at Sioux Valley Canby Hospital.
   Bernice Lucille Toben was born on Sept. 12, 1920, on the Toben family farm near Canby, to parents Henry and Ella (Roll) Toben. She attended rural school at Meadowbrook #41 in Hammer Township.
   Bernice was a lifelong resident of the Canby Community. She and Cecil Iffert were married on Oct. 2, 1952, at Granite Falls, Minnesota.  Cecil passed away on July 27, 1972. Bernice was a homemaker and helped on the Toben family farm. Some of her enjoyments in life included cooking, baking, sewing, and caring for her vegetable and flower gardens. She was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church and the C.C.W.
   Bernice is survived by her daughter, Mildred (and husband Ralph) Hall of Marshall; two grandchildren: Rebecca Hall and Ben Hall, also of Marshall; and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
   She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; four brothers;  and one sister.

Frank Janiszeski

   Frank Janiszeski, 87, of Ivanhoe, MN passed away Thursday, December 1, 2005 at Sioux Valley Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, December 3 at 11:00 a.m. at St. John Cantius Catholic Church in Wilno, MN with Father David Breu officiating. Visitation will take place from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. at the church on Saturday. Burial will be at the St. John Cantius Cemetery in Wilno, MN. Birk Funeral Home in Ivanhoe is in charge of arrangements.
   Frank Janiszeski was born February 24, 1918 in Ivanhoe, Minnesota to Stephen and Barbara (Koploczyski) Janiszeski. Growing up on the farm, he attended St. John Cantius School. He was a member of St. John Cantius Catholic Church his entire life.
   He was a lifetime farmer. He enjoyed farming, bowling, making stained glass items, and woodworking.
   Frank is survived by several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his brothers and sisters: Rozalia, Veronica, Angeline, Lucille, Mary, Elizabeth, Agnes, Nettie, Thomas, and John.

Mildred V. Jants

   Funeral services for Mildred V. Jants, 91, of Canby, will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 5 at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Canby, with Pastor Katherine Rood officiating.  Burial will be in the Canby City Cemetery.
   Karen Olsen will be the organist, with the congregation singing "What A Friend We Have In Jesus" and "I, The Lord Of Sea And Sky".  There will be special music by Bruce Melby, singing "On Eagles' Wings" and "Danny Boy". The honorary casketbearers will be all of Mildred's grandchildren, and the active casketbearers will be Curtis Gibson, Mark Gibson, Robert Swenson Jr., Wade Tongen, Richard Tongen, and Robert Swenson Sr.
   Mrs. Jants died on Wednesday, Feb. 2, at the Hillcrest Health Care Center in Rush City, MN.
Mildred V. Jants was born on November 2, 1913 in Canby, Minnesota, to parents Alexander and Lena (Nannestad) Knutson.  She was baptized at the Methodist Church in Canby, and was confirmed at First English Lutheran Church.  She attended school in Canby, graduating from Canby High School.
   On February 4, 1936 she was married to Alfred Jants at her parents? home, and they were long-time residents of the Canby area.  In addition to being a mother and homemaker, Mildred was involved as a Canby Girl Scout leader for all of her girls.  She took training to be a camp director and organized camping activities.
   Mildred was a member of Our Saviour's Lutheran Church, where she was active in the Ladies' Aid, and enjoyed preparing food for many different functions over the years.  She had learned to cook when she was six years old.  In 1997 at the age of 84, she compiled a cookbook of favorite recipes, both her own and those of friends and relatives.  She included some family history, "old recipes", and ?home remedies? that came with the warning ?Don't try this at home!?.  She is remembered by her family as a wonderful mother and grandmother.
   Mildred is survived by her daughters:  Marlene Gibson of Fridley, MN,  Dorene (and Robert) Swenson of Hewitt, TX,  and Juanita (and Richard) Tongen of Harris, MN;  eight grandchildren;  and seventeen great-grandchildren.
   She was preceded in death by her parents;  her husband, Alfred, in January of 1997;  an infant daughter, Ruby Ann;  four sisters:  Ruth, Florence, Lillian, and Hazel;  and one son-in-law, Cecil.

John Jelen

   Mass of Christian Burial for John Jelen, 85, of Minneota will be at 11 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 28, 2005, at St. Edward's Catholic Church in Minneota.
   Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Sunday, with a prayer service at 6:30 p.m. at Rehkamp-Horvath Funeral Home in Minneota. Visitation continues from 9-10:30 a.m. Monday at the funeral home. Interment follows the service at St. Edward's Catholic Cemetery in Minneota. Military Rites will be performed by American Legion Posts of Minneota and St. Leo and the VFW Post.
   John Paul Jelen was born on June 25, 1919, in St. Leo to Frank and Anna (Kockelman) Jelen. He grew up and farmed in rural St. Leo. On Nov. 18, 1941, John was united in marriage to Martha Claeys. In 1942, he was drafted in the U.S. Army. He served in the Philippines during World War II and was the recipient of the WW II Victory Ribbon, the Philippine Liberation Ribbon, the APTC Ribbon with one Bronze Service Star and the ATCM Good Conduct Ribbon. After his discharge, he returned and farmed near St.Leo and later operated a Septic Pumping Business until 1970 when he and Martha moved to Minneota. John was the foreman for the Minneota City Crew for many years and continued working for the city until the spring of 2004 as supervisor at the city dumping ground. He enjoyed reading, old time music, visiting with people and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. John had lifelong passion for horses and enjoyed rodeos, etc. He will be remembered for sitting in his driveway, basking in the sun.
   John died on Thursday, February 24, 2005, at the Minneota Manor in Minneota.
   He is survived by children Sandy (Bob) Avery of Alexandria, Doug (Donna) Jelen of Porter, Dewey (Marina) Jelen of Farmington, NM, Sharon (Dave) Murry of Elko, NV, ten grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren, one expected grandchild, one brother and three sisters.
   He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, three sisters and one great-grandchild.

Brian Jensen

   Funeral Service for Brian Jensen, 49, of Minneota, will be at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, May 6, 2005 at Hope Lutheran Church in Minneota. Visitation will be from 6:00 p.m. ­ 8:00 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. at Rehkamp-Horvath Funeral Home in Minneota. Military Rites provided by American Legion Post # 199 of Minneota.
   Brian Duane Jensen was born on January 9, 1956, in Marshall, to John V. and Betty Jean (Ness) Jensen. He grew up and attended school in Minneota. Brian served in the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged in 1977. He worked at a variety of jobs including at Schotts, as a heavy equipment operator at the wash plant, for custom combining out of South Dakota and as a mechanic. He enjoyed helping people, tinkering on cars and other mechanical projects and spending time with his pet cats. Brian died suddenly at his home on Tuesday, May 3, 2005. He is survived by his daughter Tracy Spriggs of Afton, OK., grandchildren Brooke, Faith and Torrance, parents John V. and Betty Jensen of Minneota. Siblings Arlyss (Lenny) Hovland of Marshall, John Ronald of Canby, Gary (Renee) of Deltona, FL, Bonnie (Myron) Walters of Faribault, Crystal (Jay) Gislason of Gary, SD., nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Elna Jeppesen

   Funeral services for Elna Jeppesen, 88, of Canby, will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, June 15, at Antelope Hills Church of Christ in rural Canby, with Pastor Dean Brand and Steve Maas officiating.  Burial will be in the Canby City Cemetery.
   Louise Maas will be the organist, with the congregation singing "What A Friend We Have In Jesus".  There will be special music by Jan Schnaser, singing "In The Garden".  The pallbearers will be Brad Jeppesen, David Craigmile, Charles Craigmile Jr., Chris Husby, John Mathews Jr., and Ivan Anderson.
   Visitation will be held from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesday at the Birk Funeral Home in Canby, with a prayer service at 6:30 p.m.  Visitation will continue at the church on Wednesday, one hour prior to services.
   Mrs. Jeppesen died on Friday, June 11, 2005, at the Senior Haven Nursing Home in Canby.
   V. Elna Jeppesen was born on November 8, 1916, in Hammer Township to Arthur and Martha (Smith) Craigmile.  She attended District 100 school in Lac Qui Parle County. She was baptized in Lake Cochrane as a lifelong member of Antelope Hills Church of Christ.
   Her parents moved to a farm in Lac Qui Parle County, and following her father's death the farm was operated by her brothers. Elna lived with her mother on a farm near Boyd for a time, until she went to work as a clerk at Olson's Grocery in Canby.  During this time she boarded at the home of Lawrence and Myrtle Craigmile.
   On June 15, 1952, Elna was married to Orlin Jeppesen at Antelope Hills Church of Christ. They resided on Orlin's farm in Marble Township, south of Canby. They lived together on the farm for 48 years, before retiring in 1998 and moving into Canby. As a homemaker Elna enjoyed cooking and baking, watching the Minnesota Twins on TV, and visiting with her family and friends.
   Elna is survived by her husband, Orlin; her sisters-in-law, Myrtle Craigmile of Canby, and Florence Craigmile of Boyd;  and by many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
   She was preceded in death by her parents; and her brothers: Charles (and wife, Myrtle), Lawrence, George (and wife, Inez), and Donald.

Gladys Irene Jesme

   Funeral Services for Gladys Irene Jesme, 97, of Canby will be held Friday, July 22 at 2 p.m. at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Canby.
   Visitation will be Thursday, July 21 from 5 to 7 p.m. with a Prayer Service at 7 p.m. at Birk Funeral Home in Canby. Burial will be at the Canby City Cemetery.
   Gladys was born April 25, 1908 in Brandt, S.D., to parents Peter C. and Mabel (Paulson) Jesme. She was baptized at Highland Church by Pastor P.O. Lovseth and confirmed at St. Stephans Church by Pastor Clarence Haugen.
   Gladys attended rural Rock Valley School, Canby High School, and received her business education in Watertown, S.D. After graduation she went to work in Clear Lake, S.D., for Walter Gronna as a court reporter and then worked as Deputy Register of Deeds before beginning work at Deuel County Abstract Company in Clear Lake for E.E. Walseth and later for Tracy Walseth until her retirement in 1976. She then made her home in Canby until entering the Hendricks Care Center in August of 2003.
   Gladys passed away Tuesday, July 19, 2005, at the Hendricks Nursing Home in Hendricks.
   Gladys was a member of Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Canby. During the years spent in Clear Lake she attended St. Pauls Lutheran Church and enjoyed singing in the choir and volunteering secretarial help in the Church Office. She was an excellent cook and seamstress and she loved to share talents and time with her family and friends.
   Gladys is survived by her brother, Robert Jesme and his wife Louise, and her sisters, Bernice Severson and Ruth Jesme of Canby,, and Deloris Griffith of Farmington, N.M., and many nieces and nephews, and cousins.
   She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Ernest Jesme, two sisters Pearl Roske and Mayme Palm, and her brothers-in-law Arnold Palm, Donald Roske, and Palmer Severson.

Andrew Jerzak

   Mass of Christian Burial for Andrew "Shorty" Jerzak, 75, of Canby, will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 28, at Ss. Cyril & Methodius Catholic Church in Taunton, with Father Andy Michels as Celebrant.  Burial will be in St. John Cantius Catholic Cemetery in Wilno.
   Marian Sarbaum will be the organist, and the lector will be Ray Popowski.  The giftbearers will be Ann Rosa, and Claren and Carley Novotny.  Mass servers will be Andrew and Alexa Swedzinski, and the eucharistic ministers will be Norma Traen and Delores DeVos.  The casketbearers will be Charles Jerzak, Steven Jerzak, Bruce Novotny, Wayne Jerzak, Ben Rosa, and Terry Winter.  The funeral pall will be placed by Wayne and Janet Jerzak, and Cindy and Bruce Novotny.
   Visitation will be held from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday at the Birk Funeral Home in Canby, with a parish wake service at 7 p.m.  Visitation will continue at the church on Saturday, one hour prior to Mass.
   Shorty died on Wednesday, May 25, at Senior Haven in Canby.
   Andrew A. Jerzak was born on March 4, 1930, on a farm in Limestone Township of Lincoln County to Frank and Mary (Czapski) Jerzak.  He received the sacraments of Baptism, First Holy Communion, and Confirmation at St. John Cantius Catholic Church in Wilno.
   On Sept. 18, 1951, Shorty was married to Audrey Tomaszewski at St. John Cantius Church.  They lived on a farm near Taunton, where they farmed for many years.  Shorty retired from farming in 1995, and in 2001 he and Audrey moved into a home in Canby.  He became a resident of Senior Haven in August of 2003.
   Shorty was a member of Ss. Cyril & Methodius Catholic Church in Taunton, where he served as an usher, eucharistic minister, and was a member of the Holy Name Society.  Some of his enjoyments in life included playing cards, watching sports on TV, and especially spending time with his children, grandchildren, friends, and family.
   He is survived by his wife, Audrey; his son, Wayne (and Janet) Jerzak of Canby; his daughter, Cindy (and Bruce) Novotny of Minneota; his grandchildren: Charles Jerzak of Madison, S.D., Ann (and Ben) Rosa of Canby, Steven Jerzak of Canby, and Claren and Carley Novotny of Minneota; sister, Adeline Brown of Ivanhoe; brothers: Emil (and Frances) Jerzak of Porter, Henry (and Arlene) Jerzak of Porter, and Norbert Jerzak of Taunton; a sister-in-law, Bernice Jerzak of Minneota; a brother-in-law, Tony Winter of Minneota; and by many nieces and nephews.
   He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers: Victor, Richard, Eugene, and Cyriel; sisters: Irene Winter and Alice Jerzak; and brother-in-law, Ray Brown.

Donald F. Jerzak

   Mass of Christian Burial for Donald R. Jerzak, 74, of Willmar, will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 14, at St. John Cantius Catholic Church in Wilno, with Father David L. Breu as Celebrant.  Burial will be in the church cemetery.
   Jeanne Bednarek will be the organist, and the lectors will be Wendy Rouse and Tracy Roche.  The giftbearers will be Amanda, Carrie, and Sarah Schalek, and the pall will be placed by Kyle Lade, Alyson Jensen, and Troy Lade.  The casketbearers will be Henry Jerzak, Anton Fier, Henrik Weverka, Leonard Schroeder, Greg Club, and Eugene Sovell.  Honorary casketbearers will be all of Donald?s nieces and nephews.
   Visitation will be held from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday at the Birk Funeral Home in Ivanhoe with a parish scripture service at 7 p.m., followed by the praying of the rosary.  Visitation will continue at the church on Saturday, one hour prior to Mass.
   Mr. Jerzak died on Wednesday, May 11, at St. Mary?s Hospital in Detroit Lakes.
   Donald Roy Jerzak was born on March 22, 1931, in Limestone Township of Lincoln County to Michael and Rose (Chlopkowiak) Jerzak.  He was the youngest of four children, his older siblings being Harry, Floyd, and Alma (Schalek).  Donny was a lifelong member of St. John Cantius Cathloic Church in Wilno, where he was baptized and confirmed.  He attended District 46 country school in rural Ivanhoe.
   In 1944 Donny became the main caretaker of his mother, Rose, and their family farm.  He enjoyed the labors of farming, raking hay, baling, and milking cows.  His satisfaction came from the baby calves he raised.
   Anyone who knew Donny has a story to recall.  He loved animals, especially horses, cats, and dogs.  He had a very distinct laugh and a smile that was contagious.  He enjoyed fishing with friends and family.
   In 1957 Rose and Donny sold the family farm and moved to Marshall, where Donny worked at Swift and Company from 1957 to 1963.  During that time he became a big part of Duane, Danny, and Bonnie Schalek's childhood lives.
   In 1963 he and Rose moved back to a farm in Royal Township of Lincoln County.  There they farmed, milked cows, and raised horses and dogs.  Donny prided himself in a simple, neat, honest lifestyle.  After his mother, Rose, passed away Donny sold the farm and settled in Willmar.  There he worked for Affiliated Medical Center in the maintenence department.
   Donny?s biggest joy in life was making people laugh at the stories he told.  He loved teaching his nieces and nephews how to play checkers and cards, especially the game ?Cheating Gappa?  Donny always knew where everyone in his family was and how they were doing.  He was a special man who will be greatly missed.
   Donny is survived by his sister, Alma (and Lawrence) Schalek of Canby;  his nieces and nephews:  Bonnie (and Wesley) Lade of Detroit Lakes,  Duane (and Barb) Schalek of Hendricks,  Daniel (and Marsha) Schalek of Cannon City, CO,  and Rose Ann (and Jim) Eastman of Ivanhoe;  and his grandnieces and grandnephews:  Kyle Lade, Alyson (and Todd) Jensen, Troy Lade, Tracy (and Tim) Roche, Wendy (and Shane) Rouse, Amanda, Sarah, and Carrie Schalek, Ryan (and Jessica) Eastman, Tina Eastman, Josh Eastman, David (and Dawn) Sterzinger, Daniel (and Shelley) Sterzinger, and Dale (and Robin) Sterzinger.
   He was preceded in death by his parents;  two brothers:  Harry and Floyd;  and a niece, Geraldine Sterzinger.

Clifford Albert Johnson
   Funeral services for Clifford Albert Johnson, 82, rural Madison, were held Tuesday, April 5 at Garfield Lutheran Church. Interment was at the Garfield Lutheran Cemetery. Johnson passed away on April 2, 2005 at the Madison Lutheran Home. Rev. Barbara Stroud-Borth officiated; organist was Phyllis Haugen, soloist was Dean Pearson accompanied by his wife, Joyce.
   Honorary casketbearers were Aniedra Nichols, Evan Johnson, Emily Johnson, Andrew Johnson and Isaac Johnson. Active casketbearers were Dick Adams, Ryan Smith, Eric Johnson, Jeff Storlien, Ritchie Smith and David Storlien.
   Clifford Albert Johnson was born on April 23, 1922 in rural Canby, to Eric and Goldie (Kjarvik) Johnson. Johnson attended country school near the family farm.
   Johnson was united in marriage on December 8, 1951 to Caroline Lundin at Providence Valley Lutheran Church. They lived, farmed and raised their family on a farm south west of Madison.
   Johnson enjoyed playing cards, farming, helping others, horseshoes, fishing and hunting. He was a lifelong member of Garfield Lutheran Church.
   He is survived by his wife; two children, Peggy Nichols, Aurora, Colo.; and Dale (Betty) Johnson, Blaine; five grandchildren, one great grandson; two sisters, Ann Lundin, Madison, and Donna Sorenson, Dassel.
   He was preceded in death by his parents.

Doris Johnson

   Doris W. Johnson. age 80, of Marshall, passed away at the Averab Marshall Regional Medical Center on Thursday, March 30, 2006.
   Funeral services were Saturday, April 1, at the Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church. Burial was in the Marshall Cemetery.
   Doris Wilhelmine Johnson was born on Oct. 3, 1925, in Canby to parents Emil W. and Helen L. (Tesch) Muller. She was baptized at the Zaccheus Lutheran Church in Canby by the Reverend William Hennig. She attended various country schools around Canby, Madison and Marietta. On April 6, 1941, she was confirmed at St. Johns Lutheran Church in Marietta.
   During her adult life she did housekeeping and spiritual work for the Lord.
   She is survived by her one brother, Charles (and Mildred) Muller of Marshall; six nieces and nephews, Jackie (and Ed) Bauman of Russell, JoAnn (and Joseph) Peltier of Brandon, Debra (and Ron) Warnke of Marshall, Donna (and Richard) Boerboom of Tracy, Charles John (and Rosalie) Muller of Marshall and William (and Jena) Muller of Tyler, TX; and many great nieces and nephews.
   She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother in infancy.
   She was a member of Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church at the time of her death.

Rosemary Johnson
   Rosemary (Rasmussen) Johnson, age 80, of Franklin, formerly of Canby, passed away Dec. 3, 2005, at Renville County Hospital in Olivia.
   Services will be Thursday, Dec. 15, at 11 a.m. at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Canby with Rev. Katherine Rood officiating.
   Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church. Birk Funeral Home in Canby is in charge of arrangements.
   Rosemary (Rasmussen) Johnson was born on March 15, 1925, in Lady Smith, Wis., to Holger and Pearl (Lindo) Rasmussen. She was baptized in the Lutheran Faith in Spooner, Wis. She was a resident of Centuria and Spooner and also Minneota, Canby, and Franklin. An English and history major from the University of Minnesota, Rosemary loved young people and reading. She was always passionate about anything she did. While living in Minneota, she taught English at Minneota High School.
   On June 26, 1954, Rosemary was united in marriage to Clifford Robert Johnson at the Lutheran Church in Minneota. Following their marriage, they made their home in Canby. She was a farm wife until 1967, when she became divorced and moved into Canby. Rosemary was a house mother for REM in Canby, a relief worker part-time and retired in 1985.
   Rosemary will be remembered for the enthusiasm and passion with which she lived her life. She loved long swims on hot afternoons. A good book, fiction or non-fiction, was always at her side. Games made Minnesota winters tolerable. A romantic, she loved the curiosity and passion of youth. In retirement she loved travel, especially Las Vegas and Mexico. She loved her family passionately. On growing old, many will remember her saying, "old age is not for sissies."
   Rosemary is survived by her son, Thomas D. (Frances) Johnson of Buffalo, N.Y.; her daughter, Shirley A. Heckler of Willmar; 2 granddaughters, Elizabeth Johnson of Medford, Mass., Katherine Johnson of Buffalo, N.Y.; and a sister, Shirley Tuttle of Madison, Wis.
   She was preceded in death by one brother, Lavern Rasmusen; her parents; and divorced husband, Clifford Johnson in 1968.

Kerry Joseph Kack

   Kerry Joseph Kack, age 38, of San Francisco, Calif., formerly of St. Leo, passed away unexpectedly due to heart failure on Sept. 13, 2005 in San Francisco.
   Funeral Services will be Wednesday, Sept. 21, at 10:30 a.m. at the St. Leo Catholic Church in St. Leo with Father Tony Hesse officiating.
   Visitation will be Tuesday, Sept. 20 from 4 to 8 p.m. with a Wake Service with Rosary at 7:30 p.m. at the Birk Funeral Home in Canby.
   There will be a private burial with family at the St. Leo Cemetery at a later date.
   Kerry Joseph Kack was born May 16, 1967, to Alvin and Irma (Bauler) Kack in Canby. He was baptized, received his First Holy Communion and confirmed at St. Leo Catholic Church. He attended Canby High School, graduating in 1985 with honors. While in high school, he was active in a number of activities and was a senior valedictorian. He earned a bachelor of science degree in art literature from St. Cloud State University in 1990 graduating Magna Cum Laude and with many honors. He was then a substitute teacher for the St. Cloud School District.
   In 1991, he moved to Tokyo, Japan and worked as an English teacher at Lado International College for three years. In 1994, he moved to San Francisco, where he remained until his death. He taught at Effectiveness Training then went to the San Francisco Institute of English for six years teaching English. He took a break from teaching and worked at buzzsaw.com, Ixia Flower Shop and The Other Shop ­ a consignment store. In 2002, he went back to teaching English full time at Test Magic, where he was currently employed at the time of his death.
   Throughout his teaching career, he was very dedicated to his students showing them much patience and gentleness. Being very talented, he had a love for art and music of all kinds. He spent time with his nieces and nephews, coloring and drawing cartoons for them and also for his friends. He painted the farm scene mural at the former site of the Canby Print Shop. He also had a billboard design used for Minnesota billboards in late 1985 ­ early 1986 promoting seatbelt use.
   He enjoyed spending time with friends and family, especially his nieces and nephews. He never realized how he always managed to touch the hearts of anyone he met and always left them with a smile. He will be so very much missed by many people.
   Kack is survived by his siblings; Kevin (Beth) Kack of Russell; Peggy Plageman of Dawson; Pam Philipp of St. Leo; his nieces and nephews: Kyle Kack, Justin Plageman, Jaimie Plageman, Jonas Philipp, Jared Philipp, and Julia Philipp; many aunts, uncles, cousins, and dear friends.
   He was preceded in death by his parents, Alvin (2003), and Irma (1993); his brother, Kenny (1985); and niece Kassie Kack (1994).

Veronica "Bud" Kack

   Veronica "Bud" Kack, 84, of Canby passed away Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2006, at 2:18 a.m. at Senior Haven Nursing Home in Canby.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, Feb. 4, at 10 a.m. at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Canby with Father Tony Hesse officiating. Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. with a wake service at 7 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 3 at Birk Funeral Home in Canby.
   Visitation will continue for one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday.
   Burial will be at St. Peter's Catholic Cemetery in Canby.
   Veronica "Bud" Kack was born on Sept. 7, 1921, in Chinook, Mont., to Nicholas and Sophia (Wolniewicz) Thomas. She was only 1 year old when they moved by train to a farm by Clements. She was raised on farms near Wabasso, Tracy, and Redwood Falls. She was baptized, received her first communion, and confirmed in the Catholic faith.
   On Jan. 25, 1944, she married Emil Joseph Kack of St. Leo. They farmed near Marshall and later moved to the Canby community, where they farmed in Norman Township. After retiring from farming, they moved into Canby. Veronica worked at the Canby Hospital for a short time. Emil passed away in February of 1988 and Veronica entered Senior Haven Nursing Home on July 3, 2002. Veronica was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church and the Ladies Altar Society.
   She is survived by her daughters: Elaine Arnold of Watkins; Linda (Gene) VanDyke of Gary, S.D.; and Molly Hanken of Buffalo; sons: Emil Jr. (Mary Ann) Kack Marshall; Robert (Cheryl) Kack of Canby; and Dennis (Jackie) Kack of Salina, Kan.; 24 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; sisters: Calverna "Kelly" (Gene) Glidewell of Springfield, Mo.; Eleanor (Lawrence) Paluck of Vesta; and Carol (Roland) Woelfel of Broomfield, Colo.
   She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Emil; one son, Thomas; one sister, Lorene Pohlen; and one son-in-law, Ronald Arnold.

Mavis Kamrath

   Mavis I. Kamrath, age 79, of Hutchinson, formerly of the Porter area, passed away May 8, 2006, at the St. Cloud Hospital.
Funeral services will be held Friday, May 12, at 1 p.m. at the Bethel Lutheran Church in Porter with visitation one hour prior to the service. Reverend Ellen Munter will officiate. Burial will be at the Bethel Lutheran Church Cemetery. Arrangements are with Birk Funeral Home of Canby.
   Mavis Irene (Hoseck) Kamrath was born Aug. 14, 1926, to George and Judith (Melby) Hoseck in Canby. She grew up in Fortier Township and attending elementary school in District 55. She graduated from Canby High School with the class of 1946.
   She married Robert Kamrath on Sept. 29, 1946. They lived in the Porter area until the summer of 1963 with their children. The family then moved to Hutchinson where she and her husband continued to reside. Not only did she share her care giving gifts with her family, but also as a nursing assistant at the Canby Community Hospital from 1963 to 1968 and briefly at the Hutchinson Hospital. She worked at the 3M Magnetic Tape Plant in Hutchinson from 1969 until her retirement 23 years later.
   In addition to caring for her others, she found joy in the animals that became part of the family ­ cats, dogs and even a raccoon. She enjoyed spending time in her garden, especially her roses, dancing and also maintaining family history.
   She will be deeply missed by her husband, Robert; daughter, Gale Thomsen; three sons, Gene, Wayne (Bev) and Neil; granddaughter, Sarah (Michael) Hoey; four great-grand children Nicholas, Austin, Lauryn and Ryan Hoey.
   She was preceded in death by her daughter Karen, parents and brother, Clifford.

Nancy Kelly

   Nancy Kelly, 56, of Montevideo, died Tuesday, Nov. 1, 2005, at her residence. 
   Memorial services were held on Friday, Nov. 4 at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Montevideo. Burial was at Canby City Cemetery.
Nancy Judith Kelly was born on Aug. 4, 1949, to Donald and Agnes (Van Derostyne) Bicek in Canby. She was baptized and confirmed at the Canby Presbyterian Church in Canby.  She lived on the farm near St. Leo until graduating from Canby High School in 1967. Upon graduation she attended Cosmetology School in Willmar before moving to Minneapolis. 
   On May 11, 1968 she married James (Jim) Kelly and they lived in Bloomington for several years raising their daughters Stacey and Tara.   She worked at Sterling Electric as their products department manager and purchasing agent.  She was a member of the National Purchasing Agents Association, and a member of the Montevideo VFW Auxiliary.  In 1983, she and her daughters moved to Montevideo where she managed Arts Dairy Freeze along with owner Ron Meyer.
   In 2002, she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer and began her long and difficult journey to beat this debilitating disease. She was an inspiration and role model to all who came in contact with her. Through sheer perseverance and determination, she continued to live her life as normally as possible enjoying her family and especially her grandchildren, shopping, crafting, quilting and reading.
   She is survived by her soul mate and best friend Ron Meyer, daughters Stacey (Jeff) Otte and their children Shelby and Riley Otte of Sauk Centre, Minnesota; Tara (Tony) Olson and their son Masyn Olson of Pennock, Minnesota; sisters Carolyn (Mike) Maertens of Edina, Sharon (Bruce) Madsen of Canby, and brother Duane (Pam) Bicek of Northfield, nieces, nephews and cousins. 
   She was preceded in death by her parents Donald and Agnes (Van Derostyne) Bicek, brother Jimmy (James) Bicek, sister-in-law Mary Bicek, Jim (James) Kelly, niece Kristina Bicek and her grandparents Fred and Bertha Bicek and Edmond & Emma Van Derostyne. 

Maynard W. Kleve

   Maynard W. Kleve, 69 died Wednesday, Sept. 14, 2005.
   Maynard was born on Jan. 8, 1936, in Ocheyedan, Iowa, to parents Harry & Geraldine (Steen) Kleve. At age 6, he moved with his parents to Worthington, where he attended schools. He attended Worthington Jr. College and graduated from Mankato State Teachers College Majoring in Math & Physics. He taught high school in International Falls, MN for three years. He then went to the University of Minnesota and received his Masters degree in Computer Science. In 1964, he was united in marriage to Gloria (Yackley) Kleve of Canby, his wife of 41 years.
   During his 44 years in the computer business, he has worked for General Electric, Honeywell, Bull World Wide Systems & CNA Insurance Co. These positions have moved him and his family to several states, Minneapolis, Des Moines, Iowa, Phoenix, Ariz., Atlanta, Ga., and currently Nashville, Tenn.,where he has lived for 27 years.
   He served his country in the military with the Minnesota National Guard. He has been a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church for 27 years and served on church council, Word and Witness Program and choir. He had a great love of sports and enjoyed helping coach his son, Jason's soccer, baseball, and hockey teams. He had a wonderful sense of humor and his life's motto was "Love, Duty, Honor, and Respect".
   He is survived by his wife Gloria, Nashville, and his son, Jason of Murfreesboro, Tenn., His Brothers Gary Kleve and Doug (Rhona) Kleve of Worthington, Rick (Marcia) Kleve of Sargeant Bluffs, Iowa, Sister Vicki (Mike) Baumgartner, Ham Lake, and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
   He was preceded in death by his parents, a niece, Hillery Kleve, and his grandparents.
A memorial service celebrating his life will be held Thursday, Oct. 6, at 10:30 a.m., at St. Matthews Lutheran Church, Worthington.

Rachel Knight
   Services for Rachel Knight, 84, of Dawson, were held at 1 p.m. Monday, March 7, 2005, at the Jones-Pearson Funeral Home in Park Rapids. Rev. John Norland officiated. She died March 3 at the Johnson Memorial Home in Dawson.
   Musical selections were "Great Speckled Bird", "In The Garden" and "What A Friend We Have In Jesus."
   Casketbearers were grandchildren: Julie Kaska, Marlene Nelson, Holly Marr, Darwin Torstenson, David Torstenson, Vance Woodbridge, Darla Torstenson and Scott Woodbridge. Interment was in the Lakeside Cemetery, Becker County.
   Rachel was born July 2, 1920 to Frank and Ellen (Garwood) Mitchell in Arago. She grew up and attended country school in Clover Township except for a year living in Nebraska. She worked doing housework and lending a hand with new babies.
   She was united in marriage to Gerald Knight on Sept. 12, 1940. They farmed in the Park Rapids area for many years, then moved to Montana for five years and returned to Park Rapids.
   She did baby sitting for area families. Her favorite hobbies included gardening, sewing, fishing, puzzles and visiting.
   She is survived by daughters Eleanor (Lyle) Torstenson of Dawson; Arcelia (Manley) Tor-stenson of Canby and Eunice (Bill) Zembsch of Springfield, MO; eight grandchildren and eight great grandchildren; three brothers Charley (Lucile) of Hines; Orvel and Frank of Park Rapids.
   She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and an infant son Virgil and a brother Roy.

 

Irene Kopka

   Mass of Christian Burial for Irene Kopka, 78, of Minneota, formerly of St. Leo, will be at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, January 24, at St. Leo Catholic Church in St. Leo. 
   Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. ­ 8:00 p.m. with a prayer service at 6:00 p.m. and a Rosary immediately following on Sunday at Rehkamp-Horvath Funeral Home in Marshall.  Visitation continues from 9:00 a.m. ­ 10:30 a.m. on Monday at St. Leo Catholic Church in St. Leo. 
   Interment follows the service at St. Leo Catholic Cemetery in St. Leo.
   Irene was born on July 5, 1926, in Omro Township to Mathias and Luella (Dahl) Roles.  She grew up near St. Leo.  After her education, she moved to Marshall to work.  In 1942 she moved to Minneapolis where she met Tony Kopka. 
   The couple was married on September 30, 1950, in St Leo.  In 1952, the couple returned to the St. Leo area where they lived the rest of their lives.  Irene enjoyed playing cards, bingo, sewing, camping and spending time with family.  She was a lifelong member of St. Leo Catholic Church and was active with Women's Club and Catholic Aid where she served as fraternal secretary from 1980 - 2003.  Irene died on Thursday, January 20, 2005, at the Minneota Manor in Minneota. 
   She is survived by her husband, Tony of St. Leo, children LouAnn (Steve) Herbeck of North Mankato, Elaine (Jim) Purvey of Bloomington, Kevin (Kathy) of Lake Crystal, Wanda (Gene) Bethke of Raymond, SD, Marlys (Gary) Carsten of Spring Valley, WI, Roy of Minneota, Scott (Heidi) of Crystal, Lorene (fiancé, Brad Jones)of North Mankato, nine grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, siblings, Leona Eischens of Minneota , Janet (Lawrence) Buysse of Minneota, Edward (Carol) Roles of Minneota, Doris Stachowski of Brooklyn Center, sisters in-law Bernice Roles of Marshall, sister and brothers in-law Hilaria (Joe) Rader of Clarkfield and Annella (Joe) Ringwelski of Bowlus. 
   She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, two brothers in-law and one nephew.

Lloyd Kopperud

   Funeral services for Lloyd Kopperud, 84, of Canby will be at 11 a.m. Monday, July 11, at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Canby with Pastor Katherine Rood officiating.
   Visitation will be held on Sunday, July 10 from 5 to 8 p.m. with a prayer service at 7 p.m. at Birk Funeral Home in Canby. Visitation will continue for one hour prior to services at the church on Monday.
   Burial will be at Florida Lutheran Cemetery, rural Canby.
   Lloyd passed away on Thursday, July 7, 2005, at Sioux Valley Canby Campus in Canby.
   Lloyd Thurman Kopperud was born Dec. 23, 1920, in Canby to Christian and Sina (Syverson) Kopperud. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Stephens Lutheran Church and graduated from Canby High School. On June 28, 1950, Lloyd married Carol Hanson at Florida Lutheran Church, rural Canby. Lloyd lived on the family farm in Freeland Township in Lac Qui Parle County from birth until 1992 when he and Carol moved to Canby.
   Lloyd was a member of St. Stephens Lutheran Church, Florida Lutheran Church, and was a current member of Our Saviours Lutheran Church in Canby. He was a past member of the Canby School Board, the Lac Qui Parle Mutual Insurance Board, the Blue and Gold Foundation associated with the Canby School District, and had served as treasurer of Florida Lutheran Church. Lloyd very much enjoyed spending time with family and friends.
   Lloyd is survived by his wife, Carol of Canby; two sons; Rolf (Barbara) Kopperud of Fargo, N.D., and Kevin (Joan) Kopperud of Moorhead; one daughter, Jane (Dean) Stoks of Porter; seven grandchildren, Jason (Jodi) Hansen, Christopher Kopperud, Michael (Nichole) Hansen, Judd (Kari) Kopperud, Kurt Kopperud, Adam Kopperud, and Jennifer Kopperud; one step-grandchildren, Brianna Stoks; and three great-grandchildren, Joshua and Johanna Hansen, and Braden Hansen.
   He was preceded in death by his parents, and two sisters, Beatrice Kopperud and Stella Jane Meredith.

Cleona C. Krogh

   Cleona Krogh, 90, of Canby, passed away May 23, 2006, in the Sioux Valley Senior Haven Nursing Home in Canby.
Funeral services will be Friday, May 26, at 10:30 a.m. at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Canby with Rev. Katherine Rood officiating. Visitation will be Thursday, May 25 from 4 to 7 p.m. with a prayer service at 6:30 p.m. at Birk Funeral Home in Canby.
   Visitation will resume at the church one hour prior to the service Friday.
   Burial will be in the Canby City Cemetery.
   Cleona C. Krogh was born October 24, 1915 to Jens and Mary (Hansen) Stefferud. She was baptized and confirmed in Marble Lutheran Church, rural Canby. She received her education from the Lincoln County rural schools.
   She was actively engaged in farming most of her life. She also worked as second cook at Canby Hospital, baker's assistant at Canby Bakery, a clerk at Variety Store and for seven years at Coil's Jewelry. She was a member of Canby Bit and Spur Saddle Club and her care and concern for all pets was very evident during her lifetime.
   Cleona was married to Clinton Wallace; he passed away on August 21, 1957. She then married Cornelius Krogh on September 14, 1958 at the Marble Lutheran Church. They lived and farmed in South Dakota until 1988 when they retired and built a new home in Canby. The couple was avid school sports fans and was awarded the 1988-89 Basketball Sports Fan plaque by Canby High School. Mr. Krogh died June 30, 1996.
   Cleona is survived by several cousins, nieces, nephews and many friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, baby sister, Myrth Rae, and two husbands, Clinton Wallace and Cornelius Krogh.

Garnett Marie Kulla

   Garnett Marie Kulla, 88, of Ivanhoe, formerly of Canby, passed away on April 10, 2006, at the Divine Providence Health Center in Ivanhoe.
   Memorial mass will be held Monday, April 17, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Canby with Father Tony Hesse officiating.
   Visitation will be Monday prior to the service from 9 ­ 10:30 a.m. at the church. Burial will be in the St. Peter's Catholic Cemetery in Canby. Birk Funeral Home of Canby is in charge of the arrangements.
   Garnett Marie Bresson was born Sept. 28, 1917, near Burr, to Henry and Artena (Barlow) Bresson. She was baptized, received First Holy Communion, and was confirmed at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Canby. She grew up and attended rural school in Yellow Medicine County.
   On Jan. 5, 1940, Garnett married Lawrence Kulla at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Canby. They made their home and farmed in Oshkosh Township for 44 years. After Lawrence passed away on Aug. 31, 1984, Garnett moved to Canby where she lived until May of 2001. For the past years, she has resided at Divine Providence Health Center in Ivanhoe.
   She was a life long member of St. Peter's Catholic Church in Canby, where she was a member of the Altar Society and Council of Catholic Women. She enjoyed playing the organ, singing and spending time with her family.
   Garnett is survived by her daughter, Lona (Mathias) Grengs, Jr. of St. Leo; six grandchildren, Terry Grengs of Delano, Steve (Cheryl) Grengs of St. Leo, Douglas (Lynn) Grengs of Volga, S.D., David Grengs of Delano, Dennis (Amy) Grengs of St. Leo, and Lisa (John) Hodena of Hinckley; and seventeen great-grandchildren.
   She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, three sisters, and nine brothers.

Margaret Kraus

   Mass of Christian Burial for Margaret Kraus, 102, of Minneota, formerly of St. Leo, will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, June 29, at St. Leo Catholic Church, with Father Tony Hesse as Celebrant.  
   Burial will be in St. Leo Catholic Cemetery.
   Kayla Kraus will be the lector, and the giftbearers will be Megan Knutson, Alli Kraus, Dana Kraus, Carly Hawkins, and Sarah Hawkins. Mass servers will be Cody Kraus, Nicole Kraus, and Wyatt Kraus, and the eucharistic ministers will be Kayla Kraus, Margaret Doom, and Shirley Jelen. The organist will be Clayton Callens.
   Visitation was scheduled from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday at the Birk Funeral Home in Canby, with a C.C.W. Rosary at 7 p.m. and a wake service at 7:30 p.m. Visitation continued at the church on Wednesday, one hour prior to Mass.
   Mrs. Kraus died on Sunday, June 26, 2005, at the Minneota Manor.
   Margaret Kraus was born on Feb. 20, 1903, in Bosendorf, Luxembourg, to Hubert and Anna (Meder) Berckes. She was baptized received her First Holy Communion, and was confirmed in Luxembourg.
   On Aug. 25, 1929, she was married to Henry Kraus. Margaret and Henry farmed in the St. Leo area until Henry passed away in 1960. Margaret moved to St. Leo at that time and lived in her own home until the age of 94, when she moved to Minneota Manor.
   She was a member of St. Leo Catholic Church and the C.C.W. Some of her enjoyments in life included crocheting, growing flowers, gardening, playing cards, and especially spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
   She is survived by her son, Hilary (and Charlotte) Kraus of Taunton; her grandchildren: Randy (and Christine) Kraus, Sandy (and Steve) Knutson,  Jackie (and Doug) Lage, James (and Jeanne) Kraus, Mary (and Dennis) Thooft, Cindy (and Scott) Ewing, Mary (and Bert) Elliot, Kathy (and Fred) Hawkins,  Debbie (and Kurt) Krey, Mickey (and Roxanne) Muhvich, Steve (and Brenda) Muhvich, and Terry (and Kevin) Woolsteneroft; 22 great-grandchildren; and her nieces and nephews in Luxembourg.
   She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry; her daughter, Ramona; son-in-law, Joseph; five brothers and one sister from Luxembourg.

Mary S. Lacek
   Mary S. Lacek, age 88, of Canby, passed away Monday, April 17, 2006 at Sioux Valley Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD.
   Mass of Christian Burial will be Thursday, April 20, at 10:30 am at the St. John Cantius Catholic Church, Wilno. Visitation will be Wednesday from 4-8 pm at the church with prayer service at 7 pm and a rosary at 7:30 p.m. Visitation will continue at the church on Thursday one hour prior to the service. Father Harry Behan will be the Celebrant.
   Burial will be at the St. John Cantius Catholic Cemetery.
   Mary was born on Oct. 25, 1917, the daughter of John & Kate (Sadergaski) Sik. On July 27, 1937, she married Anthony Lacek at St. John Cantius Catholic Church. Mary was a life-long member of St. John Cantius Catholic Church. Her favorite hobbies were cross-stitching, sewing, handy-work, gardening, flowers and cooking.
   Mary is survived by seven children, Helen Appel (special friend, Bob Timmer); Leona(Clarence) Lietz; Darlene "Dolly" Sik; Lawrence(Diane) Lacek; Dorance (Elaine) Lacek; Arlene (Bob) Kanz; Wayne (Kathy) Lacek; 16 grandchildren; 32 great grandchildren, four great great grandchildren; 2 brothers, Martin (Lydia) Sik and Vincent (Eloise) Sik; 2 sisters, Eleanor Wiering and Rozy Thompson; many nieces and nephews.
   She was preceded in death by her parents; husband-Anton; two son-in-laws-LaVern Appel and Floyd Sik; three grandchildren.

Quintan H. Lanners

   Funeral services for Quintan H. Lanners were held June 30 at St. Henry's Catholic Church in Monticello with Rev. Tim Rudolphi officiating. Burial was in Ft. Snelling National Cemetery.
   Casket bearers were Ron VanHyfte, Michael Reinert, Joe Des Marais, Pete Johnson, Jim Yunker, Roger Lanners, Jerry Fischbach and Daryl Fischbach.
   Lanners was born No. 4, 1931, in St. Leo to N.J. and Magdelena (Grengs) Lanners. He served in the Korean Conflict from 1951 to 1953. He married June R. Fischbach in Osseo May 12, 1956.
   Lanners was a builder and developer in Maple Grove, Montecello and Big Lake.
   He is survived by his wife, June; sons, Nick (Jean), Greg (Susan), Jeff; grandchildren, Kaitlin, Caleb, Clay, Drew, Spencer, Dillon; sister, Isabelle (Gene) Reinert; mother-in-law, Alvina Fischbach; brothers-in-law, Jerry (Mimi) Fischbach, and Daryl (Ellen) Fischbach.
   He was preceded in death by his parents, twin infant sons, sisters and brother, Agatha Robeck, Josephine Woods, Al, Colette VanHyfte, Dale, Thrasilla Lanners and Alquin

Tillie J. Lauck

   Memorial services for Tillie J. Lauck, 95, of Canby, will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 29, at First United Presbyterian Church in Canby, with Pastor Don Davis officiating.  
   Norma DeWit will be the organist, with the congregation singing "How Great Thou Art", and "Amazing Grace".  Burial will be in Maplewood Cemetery in Luverne.
   Mrs. Lauck died on Sunday, Jan. 23, at the Senior Haven Nursing Home in Canby.  The Birk Funeral Home in Canby is in charge of the arrangements.
   Tillie Lauck was born in Holland on Aug. 12, 1909, to Johanese and Geertje Elzenga.  In 1920 the Elzenga family sailed into New York Harbor and Ellis Island. With siblings Joe, Dave, and John, they emigrated to southwestern Minnesota.
   Tillie was married to Clarence Lauck at Luverne, Minnesota in 1932.  After their marriage they farmed near Hardwick and Tracy, and then moved to the Canby community in 1947.  In 1984 they retired from farming and moved into Canby.
   She is survived by her daughter, Judy of Minneapolis;  brother and sister-in-law, Dave and Eloise Elzenga of Washington;  and nine grandchildren:  Julie Boggini, Kevin Lauck, Sheila Lauck, Pamela Lauck, and Kim Boggini, all of California,  Troy and Erin Mangan of Minneapolis,  and Erica and John Breneman of St. Paul.  Also surviving are daughter-in-law, Betty Lauck of California;  son-in-law, Don Breneman of St. Paul;  and 11 great-grandchildren.
   Tillie was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence;  son, Vernon;  daughter, Nancy Breneman;  her parents;  and brothers, John and Joe Elzenga.

Gladys Ione Larson

   Gladys Ione Larson, age 79 of Renville passed away Wednesday, May 4, 2005 at the Renville County Hospital in Olivia. A Memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, May 9, 2005 at the Wrenwood Home in Renville. Interment will be held in the Renville Cemetery following the service. The Redwood Valley Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.

Arnold Herman Leppke
   Services for Arnold Herman Leppke, 83, who passed away Friday, October 4, in Montevideo, at his home, were held at St. John's Lutheran Church, in Omro Township on Thursday, October 10 at 2:00 p.m., with interment at St. John's Lutheran Cemetery.
   Arnold Leppke was born June 15, 1919, in Tyro Township at the home of his parents Fred T. and Martha (Roske) Leppke.
   Leppke was baptized at St. John's Lutheran Church and confirmed in May of 1933 at St.John's. Leppke attended St. John's Parochial School and District 49.
   On October 13, 1940 he married Elna Elenora Weckwerth at St. John's (Sparta) Parsonage. Leppke was a member of St;. John's Lutheran Church where he served as an Elder and also was on the St. John's School Board.
   Leppke enjoyed fishing and his fishing trips to the Missouri River with his brothers and family. He enjoyed the lake cabin on Lake Minnewaska; playing cards at the Senior Center in Montevideo and Clarkfield,; and also enjoyed his activities with the Boyd Sportsman Club.
   Survivors are his wife, Elna, resident at Luther Haven; a daughter-in-law Ruth Leppke, Canby; grandchildren, Janet (John) Leppke Nutter, Ramsey, Martha (Troy) Leppke Muhl, Minneota, David (Angela) Leppke, Canby; five great grandchildren, Dallas Muhl, Kristian Leppke, Garret Muhl, Sierra Nutter and Kaylee Leppke; brothers Victor and Ed Leppke; and sister Lydia (Erhardt) Kroepp. He was preceded in death by his parents; sons, Lyle and Donald; and brother Harry.

Gladys Lindberg
   Gladys Lindberg, 85, of Canby, passed away on Wednesday, March 8, 2006 at the Senior Haven Nursing Home in Canby.
Funeral services will be Saturday, March 11, at 1 p.m. at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Canby with Rev. Katherine Rood officiating.
   Visitation will be Friday, March 10 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Birk Funeral Home in Canby. Visitation will resume one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday.
   Burial will be in the Grace Lutheran Cemetery in Dawson.
   Gladys Viola Lund was born April 18, 1920, in Canby to parents Orrin Joy Lund and Anna Sophie (Ranch) Lund. She was raised in the family home on East First Street in Canby and attended Canby High School. As a child, Gladys enjoyed her Sunday school classes and was a member of the Girl Scouts. When she was older, she helped her parents in the Lund Café after school each day, where she continued to work after High School graduation.
   On Jan. 4, 1942, Gladys married John Alfred Lindberg son of Oscar and Mary (Liedke) Lindberg of Canby. John and Gladys farmed in Oshkosh Township until the late 1960's when they moved to rural Dawson. They continued farming near Dawson until 1974 when they retired and moved to Dawson. After John passed away in 1985, Gladys moved to Valley View Apartments in Canby where she lived until moving to the Senior Haven Nursing Home. She was a resident at Senior Haven Nursing Home for the past few years until she passed away on March 8, 2006 at the age of 85 years, 10 months, and 18 days. Her brother, Bill Lund, along with her children have been in attendance at her side for the past few weeks.
   Gladys was the Great-granddaughter of Ove Nicolai Lund who came to Canby in 1876 and started his merchandise business. She has spent her entire life in and around the Canby area. Gladys loved to crochet and work crossword puzzles and cryptograms; on her night stand you could always find a puzzle book and several library books.
   She is survived by her brother, William "Bill" Lund of Canby; her sister, Betty Rasmussen of Richland, Wash.; three children, Judy Fashant of Maple Grove; June Jahn of King George, Va.; and Roger Lindberg of Sibley, Iowa; grandchildren, Jason Jahn of Richmond, Va.; Christopher Jahn of Mount Laurel, N.J.; John Jahn of Fredericksburg, Va.; Tyson Jahn of Fredericksburg, Va.; Brandy (Jahn) Parrish of King George, Va.; Terry Fashant of Maple Grove; Richard, Anthony, Jennifer, and Rebecca Lindberg of Sibley, Iowa; Great-grandchildren, Malachi Parrish; Holly Jahn; and a step-great-grandchild, Laura Lindberg.

Pearl I. Lindner

  Funeral services for Pearl I. Lindner, 91, of Ivanhoe, will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 4, at Nicolai Lutheran Church in Canby, with Pastor Scott Muehlberg officiating.  Interment will take place at Riverside Cemetery in Moorhead, MN.
   Jane Stoks will be the organist, with the congregation singing "What A Friend We Have In Jesus", "Amazing Grace", and "How Great Thou Art".  The pallbearers will be Troy Lindner, Michael Woessner, Steve Dastych, David Kalsow, Luke Kalsow, and Kenneth Spittle.
   Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Monday at the Birk Funeral Home in Ivanhoe, and will continue at the church on Tuesday, one hour prior to services.
   Mrs. Lindner died on Tuesday, Dec. 28, at the Divine Providence Health Center in Ivanhoe.
   She was born on June 9, 1913 in Moorhead, Minnesota, to parents Frank and Margaret (Gast) Kalsow.  She attended schools in Moorhead, graduated from Moorhead High School in 1930, and then attended Interstate Business College in Fargo, North Dakota.
   She and John Lindner were married on February 15, 1935 in Fargo.  They lived in Moorhead and Fargo until 1952, when they bought a Coast-to-Coast Hardware store in Ivanhoe, Minnesota.  They operated the store until 1974, and following the sale of their business they spent their winters in Arizona.
   Pearl was a member of Nicolai Lutheran Church in Canby.  She was also a former member of the American Legion Auxiliary, the Home Study Club, and the Divine Providence Hospital Auxiliary.  She enjoyed her family and friends, and she loved to travel, especially the many trips to Arizona with John and her sister, Laura.
   She is survived by her son, Jack (and Nancy) Lindner;  her daughter, Eileen (and Steve) Dastych;  her grandchildren:  Tania (and Mike) Woessner, and Troy (and Malissa) Lindner;  her great-granddaughters:  Tatiana, Taylor, and Tara Woessner, and Sabina Lindner;  her brother, Roy;  and many nieces and nephews.
   She was preceded in death by her parents;  her husband, John;  one brother;  and two sisters.

Emma Margaret Lokken

   Funeral services for Emma Margaret Lokken, 87, of Canby, will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 14, at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Canby.  Burial will be in the Canby City Cemetery.
   Karen Olsen will be the organist, with the congregation singing "How Great Thou Art" and "Rock Of Ages".  There will be special music by Howard and Sonja Hanson, performing "In The Garden" and "Whispering Hope".
   Visitation will be held from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday at the Birk Funeral Home in Canby, with a prayer service at 6:00 p.m.  Visitation will continue at the church on Friday, one hour prior to services.
   Mrs. Lokken died on Monday, Jan. 10, at Sioux Valley Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD.
   Emma Margaret (Ullmann) Lokken was born on March 23, 1917 in Norman Township, rural Canby, Minnesota, to parents Arndt and Katherine (Heeren) Ullmann.  She was baptized and confirmed at Zacchaeus Lutheran Church in Canby, and attended Washington School in Fortier Township.
   On April 8, 1944, Emma was married to Henry ?Hank? Lokken at First English Lutheran Church.  Their family was made complete when their two children, Garry and LuJane, were chosen by Emma and Henry.  They lived on a farm south of Canby in Marble Township, where they farmed for many years.   They retired in 1979, and moved into their current home in Canby in 1983.
   Emma was a faithful member of Our Saviour?s Lutheran Church in Canby, where she participated in the Hannah Circle and the Women of the E.L.C.A.  She was also a member of the Marble Busy Bee?s Extension Club, and the Canby Senior Citizens? Center.
   Among Emma?s many passions were first and foremost her family and her faith.  She also enjoyed quilting, crocheting, embroidery work, doing puzzles, cooking, baking, and reading.  She loved to go out to the farm to enjoy time with family, the flowers, and the backyard presence of many birds.
   Emma is survived by her husband, Henry;  her son, Garry (and Julie) Lokken of Balaton;  her daughter, LuJane (and Larry) Yackley of Canby;  her grandchildren:  James Yackley, Moriah Lokken, and Aaron Lokken;  her step grandchildren:  Sheryl (and Mike) Gunzenhauser, Susan (and John) Lujan, Larry (and Lori) Yackley, Tammy (and Rick) Lane, Kipp (and Karen) Yackley, and Todd (and Penny) Yackley;  17 step great-grandchildren;  and two step great-great-grandchildren.  She is also survived by three sisters-in-law;  and by many nieces and nephews.
   She was preceded in death by her parents;  four brothers;  two sisters;  one step great-grandchild;  and one sister-in-law.

Sheila Lee Lokken

   Funeral services for Sheila Lee Lokken, 50, of Canby, will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, June 8, at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Canby, with Rev. Katherine Rood officiating.  
   Burial will be in the Canby City Cemetery.
   There will be special music by Linda Kockelman, singing "Borning Cry" and "On Eagles' Wings". Karen Olsen will be the organist, with the congregation singing "What A Friend We Have In Jesus" and "How Great Thou Art". The casketbearers will be Ron Winter Jr., Doug Winter, Jesse Engesmoe, Shaun Vernlund, John Lentz, and Chaske Haas. Honorary casketbearers will be Keith Helgeson, Keith Petersen, and all of Sheila's co-workers and friends at Sioux Valley Canby Campus.
   Visitation will be held from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday at the Birk Funeral Home in Canby, with a prayer service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue at the church on Wednesday, one hour prior to services.
   She died on Saturday, June 4, 2005, at her home in Canby, following a diagnosis of cancer.
   She was born on Sept. 25, 1954, in Canb to Leo and Marvel (Johnson) Haas. She was baptized and confirmed at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church, where she was a lifelong member. She grew up on the family farm and attended Canby Public Schools, graduating from Canby High School.
   On Oct. 28, 1972, Sheila was united in marriage to Sheldon Lokken at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church, and they resided in Canby. In June of 1974 their son, Jamie, was born.  heila was a stay-at-home mom until Jamie was raised, and then went to work at the 66 Corner Store in Canby, where she worked for many years. She also worked at Maynard?s Grocery Store, and for the past five years she had worked as a dietary aide at Sioux Valley Canby Campus. She continued to work until being diagnosed with cancer.
   Sheila's greatest joy was spending time with her grandchildren. She also loved going shopping, and enjoying life with her family and friends.
   She is survived by her husband, Sheldon; son, Jamie (and Lisa) Lokken;  step-children: Lori (and Dennis) Nosbush and Jeff (and Amy) Lokken; her mother, Marvel Haas; grandmother, Evelyn Dahl; great-aunt, Adella Malkow, all of Canby;  grandchildren: Avery and Hailey Lokken, Nikki (and Joey) Horner, Ashley and Brady Nosbush, and Jesse and Jared Lokken;  a great-grandson, Ty Horner;  her brother, Terry (and Karol) Haas of Gary, S.D.;  her sister, Wanda (and Ron) Winter of Canby;  many nieces and nephews;  and aunts: Viola Haas of Madison, and Jeanette Haas of Marshall.
   She was preceded in death by her father, Leo Haas;  a granddaughter, Elizabeth Lokken; her paternal grandparents;  her maternal grandfather, John Johnson; and her step-grandfather, Duane Dahl.

Mabel Luing

  Funeral services for Mabel F. Luing, 101, formerly of Worthington, will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 10, at the Birk Funeral Home in Canby, with Pastor Dan Billings officiating.  Burial will be in the Canby City Cemetery.  Visitation will begin at 12:00 noon, and will continue until the start of the service.
   A memorial service will take place at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 11, at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Worthington.
   Mabel died on Thursday, Jan. 6, at the Murray County Memorial Hospital in Slayton, MN.
   Mabel Flora Luing was born on December 21, 1903 in Collins, Iowa.  Her parents were John Alfred and Flora Ann (Jones) Luing.  She attended school in Porter and Canby.  In 1919 she graduated from Canby High School as Valedictorian of her class.  She attended Normal Teacher?s training and then went to Mankato State College, graduating in 1926.
   She started teaching at Worthington Junior High School in 1927, and retired in 1970.  While at Worthington she taught English, History, Math, and was the school counselor for 12 years.
   Mabel was confirmed in the Canby Presbyterian Church, and in 1940 she moved her membership to the Westminster Presbyterian Church in Worthington.  During her membership she served as a deacon, elder, Sunday School teacher, president of the U.P.W., and member of the adult Bible study class.  Her church and church family meant much to her.  
   Mabel belonged to many professional associations.  She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, and was a charter member of Psi.  She was also chosen as Noble County?s Senior Citizen.  After her retirement she became the treasurer for Worthington?s Meals on Wheels program for 15 years.  Her hobbies were tatting and knitting.  She knitted over 50 pairs of mittens each year for the Community Christmas Basket program.  She loved to teach tatting through the Community Education program.
   She is survived by her nephew, Paul Dillon and wife Judy of Porter;  her niece, Lois Hoechst and husband Steve of Mankato;  grandnephews and grandnieces:  Jason Dillon, Dan Hoechst, Deb Schroder, Kim Dillon, and Jenny Hoechst.
   She was preceded in death by her parents;  her sisters:  Ruth Dillon and Bertha Risdahl;  a nephew, John Dillon;  and a grandniece, Jean Dillon.
   Blessed be her memory.
   In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Heritage Fund, a handicap accessibility project at First Presbyterian Church in Canby.

Lorraine M. Mandell

   Funeral Services for Lorraine M. Mandell, 83, of St. Paul, Minnesota, were be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, January 30, 2006 at Arlington Hills Presbyterian Church in St. Paul. Burial was in the Corinthian Cemetery in Farmington, Minnesota. Kristen Amanda was the Soloist, singing "On Eagles' Wings" and "Amazing Grace". Special Performances were by Grandson Jason Urbanski and Great Granddaughter Desirae Hammond. The congregation sang "How Great Thou Art". The Active Casketbearers were representing Lorraine's Grandsons: David Griffin, Robert Mandell III, Jeffrey Marx, Roger Voss, Jr., Jacob Weinmann, and Jesse Leis. The Honorary Casketbearers were all of Lorraine's Grandchildren. 
   Visitation was on Sunday from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Anderson Funeral Home in St. Paul. Visitation continued at the church on Monday, one hour prior to the services.
   Lorraine passed away on Thursday, January 26, 2006 at her home in St. Paul, surrounded by her loving family.
   Lorraine Magdalene Bohm was born in Austin, Minnesota on October 11, 1922 to Alden and Louise (Klotz) Bohm. She was Baptized, Confirmed, and made her First Holy Communion into the Christian faith as a child. She grew up in Farmington, Minnesota and attended Farmington schools. 
   Lorraine and her high school sweetheart, Bob Mandell fell in love and were married on November 8, 1938. This past year, they celebrated 67 years together. Lorraine spent her life loving and raising her seven children, along with 35 foster children. She had a lot of love to pass around. Bob and Lorraine also supported many children around the world through World Vision.
   Lorraine 'Loved To Tell The Story' and took her faith around the world. She never went anywhere without her beloved 'Jesus' button. As a gift to their Mom, the kids had 500 replicas of the pin made. Lorraine took those buttons on her travels to China and the Holy Lands and passed them out to everyone she met. 
    In their later years, Lorraine and Bob enjoyed winters on Padre Island, Texas. Lorraine loved collecting seashells along the shore. Bob painted beautiful pictures and messages about the Lord inside the shells. They walked the beach and dropped the painted shells back into the sand, and got such joy from seeing people 'find' them. 
     Lorraine was an avid Bible reader, often reading into the wee hours of the morning. She and Jesus were best friends, and we know that she is right by His side, looking down on us now. 
     She was an active member of the Arlington Hills Presbyterian Church, and enjoyed going to TOPS meetings with her friends. She liked puzzles, garage sales and reading. But her greatest joys in life were her kids and her Lord.
     Lorraine is survived by her husband, Robert Mandell of St. Paul; her children: Sharron (Richard) Birk of Canby; Daughter-in-Law, Joy Mandell of White Bear Lake; Suzanne (Gary) Fendrick of Cannon Falls; Dianna (Ken) Randall of Maplewood; Pamela (Tom) Stephanie of Maplewood; Michelle (Dave) Valentine of Rochester; and Steven Mandell of St. Paul; 21 grandchildren; 26 great grandchildren; 35 foster children; two sisters: Mary Lou Alexander of Farmington; and Gloria Neubauer of Bird Island; and many nieces and nephews.
     She was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Robert Jr.; and two brothers: Jack and Bob.

Louise Jeanette Maas

   Born Louise Jeanette Maynard was born in Elrod Township, S.D., on Oct. 5, 1920, she was the oldest daughter among seven children.
   She graduated from Henry High School in 1938 and attended Minnesota Bible College for one year. She married David Maas April 14, 1944.
   An unfamiliar silence has settled around her family and those who knew her as spontaneous music no longer emerges with her passing by any piano or organ. She will be remembered playing for weddings, church services, vacation Bible school and many other events. Her kitchen no longer smells like the ever-present fresh coffee and cookies that welcomed family, friends and strangers. Grandchildren will miss her Sunday dinners, summer vacation respites and love letters from Grandma.
   She passed away April 29, 2006, after a difficult struggle with pancreatic cancer.
   She is survived by her husband, David Maas, sons and wives Gary (Linda), Randy (Mindy), and Steve (Sharon) Maas, daughter Melanie (Ken) Buchanan, many beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren, a sister, Anna (Lloyd) Peterson, brothers Wayne (Barbara), Norman (Norma) Maynard, sisters-in-law, Elaine Maynard, Mitzi Maynard, and Betty Maynard, and numerous nephews and nieces.
   She was preceded in death by her parents, Ralph and Louise Maynard, and brothers, Ralph, Dwight and Meredith Maynard.
The family will receive family and friends from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday evening, May 2, at Antelope Hills Church of Christ, rural Canby, followed by a short prayer service.
   Visitation will resume one hour prior to the service at the church on Wednesday, May 3. A memorial service will be held at Antelope Hills Church of Christ at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, May 3, 2006 followed by graveside prayers in the church cemetery. Birk Funeral Home of Canby is in charge of the arrangements.
   In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the sanctuary window fund of Antelope Hills Church of Christ, Christian Student Fellowship, Gideons International and the Lustgarten Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer Research.

Patricia McLain

   Patricia M. McLain age 77 died January 4, 2006, at her home in Vallejo, Calif., after loosing her year long battle to cancer.
   She was born in Gary, S.D., on Aug. 8, 1929, to William and Odelia McLain Sr. The family moved to a farm at Canby in 1944. She graduated from Canby High School and from St. Catherine's college and St. Joseph School of Nursing with honors. Patricia entered the US Navy in 1951.
   After eight years as a navy nurse she continued her nursing career in the Los Angeles, South Pasadena and Vallejo areas devoting her love in the care of the elderly in the nursing home segment.
   She is survived by brother Justin of Canby, sisters, Rose Mary Amberg (husband Wally), Rochester, and Margaret Moore (husband Roy), Cushing, sister-in-laws, Zita, Gary, S.D., Diane, Little Falls, many nieces, nephews, and friends.
   Preceding her in death were her parents, brothers, Joseph, Gerald and William Jr. and one nephew.
   Services were held at Vallejo, California and burial at San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery.

Marvin William Carl Meyen
   Funeral services were held for Marvin William Carl Meyen, 87, on Wednesday, December 22, 2004, St. Peter's Catholic Church, Gary, S.D. Mr. Meyen passed away on December 19, 2004 at the Deuel County Memorial Hospital, Clear Lake, S.D. Monsignor Steve Barnett was the officiant, music was provided by Dorothy Sander, organist and Bruce Melby, soloist. Interment was at the Grandview Cemetery, Gary, S.D.
   Pallbearers were Jerry Keimig, Gary Ruigh, Jeff Engesser, Nick Allen, Bob Keimig and Bernard Mason.
   Marvin William Carl Meyen was born to John and Emma (Berent) Meyen on August 29, 1917 on the family farm in Yellow Medicine County, Minnesota near Canby. He was raised there and attended country schools through the 8th grade. Following his education he worked for Archer Daniels Flaxstraw Company in Porter.
   On February 27, 1946 he was united in marriage to Loretta Keimig at St. Peter's Catholic Church, Canby. Following their marriage, they lived and farmed near Canby and Gary. After they retired from the farm and moved to Gary, S.D. Meyen worked for Marion Schrunk Implement.
Meyen was a member of the St. Peter's Catholic Church, Gary, SD. He enjoyed playing cards and crossword puzzles.
   He is survived by his wife; three sons, Howard, Sioux Falls, SD, Harold (ArLoa) and Ron all of Gary, SD; three grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and one sister, Jane (Maurice) Reinertson, Hendricks.
   He was preceded in death by his parents, two sister and two brothers.

Hary Meyer

   Funeral services for Harry Meyer, 87, of Gary, S.D., will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, July 1, at the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Gary with Pastor Bruce Mueller officiating.
   Burial will be in the Grandview Cemetery in Gary. Randy and Joyce Meyer will sing "In The Garden" and "My Lord, My Life". The Congregation will sing "Just As I Am" and "Rock of Ages". Jeanie Pederson is the organist. The casketbearers are Harry's nephews: Harlan, William, and Wayne Benson, Bruce and Curt Melby, Bob Braucher, and Richard, Randy, David and Gary Meyer.
   Visitation will be held on Thursday from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Birk Funeral Home in Canby. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the services at the church.
   Harry passed away on Monday, June 27, 2005, at Senior Haven Nursing Home in Canby.
   Harry Rudolph Meyer was born on Nov. 4, 1917, to William C. and Bertha (Jessen) Meyer. He was baptized in Holstein, Iowa on Oct. 12, 1919, and confirmed at the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Gary in 1934.
   From Oct. 26, 1936, to March 27, 1938, Harry served in the Civilian Conservation Corps as a Caterpillar operator. He worked on a ranch in Oregon for 10 years before coming back to farm near Gary. He bought a farm in Manfred Township and started farming in 1949. While living on the farm, he served as Treasurer on the Manfred Township Board for 18 years. During those years, he also ran the road grader.
   Harry retired from farming in 1980 and moved to Gary, where he lived until he entered Senior Haven Nursing Home in February of 2005.
   He enjoyed family gatherings, playing pinochle, and visiting with friends at the Alibi.
   Harry is survived by his siblings: Herbert (Eleanor) Meyer of Madison, Minnesota; Rudy (Vera) Meyer of Marietta, Minnesota; Ella (Lloyd) Braucher of Canby, Minnesota; Clarence (Carol) Meyer of Boulder, Colorado; and William (Dolly) Meyer of Canby.
   He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers: Fred and Kenneth; and two sisters: Marie and Lillie.

William Milton

   William "Bucky" Milton, age 75, of Marshall, formerly of Canby, passed away at the Veterans Home in Luverne on Wednesday, Feb. 15, 2006.
   Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 18, at the Hamilton Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Marshall Cemetery.
Visitation will be 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. with a 7:30 p.m. prayer service Friday at the Hamilton Funeral Home. Visitation will continue at the funeral home on Saturday, one hour prior to the service.
   William "Bucky" Joe Milton was born to Joe and Emma (Schnarr) Milton on March 17, 1930, in Brandt, S.D. He was baptized and later confirmed into the Lutheran faith. He attended rural school near his parent's farm. On Nov. 29, 1951, he entered the US Army and served in Korea. He received the bronze star and was honorably discharged Aug. 28, 1953. After his return, he farmed in Dewel County.
On April 9, 1960, he was united in marriage to Nyla Manguson at Christ United Presbyterian Church in Marshall. After the couple's marriage, they farmed in Fortier Township until he retired in March of 1998. He went to work with Western Community Action until his health forced him to quit. He was a resident of the Veterans Home in Luverne, where he received loving care, for many years.
He is survived by his wife, Nyla, of Marshall; two sons, Jeffrey, of Seattle, Wash., and Kevin, of St. Paul; daughter, Sharon, of Mountain View, Calif.; four siblings, Harold (and Mabel) of Brandt, S.D, Lavera Reihe, of Clear Lake, S.D, Gloria (and Eldrow) Juenke, of Hendricks, and Fae (and Erwin) Baer, of Canby; brother-in-law, Vernon Moravetz, of Minneapolis; sister-in-law, Barbara Milton, of Hendricks, and many other relatives.
   He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Leeford and Clarence "Lefty"; and three sisters, Elaine Moravetz, Fern Svoboda and Joyce Milton.
   Bucky's enjoyments in life included fishing and baseball.
   He was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Canby.

Marie A. Mitchell

   Marie Mitchell, age 99, of Canby, passed away Thursday, Dec. 22, 200,5 at Senior Haven Nursing Home in Canby.
Funeral Services will be held on Monday, Dec. 26, at 10:30 a.m. at Nicolai Lutheran Church in Canby with Pastor Scott Muehlberg officiating.
   Visitation will be from 8:30 ­ 10:30 a.m. at the church on Monday, Dec. 26.
   Burial will be at the Canby City Cemetery. Birk Funeral Home in Canby is in charge of the arrangements.
   Marie A. (Spencer) Mitchell was born March 18, 1906, in Milledgeville, Ill., to Lewis and Emma Spencer. She graduated from Scotland High School in South Dakota in 1924.
   On Dec. 3, 1924, she married Frank L. Mitchell in Alexandria, S.D. They farmed at Scotland, Ethan, Mitchell and Gary. They settled west of Canby in 1934. To this union, six children were born. Joyce was probably the closest child to her mother, as they shared the same home until Marie went to the nursing home. She entered the Senior Haven Nursing Home in 2000, prior to that she lived on the farm next to her favorite son, "Frankie."
   Marie was a charter member of Hammer Busy Bees Extension Club. She belonged to the First Presbyterian Church in Canby. She loved her beautiful flower gardens and spent many hours there. Marie made many quilts and rugs for family and friends. She had two major rules in her home: we will not discuss politics or religion, as we all have different views.
   Marie is survived by her children; Joyce Mitchell, Alda Rae Lueders, Marilyn Kriese, Mavis Oellien and Franklin C. Mitchell; 21 grandchildren; Ronald (Kristina) Misener, Rita (Bruce) Nelson, Stuart (Elaine) Misener, Sonja (Neil) Pinkert, Steven Misener, Doug (Kathleen) Lueders, Harlan (Dawn) Lueders, Todd Lueders, Brad (Julie) Lueders, Nancy (Rick) Thompson, Bonnie Kriese, Betty Sanders, Barbara Kriese, Kathy (Bruce) Bludorn, Richard (Theresa) Kriese, Clifford Kriese, Jay Oellien, Jann Oellien, Lori (Eric) Evans, Deb Mitchell (Greg Carroll), Shelli (Chris) Gerlach, 38 great-grandchildren and 8 great-great-grandchildren.
   She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank and daughter, Jean Lueders.

John W. Myers M.D.

   Dr. John Myers, 78, passed away on Sunday, Nov. 20, 2005, at his home surrounded by his loving family.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, Nov. 23, at 10:30 a.m. at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Canby with Rev. Katherine Rood officiating.
   Visitation will be Tuesday, Nov. 22 from 4-8 p.m. at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church with a prayer service at 6:30 p.m.
Visitation will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Wednesday. Burial will be at the Canby City Cemetery.
   Myers was born Feb. 19, 1927, at Highmore, S.D. to Gerald and Ruth Myers, the first of four children. He was raised on a farm-cattle ranch and started his education in a one room country school house. His education continued at the University of S outh Dakota in premedical training. He was drafted into the army during WW II and spent 13 months there until his discharge. He resumed his medical training at the University of South Dakota and the University of Iowa, getting his MD degree in 1953. His internship was completed at Cook County Hospital in Chicago. While there he met and married Glenna Boyd. They moved to Canby in 1955 to join Dr. L. J. Monson in the Monson Clinic which later became the Canby Medical Clinic. Five children were born to them after arriving in Canby. Glenna died in 1975 of cancer.
   Myers has served in numerous community and medical capacities. He served as a member of the Canby city council, chairman of the Canby Business Development Corp at its inception, president of the Canby Commercial Club and was instrumental in its becoming the Canby Chamber of Commerce. He has been active in Our Saviour`s Lutheran Church, serving on the church council and as the council president. He was instrumental in promoting the development of the Canby airport, and was an active pilot for many years. He enjoyed gardening and was a master gardener.
   His main interest was in his chosen field of medicine. He was an active member of the Canby medical staff since 1955 and served a number of terms as president. He has been a member of the American Medical Association, The Minnesota Medical Association, Lyon Lincoln County Medical Society, the American Academy of Family Physicians and the Minnesota Academy of Family Physicians and on its board of directors for several terms. He, along with the other Canby physicians, has been active in the training of RPAP medical students in their third year of medical school, and is an associate clinical professor on the University of Minnesota medical faculty. He has been medical director of the local hospice team, the Geriatrics for Excellence Program, and the Canby ambulance EMT's. He was a member of the Child Protection team-West and the Yellow Medicine/Lincoln Abuse Program. He retired from the Canby Medical Center on Jan. 1, 1995, but continued weekend physician coverage for the hospital as needed. He completely retired Jan. 31, 2001.
   He married Doris Grengs in 1979, and they have both been active in community and medical activities.
   He was preceded in death by his first wife Glenna, his brother Jim and his stepson Gerry Grengs.
   He leaves his loving wife Doris, his children and their families, Lucy (Myers) Collins, her husband Scott and sons Joshua, Caleb, and Seth; daughter Ruth; son John Jr., his wife Denise and their children John III, Annie and Elsie; son Gerald , his wife Jackie and sons Noah, Adam, Luke and Evin; daughter Grace (Myers) Snyder, husband James, son Joseph and daughter Lauren; stepsons Mike Grengs, his wife Jodi and his children Alecia, Adam and Eric; Gerry Grengs' daughters Shelia, Amber and son Dustin; Jeff Grengs, wife Sherri, son Ryan and daughter Angela; Tom Grengs, wife Donna and daughters Becky and Krista; sister-in-law Lucille of Onida, S.D.; brother Ralph and wife Dee of Onida, S.D; sister Myra Franks and husband Claude of Coeur d`Alene, Idaho; and numerous great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
   He enjoyed his life in Canby and his role in helping to make Canby a better place to live.

Harold A. Mueller
   Funeral services for Harold A. Mueller, 82, of Canby, will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 10, at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Canby, with Rev. Katherine Rood officiating.
   Burial will be in St. Stephen's Lutheran Cemetery, with military honors provided by the Clark-Hanson V.F.W. Post #117 of Canby, and the Porter American Legion.
   Bruce Melby will sing "How Great Thou Art" and "On Eagles' Wings". The congregation will sing "Amazing Grace" and "Battle Hymn of the Republic". Karen Olsen is the organist. The casketbearers are Dean Toft, David Toft, Richard Borreson, Steve Krause, Gary Erickson, and Tim Erickson.
   Visitation will be held from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Wednesday at the Birk Funeral Home in Canby, with a prayer service at 5:30 p.m. Visitation will continue at the church on Thursday, one hour prior to services.
   Mueller died on Monday, Feb. 7, 2005, at Sioux Valley Canby Campus.
   Harold Arthur Mueller was born on June 23, 1922, in Elkton, S.D., to Edward and Ida (Wobbema) Mueller. He graduated from high school in Elkton, and worked as an airplane mechanic in California until he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force on March 6, 1943. He flew in the B-26 during World War II as a gunner on 26 missions. His plane was shot down three times and Harold was taken Prisoner of War for 81 days in Germany. He was honorably discharged on Oct. 9, 1945.
   On July 8, 1945 he married Valeria Krause in the Wisconsin Synod church on her family farm. He took watch repair training in Denver, Colo., and worked in Tracy until 1949, when he bought Walt Thompsen Jewelry Store in Canby. He was "Mueller the Jeweler" for 34 years. He was also a substitute mail carrier from 1954-1984. He and Valeria had three children: Barbara, Carol and Rodney. He enjoyed hunting, trap shooting, sporting clays, fishing, bowling, square dancing, playing cards, traveling, model airplanes, and flying his citabra airplane.
   On Dec. 24, 1990, he married Beatrice (Knutson) Pyle and gained three more children: Paulette, Greg and Jason. He enjoyed anything that involved family. He had a faithful hunting dog, Hershey, for 14 years.
   He was a member of Our Saviour's Lutheran Church, Aid Association for Lutherans, Canby V.F.W., Porter American Legion, and the Disabled American Veterans.
   He is survived by his wife, Bea Pyle of Canby; his children: Barbara (Norris) Peterson of Canby, Paulette Pyle of Apple Valley, Greg (Leona) Pyle of Lino Lakes, and Jason (Jenny) Pyle of Cincinnatti, Ohio; his grandchildren: Monica Peterson of Granite Falls, MN, Sheree Peterson of Robinsdale, MN, Kevin Peterson of Brookings, SD, Tara (Dan) Berg of New Prague, Lt. Judson (Kara) Citrowske , stationed at Incirlik NATO base in Turkey, Cpt. Victoria Citrowske of San Antonio, Texas, and Christy (Dan) Mohar of Vadnais Heights.
   He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Valeria; his daughter, Carol, and his son, Rodney.
