Donald Egertson

   Donald Ellsworth Egertson was born on Dec. 10, 1923, in Wallingford, Iowa, the son of Edward Julius and Bella Maria (Johnson) Egertson.
   As a youth, they moved to the Petersburg area. He graduated from Jackson High School in 1942, and entered the U.S. Army in 1944, during World War II, and served in the Pacific Theater, rising to the rank of sergeant. After his discharge, he came back to Petersburg Township and farmed with his family. On Nov. 13, 1948, he was united in marriage to Virginia Sievers in Old Ham, S.D. They lived near Petersburg, where they farmed. While farming, he worked for the Okoboji Boat Works, the Holiday Mountain ski area in Estherville for 15 years, did elevator construction for three years, worked for Glasstite in Dunnell for four years, and was a rural mail carrier for Jackson and Dunnell from 1972 until his retirement in 1993.
   In 1998, they moved into Jackson.
   He passed away at Sioux Valley Hospital in Sioux Falls, S.D., on Wednesday, Aug. 17, 2005, at the age of 81 years, eight months and seven days.
   He was a member of the Union State Line Lutheran Church in Petersburg, where he served on the church council as its president, was a trustee, and sang with the church quartet. He was a member of the Jackson American Legion and VFW posts, where he was an officer; and a school board member of District 75 country school. He enjoyed woodworking, gardening, restoring old John Deere tractors, and playing the harmonica for his grandchildren.
   He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Virginia Egertson of Jackson; two sons, Thomas Egertson and his wife, Colleen of Russell, and Daniel Egertson and his wife, Sherry of Thornton, Iowa; a daughter, Debra and her husband, Roger Bliss of Canby; seven grandchildren, Christopher (Amanda) Egertson, Corland Egertson, Kyle Egertson, Melissa (Gregory) Neve, Joshua Egertson, Tamara Bliss and Ryan Bliss; two great-grandchildren, Mariah Neve and Evan Neve; four sisters, Gladys (Howard) Lee of Volga, S.D., Caroline (Max) Whitlock of Jewell, Iowa, Arlene (Don) Nielsen of Jackson and Betty Egertson of Minneapolis; a brother, Kenneth (Gloria) Egertson of Ashby; and a sister-in-law, Peggy Egertson of Okoboji, Iowa.
   He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, James Egertson; one brother, Vernon Egertson; and two sisters-in-law, Yvonne Egertson and Barbara Egertson.

Tim Eilers

   Funeral services for Tim Eilers, 44, of rural Brandt, SD, will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 31, at Our Saviour?s Lutheran Church in Canby, with Pastor LeRoy Hopper officiating, along with Pastor Ed Williamson.  Burial will be in the Canby City Cemetery.
   Special music will be provided by Pastor Don Van Klompenburg, singing "The Anchor Holds", "When I Get Carried Away", and "Thank You".  Jane Stoks will be the pianist, with the congregation singing "What A Day That Will Be" and "I Know Who Holds Tomorrow".
   The honorary casketbearers will be all of Tim's many friends and seed customers.  The active casketbearers will be Bob Jelen, Joe Mamer, Duane Ludewig, Keith Nuese, Jason Kannegieter, and David Wuerch.
   Visitation will be held from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Sunday at the Birk Funeral Home in Canby, with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m.  Visitation will continue at the church on Monday, one hour prior to services.
   Tim died on Thursday, Jan. 27, as the result of a farm-related accident.
   Timothy Robert Eilers was born on November 27, 1960, to parents Robert and Wanda (Thorpe) Eilers.  He was baptized in Christ at the Full Gospel Assembly in Canby, where he was a life-long member.  Tim committed his life to Jesus at a young age.  He attended Canby Public Schools, and graduated from Canby High School.  In addition to being a full-time farmer, he also worked as a substitute at the Canby Post Office for a time, and became a seed and chemical dealer.
   On July 2, 1988 Tim was married to Jill Meade in Marshall, Minnesota, and they made their home on the farm in rural Brandt, South Dakota.  Tim had a great love of farming, and he enjoyed the many customers and friends he made as a seed dealer.  He had served on the boards of Canby Farmers Co-op, Canby Farmers Grain, and Full Gospel Assembly Church.
   Tim obtained his private pilot's license, and he loved to fly.  Some of his other enjoyments in life included golfing, boating, volunteering with the Roving Volunteers In Christ?s Service, and he recently joined the Gideons and the Holiday Ramblers camping group.  Above all, Tim loved spending time with his family and friends, and in service to the Lord in many different capacities.
   Tim is survived by his wife, Jill;  his children:  Shanda (and Chester) Frank of Hendricks,  and D.J. Eilers of Clarkfield, MN;  three grandchildren:  Tyson, Kolbe, and Courtni Frank, all of Hendricks;  his parents, Bob and Wanda Eilers of rural Canby;  his four sisters:  Lori (and Bob) Jelen of Canby,  Brenda (and Joe) Mamer of Canby,  Karen (and Duane) Ludewig of Owatonna, MN,  and Robin (and Keith) Nuese of Hendricks;  his mother-in-law, Connie Minsaas;  his father-in-law, Gene Meade;  and his grandmother, Viola Thorpe of Canby.  He is also survived by two sisters-in-law:  Judy Lundquist of Chisholm, MN,  and Jacky (and Ed) Aslesen of Montevideo, MN;  many nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, uncles; and many wonderful friends.
   He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents;  his maternal grandfather;  and by one niece.

Eileen M. Eischens
   Funeral services for Eileen M. Eischens, 60, of Paynesville, formerly of St. Leo, were held on Thursday, July 28, 2005 at St. Louis Catholic Church, Paynesville with Father Richard Leisen officiating. Interment was at the St. Leo Catholic Cemetery in St. Leo. Eischens passed away on Tuesday, July 26, 2005 at the Koronis Manor, Paynesville.
   Eileen Mildred Eischens was born on April 8, 1945 to Joseph and Eleanor (Abraham) Eishcens in Clarkfield. Eischens was baptized, confirmed and received her first holy commuion at the St. Leo Catholic Church. She attended St. Leo Catholic School and lived on a farm near St. Leo until she moved with her parents to Minneapolis. In 1977 she moved to Dawson following her father's retirement.    She became a resident of Blywood East Board and Care in Columbia Heights in 1984 and a resident of Washburne Court in Paynesville in 2001 and in October of 2002 she became a resident of Koronis Manor in Paynesville.
   Eishcens enjoyed jigsaw puzzles, bingo, playing cards, crossword puzzes, outings, latch hook crafts, making rosaries and visiting with family and friends. She was also a member of the Red Hat Society.
   Eischens is survived by one sister, Gerladine Ulen of Richmond, one brother, LeRoy (Carol) Eischens of St. Leo; and many nieces and nephews.
   She was preceded in death by her parents, and one brother-in-law, Ron Ulen..

Arlene M. Eisenmenger

   Mass of Christian Burial for Arlene M. Eisenmenger, 80, formerly of Marshall, will be at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 27, 2006, at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Marshall. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. ­ 8 p.m. on Thursday with a CCW Rosary at 4 p.m. and a parish prayer service at 7 p.m. at Rehkamp ­ Horvath Funeral Home in Marshall.
   Visitation continues from 8:30 a.m. ­ 10:00 a.m. on Friday at the funeral home.
   Interment will follow the service at St. Edward Catholic Cemetery in Minneota.
   Arlene Magdelene Lannerswas born on June 12, 1925, in St. Leo, to John P. and Mary C. (Dittberner) Lanners. She grew up in St. Leo. Arlene worked at the Egg Plant in Marshall for a time before her marriage. On Oct. 2, 1945, she was united in marriage to Alfred Eisenmenger in St. Leo. The couple farmed and raised their family south of Minneota. During this time, Arlene was a member of the St. Edward Catholic Church Altar Society, Guild 18, the Island Lake Buzzin Dozen Extension Club and was a very dedicated 4-H Leader of the Island Lake Zeps. In 1985, Arlene moved to Marshall. Here, she was an active member of the Widowed Support Group, Beginning Experience and the Hospital Auxiliary Thrift Shop. She was also an active member of the Catholic Daughters and the Holy Redeemer Funeral Serving Committee. Arlene was a recipient of the Bishop's Medal for Volunteerism. Education was very important to Arlene. She enjoyed taking Elder Hostel classes at SSU (now Senior College). Family gatherings and events were the highlights of Arlene's life. She enjoyed square dancing and old time dancing, indoor and outdoor gardening. She lived at Elder Care on Patricia Court for 17 months before moving to the Colonial Manor in Balaton in February of 2002.
Arlene died on Tuesday, January 24, 2006.
   She is survived by her children Donald (Helen) Eisenmenger of Rochester, Betty (Bill) Gifford of Russell, Darlene (Thomas) Greenwood of Billings, Mont., Jean (Jerry) Lupkes of Balaton, Joan (Daniel) VanLeeuwe of Ghent, daughter-in-law Mary Stommes of St. Joseph, 16 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, siblings Delphine (Robert ) Cobb of, Hemet, Calif., and Arnold (Maria) Lanners of Wright City, Mo.
   She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Alfred in 1982, son Leo in 1993, siblings Vernon Lanners, JoAnn Strei, Lu Lanners, Sister Norita Lanners, Adrian Lanners and special friend Stanley Frank.

Cora English
   Cora English, age 102, of Minneapolis, formerly of Canby, passed away April 16, 2006, at the Augustana Home in Minneapolis.
   A graveside service will be held on Saturday, April 22, at 1 p.m. at the Canby City Cemetery. The service is open to all friends to attend. Arrangements are with Birk Funeral Home in Canby.
   Cora was born on Jan. 6, 1904, in rural Hamburg, Iowa, the daughter of Edward and Nell (Martha) Rice. She was raised on the farm nine miles north of Canby. She moved from the Canby area to Minneapolis in the mid 1950's, which is where she married Harvey English. Cora loved to dance, listen to music, gardening and flowers, her favorite were roses.
   Cora is survived by several adopted nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; and one sister, Hattie Barnell.

Paul Erickson

   Paul Anthony Erickson, age 52, of Hendricks, passed away Sept. 11, 2005, at his home in Hendricks.
   Funeral Services will be Thursday, Sept. 15, at 11:00 a.m. at Christ Lutheran Church in Hendricks with Rev. Duane Baun officiating.
   Visitation will be Wednesday, Sept. 14 from 5 to 8 p.m. with a Prayer Service at 7:45 p.m. at the Birk Funeral Home in Hendricks. Visitation will continue for one hour prior to services at the church on Thursday.
   Burial will be at the Hendricks City Cemetery, Hendricks.
   Paul Anthony Erickson was born on June 18, 1953, in Hendricks to Philmon Erickson, Sr. and Virginia (LaPlante) Erickson. He was baptized and confirmed at First Lutheran Church in Hendricks. He was raised in Hendricks and graduated from Hendricks High School in 1971. He moved to Willmar where he lived for a short time and then moved to Moorhead, where he attended Moorhead State for one year. Following his education, he returned to Hendricks and worked for SDSU in Brookings, S.D., as the Custodial Supervisor until his death.
   On Oct. 3, 1997, Paul was united in marriage to Joyce Strassburg at their home in Hendricks. Following their marriage they lived in Hendricks and Paul continued to work at SDSU.
   Paul was a member of Christ Lutheran Church in Hendricks. He was a member of Pheasants forever, Ducks Unlimited, and National Rifle Association. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and spending time with his dogs. He was an outstanding athlete who loved sports and enjoyed the outdoors. He truly enjoyed his family.
   Paul is survived by his wife, Joyce Strassburg Erickson of Hendricks; mother, Virginia Erickson of Hendricks; two brothers, Philmon (Linda) Erickson, Jr., Randy (Phyllis) Erickson of New Brighton; three nieces; two nephews; four great-nephews; and his two dogs, Luke and Buck.
   He was preceded in death by his father Philmon Amos Erickson, Sr.

Ed Evanson

   Funeral services for Edmonde K. Evanson, 88,  of Canby, are 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 30, 2004, at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Canby with Pastor Katherine Rood officiating.  
Burial is in the Canby City Cemetery.  Bruce Melby will sing "Borning Cry" and "Beautiful Savior".  The congregation will sing "Abide With Me". "How Great Thou Art", and "A Mighty Fortress" Karen Olsen will be the organist. The honorary casketbearers are Bill Wiest, the Canby Area Shriners, the Canby V.F.W., the St. Leo American Legion Post and all of Ed?s friends.    The casketbearers will be David Cole, LeRoy Frank, Richard Grondahl, George Sorenson, Roger Wollum and Courtney Ramlo.
   Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday at the Birk Funeral Home in Canby and also at the church on Thursday one hour prior to the services. Military Honors will be provided by the Clark Hanson V.F.W. Post # 117 and the St. Leo American Post #524
   He died on Monday, Dec. 27, at Franklin Health Care Center in Franklin, Minnesota.
   Edmonde Kenneth Evanson was born on Oct. 24, 1916, at Fergus Falls, MN to parents Edwin and Carrie (Bondy) Evanson.  He graduated from Battle Lake High School in 1932 and Concordia College of Moorhead, MN in 1936. He attended the University of Minnesota for one year. Upon coming to Canby in 1939, Ed worked for the Canby News.    He served in the Army Air Force in the Asiatic Pacific Theatre from 1942-1945 when he was honorably discharged.    He and Ruby Grondahl were married on May 4, 1947 in Canby. He served as Postmaster from 1956-1980.  When he retired he and Ruby spent many winters in McAllen, TX and Tucson, AZ.
Ed was active in Our Saviour?s Lutheran  Church, the Canby Area Shrine Club and the Shriner?s Van Club.  He was a member of the Clark Hanson V.F.W. Post # 117 and the St. Leo American Legion Post # 524, the Last Man?s Club and the Sons of Norway.  He enjoyed playing cards, crossword puzzles, working in his garden and tending his lawn.    He enjoyed having coffee with his friends at Larry?s Drug Store.
Ed is survived by his wife, Ruby, two sons, Paul of Minneota, David of Porter, one daughter, Jeanne of Canby, one granddaughter, Elena Evanson and one great grandson Trevor.
   He was preceded in death by his parents, one daughter, Ruth Ellen, and one sister, Margery Smyithe.

Donald Evjen
   Funeral services for Donald Evjen, 54, of Indianapolis, who died Dec. 7, at his home in Indianapolis, were held Dec. 9, 2004.
   Donald was born May 2, 1950. He grew up on a farm near Porter. He was baptized and confirmed in Bethel Lutheran Church, Porter. He graduated from Canby High School in 1968.
  He is survived by his four daughters: Dawn, Kelly, Kimberly and Jessica, five grand children; his mother, Helga Evjen of Canby and two brothers Paul and Richard and a sister Kathy.
  He was preceded in death by his father, Palmer Evjen and a brother Bill.

Ethel L. Feuerhelm

   Funeral services for Ethel L. Feuerhelm, 99, of Madison, formerly of Canby, will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 21, at the Madison Lutheran Home, with Pastor Dan Billings officiating.  Burial will be in the Trent Cemetery in Trent, S.D.
   Dean Dallman will be the soloist, singing "When The Roll Is Called Up Yonder" and "In The Sweet By And By".  Eunice Hegg will be the organist, with the congregation singing "Precious Lord, Take My Hand".  The honorary casketbearers will be all of Ethel's grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.  The active casketbearers will be Rick Feuerhelm, Brian Feuerhelm, Travis Feuerhelm, Mike Johnson, Dan Feuerhelm, and Ron Feuerhelm.
   Visitation will be held from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday at the Birk Funeral Home in Canby and will continue on Monday, one hour prior to services.
   Mrs. Feuerhelm died on Thursday, Feb. 17, at the Madison Lutheran Home.
   Ethel Lavina (Fulton) Feuerhelm was born on August 10, 1905 in Polo, Illinois, to parents John and Ida Fulton.  She grew up in Trent, South Dakota, and attended grade school there.  She was married to Merritt Feuerhelm on February 15, 1928 in Pipestone, Minnesota. They farmed for 42 years near Pipestone and Canby, Minnesota.  After retirement they made their home in Canby until 1994, when they moved to the Park Avenue Apartments in Madison, Minnesota.
   Ethel was a homemaker and farmer, helping in the fields while living at home.  After she married, she helped with all of the chores on the farm.  Ethel's love on the farm was taking care of the chickens.  She enjoyed being outdoors, gardening, fishing, and life in general.  Since moving to Madison, Ethel acquired a love of music.  She looked forward to the many dances at Park Avenue and Circle B.
   She is survived by her children:  Leonard (and wife, Lois) of Vienna, SD,  Thomas (and wife, Barbara) of Madison, and JoLana (and husband, Dr. Gerald) Ehli of Aberdeen, S.D.;  15 grandchildren;  26 great-grandchildren;  and five great-grandchildren.
   She was preceded in death by her parents;  her husband, Merritt;  twin sons in infancy;  son, Mike and daughter-in-law, Nita Feuerhelm;  son-in-law, Harvey Hendrickson;  two grandchildren;  and her brothers and sisters.

John Michael Fitzpatrick
   John Michael Fitzpatrick, 93, of Canby passed away Sunday, July 24, 2005 at the Prairie Lakes Hospital in Watertown, S.D. 
Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday, July 28 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Gary, S.D., with  Monsignor Steve Barnett officiating. 
   Visitation will be Wednesday, July 27 from 2-4 p.m. at Birk Funeral Home in Canby with a Wake Service at 7 p.m. St. Peter's Catholic Church in Gary.  Visitation will continue for one hour prior to services at the church on Thursday.
Burial will be at the Grandview Cemetery in Gary.
   John Michael Fitzpatrick was born on Oct. 25, 1911, in Manfred Township to Patrick and Mary (Maher) Fitzpatrick. On Jan. 24, 1943, he was united in marriage to Margaret Johnson at St. Peter's Parsonage in Canby.  He was a man of the land and spent his entire life as a farmer.
   He was a lifelong hunter and fisherman. He was an avid reader and enjoyed gardening, listening to music, and watching baseball games. The greatest joy of his life was his grandchildren. 
   He is survived by his son, Lyndon (Denise) Fitzpatrick of Marietta; daughter Sheryl (John) Annett of Watertown, S.D.; his grandchildren: Erin, Holly, and Megan Fitzpatrick; and Maureen, Patrick, and Sean Annett.
   He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret, his son Shannon, his parents and four brothers: Thomas, Joseph, Martin, and James.

Virginia Flicek
 
   Mass of Christian Burial for Mrs. Virginia (Boler) Flicek, age 77, of Gary, S.D., will be on Saturday, Feb. 4, 2006, at 11:30 a.m. in the St. Peter's Catholic Church, Gary.  Father Brian Simon will celebrate. Music will be provided by Dorothy Sander, organist. Virginia died peacefully on Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2006, in the Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls.
   Burial will be in the Grandview Cemetery in Gary. Active pallbearers will be Virginia's grandsons: Matthew Flicek, Nicholas Flicek, D.J. Berke, Stephen Flicek, Robert Flicek, James Flicek, Grant Flicek, and Cole Flicek. Honorary pallbearers will be her granddaughters: Meghan Flicek, Katie Peterson, and Kristie Peterson.
   Visitation will be Friday, Feb. 3, 2006 at St. Peter's Catholic Church, Gary, from 5-7 p.m. with a prayer service at 7 p.m. followed by a Rosary. Houseman-Eng Funeral Home in Clear Lake, SD is in charge of the arrangements.
   Virginia was born on Feb. 9, 1928, in Rochester, to John and Gertrude (Spencer) Boler. She graduated from Lourdes High School, Rochester, in 1946. Virginia attended Rochester Junior College. She worked at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester for four and one-half years.
   On April 7, 1951, Virginia was united in marriage to Robert Flicek at St. Francis Catholic Church in Rochester and to this union seven children were born. They raised their family in Sioux Falls until 1988 when Robert retired and they moved to Lake Cochrane near Gary.
   While living in Sioux Falls, Virginia was active in St. Mary's Catholic Church Alter Society and was on the Parish and School Council. After moving to Gary, she was active in their church Alter Society and also served as Eucharistic Minister. Virginia lived for her faith, family, and friends and received much comfort by giving to others. She also loved spending time with her grandchildren, gardening, and keeping in close touch with her loved ones through numerous handwritten cards. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt and friend who will be deeply missed.
   She is survived by her husband, Robert; seven children:  Joseph (Melinda) Flicek, New York, N.Y.; Michael (Marci) Flicek, Casper, Wyo.; Thomas Flicek, Sioux Falls; Colleen (Wayne) Peterson, Rice; James (Cathy) Flicek, Sioux Falls; David (June) Flicek, Sioux Falls; Theresa (Rob) Teigen, Sioux Falls; 11 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; four brothers:  John (Elizabeth) Boler, Rochester; Joseph Boler, St. Paul; James (Patricia) Boler, Potomac, Md.; Frank Boler, Kansas City, Mo.; one sister, Sister Margaret Boler OSF, Baltimore, Md.; and 29 nieces and nephews.
   Virginia was preceded in death by her parents, John and Gertrude (Spencer) Boler and brother, Paul Boler.

Harriet Frank

   Harriet Frank, age 89, of Marshall, died on Sunday, Jan. 23, 2005 at the Minneota Manor.
   Funeral services will be 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 29, at First Lutheran Church in Marshall.
   Burial will be in the Marshall Cemetery.
   Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. with a 7 p.m. prayer service on Friday at the Hamilton Funeral Home. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church.
   Harriet Katherine Hagen was born to Henry and Caroline (Bye) Hagen on May 27, 1915 in Hanley Falls. She was baptized and later confirmed in the Lutheran faith in Leonard, MN. She graduated from Hanley Falls School in 1933.
   In December 1933, Harriet was united in marriage to John "Jack" Frank. After the couple's marriage, they lived in Canby, Clear Lake, SD, moved back to Canby, and then to Marshall in 1954. She worked as a bookkeeper at Addison Hardware and Runnings, then as a nurses aid at Weiner Memorial Nursing Home. Jack passed away on June 10, 1993.
   Harriet passed away on Sunday, January 23, 2005 at the Minneota Manor. She had reached the age of 89 years, 7 months and 26 days.
   Her greatest delight was her family. She is survived by her daughter, JoAnn (and John) Jones, of Northfield; two sisters, Helma Thorson and Myrtle Erickson-Portz, both of Clearbrook, MN; five grandchildren, Jesse Flaschenriem, Jeffrey (and Mary) Jones, Joy Mercie, Jonica (and John) Lozano and Jay (and Elizabeth) Jones; ten great-grandchildren, Michael, Brian, Andrew, Blake, Chad, Jeremy, Nathan, Michaela, Natasha and Hannah; and five great-great-grandchildren, Ryan, Noah, Cole, Kaleb and Evan.
   She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and grandson-in-law, Jerry Mercie.
   Harriet's enjoyments in life included traveling, camping, baseball (The Twins), sewing (embroidery) and reading.
 She was a faithful member of First Lutheran Church, ELCW Quilting Circle, and the Sons of Norway.

Nels Fodness

   Funeral Service for Nels Fodness, 93, of Minneota, will be at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 13, at Hope Lutheran Church in Minneota.    Visitation will be from 4 p.m. ­ 8 p.m. on Sunday with a prayer service at 6 p.m. and one hour prior to the service on Monday all at Hope Lutheran Church in Minneota.
   Burial will follow the service at Hope Lutheran Cemetery in Minneota.
   Nels Fodness was born on June 18, 1912, to Sigurd and Bessie (Myhre) Fodness in Lyon County, Nordland Township, Minneota. He died on Sunday, Feb. 5, 2006, at the Sioux Valley Hospital in Sioux Falls. He was baptized and confirmed at Hope Lutheran Church and was a life long member there. He attended District 77 Country School and Minneota High School. On Aug. 28, 1967, he was united in marriage to Luciell Keller Myhre at Hope Church. Luciell died on July 16, 1973. Nels and Luciell were caregivers to Nels' parents on the farm. Nels moved to the Madison Ave. Apartments in 2002. For the last 11 months, he has been living at the Minneota Manor Healthcare Center.
   He enjoyed farming and farmed most of his life. He also enjoyed music, dancing and playing the organ and accordion.
   He is survived by his sister Irene Neiman of Springfield, nephews Eugene (Barbara) Fodness of Minneota, David (Lyn) Neiman of Sioux Falls, step-daughter Delorise (Edward) McGee of Aledo, Texas, one great nephew, three great-nieces, one great-great niece, three step-great grandchildren and many relatives and friends.
   He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Luciell, sister Sharlotte and brother-in-law Bill Neiman.

Virgil Gislason

   Virgil Voltaire Gislason was born April 3, 1930, in Minneota, the son of V.V. and Mary Helen Gislason. He was baptized and confirmed as St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Minneota. He graduated from Minneota High School in 1949 and attended Mankato State College where he played basketball.
   After his college days he moved to San Francisco where he worked as an expiditer for United Airlines. There he met his future wife, Marney Clapp. They were married in Minneota on May 7, 1960. Following their marriage, Virgil "Big Gis" worked in the family business, Gislason Hardware.
   In 1969, Virgil and Marney moved to Willmar to start a car wash business. His brother, Walter, joined him as partner in 1971 and the next year, they expanded the business to Alexandria. Virgil remained in Alexandria until returning to Gislason Hardware in Minneota in 1976.
   He continued to serve the Minneota community until his retirement. Virgil and Marney both enjoyed golfing and having coffee with customers and friends. They also loved their dogs.
   Virgil died Monday, April 11, 2005, at the Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, S.D. He is survived by his wife, Marney, two children, Barbara Rye and special friend Dave Fahey of Cottonwood, and Brian Gislason and his wife Nicole of Park River, N.D., and four grandchildren, Michael and Jennifer Rye, and Patricia and Kasey Gislason. Also surviving are one brother, Walter (and Raeanna) Gislason of Willmar and one sister, Peg (and Merle) Kvilhaug of Mesa, Ariz., and two half sisters, Donna Mae Matthews of Fridley and Marilyn Goodsell of Minnetonka, plus several nieces and nephews.
   He was preceded in death by his parents.

Mary Graner

   Mass of Christian Burial for Mary Graner, 92, of Canby will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, April 18, at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Canby, with Father Tony Hesse officiating. Burial will be in St. Peter's Catholic Cemetery.
   Phyllis Vlaminck will be the organist, with Jean Kockelman as song leader. There will also be special music by Jordan Differding. The giftbearers will be Monica Grengs and Christa Wilson.  Placing the funeral pall will be Mary's granddaughters:  Missy Graner, Julie Graner, Kathy Colin, and Mary McIntosh.  The casketbearers will be Jim Graner, Larry Graner, Ken Graner, James Graner, Brent Graner, Rhys Jones, and Kathy Colin.
   Visitation will be held from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Sunday at the Birk Funeral Home in Canby, with a parish wake service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue at the church on Monday, one hour prior to Mass.
   Mary died on Thursday, April 14, at her home of 65 years, under the loving care of Hospice and two of her children, Alice Mae and Ken.
   She was born on Jan. 23, 1913, in Alton, Iowa, to parents John G. and Katherine (Meyers) Differding. She was baptized at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Alton. At a young age Mary moved with her family to a farm near St. Leo, Minnesota. She received the sacraments of First Holy Communion and Confirmation at St. Leo Catholic Church, where she also attended parochial school.
   On Sept. 4, 1934, Mary was married to Alfred Graner at St. Leo Catholic Church. They made their home in Canby, where Alfred owned and operated Graner Motors. In addition to being a homemaker and mother, Mary was an active member of St. Peter's Catholic Church, where she was also a member of the Altar Society.
   Alfred passed away in August of 1983, and Mary continued to live at home throughout the remainder of her life. Some of her enjoyments in life included spending time with her family and friends, being active in her church, crocheting, knitting, gardening, and playing Bridge and other card games.
   She is survived by her five children: Carolyn (and Dan) Colin of Kailua, Hawaii,  Alice Mae Graner of Minneapolis, James (and Judy) Graner of Minnetrista, Larry (and Dawn) Graner of Largo, Fla.,  and Ken (and Terry) Graner of Apple Valley; her grandchildren:  Missy (and Rhys Jones) Graner of Minnetrista, James (and Corinna) Graner of Corcoran, Brian (and Tirzah) Colin of Twisp, Wash., Mary (and Lance) McIntosh of Tempe, Ariz.,  Kathy Colin of San Diego, Calif.,  and Brent and Julie Graner, both of Apple Valley; and her great-grandchildren: Logan, Conner, and Hayden Graner-Jones,  Malia and Ian McIntosh, and Lily Colin.  She is also survived by two sisters: Ann (and Ben) Thielges of St. Leo, and Alice Machulda of Medina;  two brothers: Joe (and Josie) Differding of Minneota, and Alvin (and Eileen) Differding of Taunton; and by many nieces and nephews.
   She was preceded in death by her parents;  her husband, Alfred;  a sister, Frances Windey;  and two brothers:  Alphonse and John Differding.

Gerald Grengs

   Funeral services for Gerald "Gerry" Grengs, 47, of Montevideo were held Saturday, July 9, at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Montevideo with Pastor Tim Ehling officiating.  
   Burial was in the St. Leo Catholic Cemetery.  
   The casketbearers were Adam, Eric, Ryan, and Jon Grengs and Riley and Dylan Dittes.
   Grengs passed away on Monday, July 4, 2005, at the Chippewa County-Montevideo Hospital in Montevideo.  Gerald Donald Grengs was born July 16, 1957, in Marshall to Virgil and Doris (Hirschberger) Grengs. He attended St. Leo's Catholic School and Canby High School. Following high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy where he served two years before being honorably discharged.  After his military service, he went to work as a welder in Memphis, Tenn., for the next 15 years. Following his second heart attack he moved back to Minnesota and continued working as a welder in the construction business.
   He was a member of the Youth Board at Trinity Lutheran Church and enjoyed model airplanes, gardening, fishing, riding his Harley, and refurbishing houses.
   He is survived by his parents: Doris Myers and her husband John of Canby and Virgil Grengs of St. Leo; his fiance, Peggy Dittes and her children, Dylan, Riley, and Briana; his three children, Sheila, Amber, and Dustin; three grandchildren, Taylor, Tyler, and Dillon; three brothers, Mike (Jodi) Grengs of Taunton, Jeff (Sherri) Grengs of Canby, and Tom (Donna) Grengs of Taunton; step brothers and sisters, Lucy (Scott) Collins, Ruth Myers, John Jr. (Denise) Myers, Gerry (Jackie) Myers, and Grace (Jim) Snyder; and many nieces and nephews.  
   He was preceded in death by his grandparents and two uncles, Jim and Donald.

Florence Wilma Grimlie
   Funeral Services for Florence Wilma Grimlie, age 75, of Hendricks will be at 11 a.m. on Friday, July 29, in the Christ Lutheran Church, Hendricks. Rev. Duane Baun will officiate.
   Mrs. Grimlie passed away on July 25, 2005, at the Hendricks Nursing Home in Hendricks. 
   Burial will be in the Alta Vista Cemetery, Porter. Active Pallbearers will be Dan Stacken, Joel Bill, Bryan Anderson, Mark Anderson, Jeremya DesLauriers, and Zachary DesLauriers. Honorary Pallbearers will be Tracy Stacken, Tammy Bill, Jennifer Anderson, Kelly Anderson, Jahger Bill, and Jahlyn Bill.  Music will be provided by Duane Hogie. 
   Visitation will be at the Hendricks Hospital Chapel in Hendricks on Thursday from 5 to 7 p.m. with a prayer service at 6:30 p.m. and will continue Friday one hour prior to the service at the church. The Birk Funeral Home in Hendricks is in charge of the arrangements.
   Florence Rohde was born March 29, 1930, to Adolph and Alma (Flohr) Rohde in Canby. She was raised near Canby where she attended the Canby schools. She  was baptized and confirmed at Zacchaeus Lutheran Church in Canby. 
   She was united in marriage to Henry Goslar on Feb. 14, 1948, at Zacchaeus Lutheran Church in Canby. Following their marriage, they made their home near Canby.  They moved into Porter in 1967. Henry passed away on April 3, 1972.  Florence remained in Porter until her marriage to Maurice Grimlie on Feb. 18, 1978, at the Bethel Lutheran Church in Porter. Following their marriage they lived on a farm near Hendricks. Maurice passed away on Sept. 24, 1989. Florence then moved into Hendricks where she was an active volunteer. She continued to live in her home in Hendricks until she entered the Hendricks nursing home on Jan. 24, 2005.
   She was a member of Christ Lutheran Church where she was active in ladies aid. She enjoyed having coffee with her friends, shopping, reading and the outdoors. She especially enjoyed spending time with her family.
   She is survived by her daughter Barb (Doug) Anderson of Porter; daughter-in- law Pat (LeRoy) Hebrank of Minneota; grandchildren, Tracy ( Dan) Stacken of Marshall and their children Jeremya DesLauriers, Zachary DesLauriers, Nathan Stacken and Ryan Stacken, Tammy (Joel) Bill of Redwood Falls and their children Jahger and Jahlyn, Jennifer (Bryan) Anderson of Brandon, S.D., Kelly Anderson of Omaha, Neb., and Mark Anderson of Porter; one sister Eleanor (Everett) Johnson of  Canby, MN; and her nieces and nephews.
   She was preceded in death by her first husband Henry Goslar; second husband Maurice Grimlie; son Larry Goslar and her parents.

Roger Allan Gubrud

   Funeral services for Roger Allan Gubrud, 65, of Canby, will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, June 30, at First United Presbyterian Church in Canby, with Rev. Daniel Billings officiating.  
   Burial will be in the Canby City Cemetery.
   Norma DeWit will be the organist, with the congregation singing "Borning Cry" and "How Great Thou Art". There will be special music by John and Nancy Lease, singing "On Eagles' Wings" and "The Lord's Prayer". Honorary pallbearers will be Barry Ufkin, Arlo Haase, Terry Yackley, Gerry Gingles, Bob Hegg, and Norris Peterson.
   Visitation will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Wednesday at the Birk Funeral Home in Canby, with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m.
   Gubrud died on Tuesday, June 21, in Hammer Township, rural Canby.
   He was born Dec. 31, 1939, in Canby to Art and Luella (Ochsendorf) Gubrud. He was baptized and confirmed at Nicolai Lutheran Church and attended Canby Public Schools, graduating with the Class of 1958. He went on to attend South Dakota State University, and graduated in 1965.
   On Sept. 2, 1961, Roger was married to Patricia Nevins at First Presbyterian Church in Canby. He went to work for Ralston-Purina in Fort Dodge, Iowa and Rice Lake, Wis., from 1965 until 1971. In 1971 he and his brother, Orval, purchased Tri-County Feed in Canby. After they sold the business in 1984 Roger farmed for a few years and also worked with his brother-in-law, Rollie Nevins. For the past few years he had worked as a Crop Insurance Adjuster.
   He was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Canby, where he served several terms as an Elder. He also served on the church's finance committee, where he initiated the Endowment Fund. He was a longtime member of the Canby Sportsman's Club, and was a volunteer for the local Meals On Wheels program.
   He had a love of the outdoors, and he enjoyed many hours spent hunting and fishing with his family and friends. He also enjoyed the summers spent at his lake home on Star Lake, and he was especially fond of his dogs.
   He is survived by his wife, Patricia; his sons: Jon (and Darcy) of Willmar, and Wade (and Jane) of Lake Cochrane, S.D.; his special and beloved grandchildren, Kathryn and Grant; his brothers: Duane (and Mary Lee) of Henning, and Orval (and Muriel) of Canby; his sisters: Virginia (and Arne) Holmes of Long Lake, Mary Lou of Battle Lake,  and Carol of Bloomington; his mother-in-law, EmMilie Nevins of Canby; and by many nieces and nephews.  
   He was preceded in death by his parents.

Leona Gudmandson

   Services will be held for Leona E. Gudmundson, 84, of Canby at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday March 29 at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Canby with Pastor Katherine Rood officiating.  
   Burial will be in the Canby City Cemetery. The congregation will sing "What a Friend We have in Jesus" and "How Great Thou Art". Bruce Melby will sing "On Eagles' Wings" and "Precious Lord Take My Hand". Karen Olsen will be the organist. The casketbearers will be Dave Kuusisto, Greg Kloos, Matt Kloos, Matt Olson, Kyle Lindgren, and Brad Reipke. Visitation will be at the church on Tuesday one hour prior to the services. Mrs. Gudmundson died on Friday at the Senior Haven Nursing Home in Canby.
   Leona Eldora Anderson ws born on July 11, 1920, at Canby, minnesota to parents Nels and Emma (Roehrdanz) Anderson. She was a lifelong resident of the Canby Community.  She and Waldo Gudmundson were married on Feb. 25, 1942, in Denver, CO. She was a member of Our Saviour?s Lutheran Church and the W.E.L.C.A. Leona worked as a secretary for over 42 years. She worked for Southwest Insurance Services, retiring in 1982. She and Waldo were active in the Canby Shrine Club and Leona was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star.
   Leona is survived by her son, Roger (and wife Patti) of Ramsey, three granddaughters, Rachel, Jill and Kelly and one great grandson, Christian Alan Lindgren. She is also survived by her brother, Glen (and his wife Anita) Anderson of Arizona.
   She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Waldo two brothers Vernon and Wayne and one sister, LaVerna Knutson.

Hazel Hagebak
   Hazel Virginia Hagebak, 91, of Hastings and formerly of Canby, passed away peacefully on March 25, 2006 at the Regina Medical Center in Hastings.
   She was born Oct. 22, 1914, in Nassau to Henry and Hannah Nelson. She married Vernald Hagebak on May 4, 1939.
She was a long-time member of Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Canby and Sons of Norway in Madison and enjoyed quilting, cooking, cards, crocheting, gardening and spending time with her family and many friends.
   She will be sadly missed by her daughters, Virginia (Russel) Syltie of Hastings, Katherine (William) Wold of McCormick, S.C., and Barbara (Herb) Larsen of Emmett, Idaho, and grandchildren Andrea Wallace, Jennifer Syltie (Tom) Johnson, Steven (Becky) Syltie, Kari (Dennis) DeWeerd, Scott (Carol) Wold, Kirsta (Medric) Bradley, Jon (Kristy) Hanson, Brent (Stacy) Hanson and sixteen great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister, Myrtle Manning of Portland, Ore., sisters-in-law, Judith Liden of Seattle, Wash., Iola Nelson of Marietta, and Carol Olson of Madison.
   She was preceded in death by her husband, Vernald Hagebak, granddaughter Kirsten Wold, brothers Oliver (Rueben) Nelson, Kenneth Nelson, Rose Rabenstein, Cora Kanthak, Pearl Bunting and Olive Anderson.
   Services will be held at Faith Lutheran Church in Madison on Tuesday, April 4 at noon with visitation one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in the Madison Cemetery.

Roy G. Halstenson

   Roy G. Halstenson, 92, of Canby passed away Wednesday, Nov. 16, 2005, at the Sioux Valley Canby Campus Hospital.
Funeral Services will be held Saturday, Nov. 19 at 1:30 p.m. at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Canby with Rev. Katherine Rood officiating.
   Visitation will be Friday, Nov. 18 from 4-7 p.m. with a prayer service at 6:30 p.m. at Birk Funeral Home in Canby.
   Visitation will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Saturday.
   Burial will be at the Canby City Cemetery.
   Roy G. Halstenson was born on Jan. 24, 1913, in Yellow Medicine County, Florida Township, to Melvin and Anne (Wicks) Halstenson. Roy was born and raised on the family farm and farming was his life time occupation. Roy served with the Conservation Corps in 1934 and 1935. On Sept. 8, 1938, Roy married Catherine Cole in Milbank, S.D., and to this union four children were added.
Roy enjoyed attending farm auctions and watching stock car races. He especially enjoyed the Big Band Era of the 30's and 40's, dancing, and the Lawrence Welk Show and he loved spending time with his family.
   Roy is survived by his son, Jerry (Paula) Halstenson of Sheldon, Iowa; three daughters, Gail (Dick) DeBettignies of Apple Valley, Marvel Evenson of Burnsville, Nancy (Mike) Anderson of Mukwonago, Wis.; 14 grandchildren, Brett (Kim) Sanders, Jeff Sanders, Nancy Bumby, Lori (Darin) Granstra, Amy Halstenson, Cathy Nyseth, John (Angie) DeBettignies, David (Nicole) DeBettignies, Stacey (Bill) Dorsey, Jennifer (Clint) Swenson, Derek Evenson, Julie (John) McCarthy, Thomas (Stephanie) Anderson, Curtis (Angela) Anderson; 23 great-grandchildren; several nieces; nephews; and friends.
   Roy was preceded in death by his wife, Catherine; parents; sister, Helen; and grandson, Doug.

Donald D. Hanson

   Donald D. Hanson was born April 21, 1933 in Canby and died Aug. 31, 2005, in the arms of his family, in Annapolis, MD of biliary cancer due to hemochromatosis.
   He was preceeded in death by his parents, George A. and Dorothy (Billington) Hanson, brother George (Sonny) and in-laws Robert and Goldie (Mead) Bresson.
   He graduated from Canby High School in 1951, enrolled at Macalaster College and graduated with honors from the University of Minnesota attaining a Bachelor of Architecture 1956, a Master of Architecture at Massachusetts Institute of Technology 1957, a Fulbright Scholarship to the University of Copenhagen 1957-58, and an Honorary PhD. from the University of Central America, Nicaragua 1976.
   Hanson was an extraordinary teacher and educator. He was head of the School of Architecture at the University of Illinois-Chicago 1964 -1973, Dean of the School of Architecture at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville 1973-1980. He returned to Minnesota to live in Afton as the seniorvice president and studio leader for Ellerbe Architects.
   Local projects included Mayo Clinic Master Plan 2020 and Mayo Civic Center. In 1985, he moved to Florida as a successful consultant working on numerous projects throughout the country and across the globe.
   Survived by childhood sweetheart and beloved wife of 52 years, Shirley, of Jacksonville, Fla., daughter, Kirsten Hanson (Alberto Gonzalez) and their children, Alsten and Kaitlen, of Woodbury, son, Erik (Cheryl) Hanson and their sons, Dane, Kai and Finn, of Cambridge, Mass., sister, Dorothy (Robert) Boen, and her son, James (Sue) Bloyer, of Minneapolis.
   Although his work sent him around the world, he always considered Canby his home, and its people his family. A memorial will be held Saturday, Nov. 12, at 1 p.m., at Memorial Lutheran Church, Afton. In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred to your local Hospice.

Clifford Hanson

   Clifford Laverne Hanson, 75, of Luverne passed away Friday, August 12, 2005, at the Veterans Nursing Home in Luverne. 
Funeral Services will be held Friday, Aug. 19 at 11 a.m. at the Birk Funeral Home in Canby with Rev. Katherine Rood officiating. 
   Visitation will be one hour prior to the services on Friday.  Burial will be at the St. Stephen's Cemetery in Canby.
   Clifford Laverne Hanson was born on April 25, 1930, at Canby Hospital to Christ and Sadie (Nelson) Hanson. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Stephen's Lutheran Church in Canby.  He attended country school and then Canby High School. He enlisted in the Navy in 1950 and served in the Korean War then spent a tour of duty on the USS Wasp, an aircraft carrier.
   On Sept. 9, 1951, he married Marilyn Gjovig. He farmed his whole life and enjoyed raising his kids, fishing, playing cards and traveling.
   He is survived by his five children, Steve (Sharon) Hanson of Litchfield, Kathy (Kim) Larson of Fargo, N.D., Todd Hanson of Detroit Lakes, Tom (Cathy) Hanson of Erie, Penn., Susan (Loren) Van Watermuelen of Grantsburg, Wis., nine grandchildren Cody & Caitlin Hanson, Stephanie & Jacob Larson, Jennifer, Jeffrey, & Jason Hanson, Justin & Jared Van Watermeulen, and two sisters, Amy Trinka and Alice Johnson. 
   He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Muriel Hanson and Eleanor Hanson, and one brother Milton Hanson.

Irene Hartfiel

   Services for Irene L. Hartfiel, 83, Hutchinson, were held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, Feb. 28, 2005, at Peace Lutheran Church in Hutchinson.    She died Feb. 23 at North Memorial Medical Center in Robbinsdale. Pastor Gerhard Bode officiated.
   Paul Otte was organist and soloist. He sang "Borning Cry" and "How Great Thou Art". The congregation sang "Children of The Heavenly Father" and "I'm But a Stranger Here."
   Honorary casket bearer was Kevin Roggatz. Casket bearers were Ron Hartfiel, Dan Haaland, Wayne Heise, Larry Heise, Nick Golden and Ron Huseby. Inter-ment was in Terrace Lawn Memory Gardens in Montevideo.
   Irene Louise Hartfiel was born Sept. 17, 1921 in Canby to Emil and Caroline (Sillman) Heise. She was baptized on Oct. 10, 1921 by Rev. Jank at Nicolai Lutheran Church in Oshkosh Township and later confirmed in 1935 by Rev. Henning at Zachaeus Lutheran Church in Canby. She received her education in Dist. 36 in Yellow Medicine County.
   On Nov. 15, 1939 she was married to Milroy Hartfiel at the Zachaeus Lutheran Church by Rev. Henning. They farmed near Clarkfield and moved to Montevideo in 1981. Milroy died in 1999.
   In addition to being a partner in the operation of the farm, Irene was a mother and home-maker. She was a member of both Peace Lutheran Church in Hutchinson and St. Paul Lutheran Church in Montevideo. She enjoyed making quilts, crocheting afghans and baking banana bread and chocolate chip cookies for her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
   She moved to Hutchinson in Sept., 2002, and became a resident of Prince of Peace Retirement Living.
   She is survived by her children: Wendell (Donna) of Bloomington and Evonne (Steve) Schramm of Hutchinson; seven grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; four step grandchildren; four great-great grandchildren; two brothers: Eldon (Alta) Canby and Nordahl (Vicky) of Florida; two sisters in law: Dorothy (Erling) Haaland of Starbuck and Norma Hartfiel of New Ulm and many nieces and nephews.
   She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband; three brothers: Alvin, Lawrence and Walter and a sister Hazel Marienau.

Sandra Lee Hauger

   Sandra Lee (Hook) Hauger, 59, of Canby, passed away Dec. 20, 2005 at Sioux Valley Canby Campus Hospital.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, Dec. 23, 2005 at 7 p.m. at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Canby, with Father Tony Hesse officiating.
   Visitation will be from 3:00 to 5:00 on Friday, Dec. 23 at Birk Funeral Home in Canby. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services at the church. A private family burial will be held.
   Sandra Lee (Hook) Hauger was born on Jan. 23, 1946 in Tracy to Percy and Violet (Gilb) Hook. She was baptized in Tracy and confirmed in Gary, SD.
   On July 11, 1964, she married Russell Hauger in Gary, S.D. To this union, three children were born. Following their marriage, they lived in Gary, then moved to Hanau, Germany and moved to Canby, where they resided since 1971.
   Sandy was a secretary at Tri-County Feeds; dietician at Canby Hospital and then owned Country Flowers and More for 15 years. She then worked six years at REM and ended her working days doing daycare for her two young grand-daughters Abbi Lynn and Autumn Joy Denekamp.
   Sandy enjoyed gardening, flowers, camping, spending time with grandkids, cleaning & organizing and making lists.
Sandy is survived by her husband, Russell of Canby; her children, Kimberly (Tim) Huber of Bushnell, S.D.; Kora (Dave, Jr) Denekamp of Canby; Kristoffer of Canby; five grandchildren, Abbi Lynn and Autumn Joy Denekamp of Canby; Dustin Jared, Cody Heath, and Bobbi Kaye Huber of Bushnell, S.D.
   She was preceded in death by her father, Percy and brother, Ronald.

LeRoy Ralph Hauschild

   LeRoy Ralph Hauschild, 75, of Ivanhoe passed away Monday, Aug. 29, 2005, at his home in Ivanhoe.
   Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, Sept. 3 at 10:30 a.m. at St. John Cantius Catholic Church in Wilno, with Father Robert Goblirsch officiating.
   Visitation will be Friday, Sept. 2 from 5-8 p.m. at Birk Funeral Home in Ivanhoe with a Wake Service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue for one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday.
   Burial will be at the St. John Cantius Cemetery in Wilno.
   LeRoy Ralph Hauschild was born May 30, 1930, in Limestone Township to Carl Sr. and Caroline (Hass) Hauschild. He was baptized at Zion Lutheran Church in Island Lake Township in Lyon County.
   On June 3, 1952, he was united in marriage to Kathryn Welu in Marshall. On March 5, 1993, he was united in marriage to Leona Citterman-Jerzak.
   He was a lifetime farmer, trucker and sold Jacques seed corn. He was a member of Lincoln County VFW Post #2980 and the Porter American Legion Post #0457. LeRoy served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War. He enjoyed farming, trucking, visiting family and friends, playing cards and going out for steak supper.
   He is survived by his wife, Leona Hauschild, four children, Richard (Laurie) Hauschild of Porter, Randy (Sussan) Hauschild of Porter, Pauline (Norm) VanOverbeke of Ivanhoe, JoAnn (Kevin) Downing of Ivanhoe, six step-children Roger (Angie) Jerzak of Ivanhoe, Alice (Mitch) Winges of Loveland, Colo., Vivan (Robert) Pavek of Ivanhoe, James (Jill) Jerzak of Ivanhoe, Kevin (Sandra) Jerzak of Marshall, David Jerzak (special friend Leigh Nelson) of Sioux Falls, S.D., 10 grandchildren, 14 step-grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, five step-great-grandchildren, one brother, Carl (Eloise) Hauschild of Minneota.
   He was preceded in death by his parents, stepfather, Alvin Thooft, infant son, Darryl Hauschild.

William (Billy) John Kelm
   William (Billy) Kelm , 46, passed away on March 4, 2006, from complications of lymphoma cancer.
   Billy was born July 12, 1959, in Granite Falls, the fifth child of Donna and the late Ordell Kelm. Billy was a special spirit born with a disability that taught all who knew him to love him. Billy spent his first eight years with his family. Billy loved the simple things in his life like flipping Frisbees and watching them spin, being outdoors in the sunshine to take walks, looking at the bike wheels spin in the sunshine and he loved to go out for a ice cream shakes.
   Billy is survived by his mother Donna Kelm of St. George, Utah, one brother, Rick(Tess)Kelm of Appleton, and sisters, Rosellen Kelm of White Salmon, Wash., Patty Kaufman (Jack) of Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., Janice (Jerry) Skeans of Nappanee, Ind., Linda (Rob)Robertson, Tina Kelm(Larry Jarrett),of Salt Lake City, Uttah, Laurie (Kirk)Harris of North Logan, Utah, Cindy (Gary)Freudenberg of Lake Forest, Calif., Angela (Byron) Parker of Bend, Ore., and many nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his father Ordell Kelm and sister Heidi Jo Kelm.
   Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, March 8, 2006 at 1:30 p.m. in Granite Falls at the Wing-Bain Funeral Home.
He will be buried near his father in the Granite Falls cemetery.

Jay Daniel Hansen

   Jay Daniel Hansen, age 13, of Canby, died peacefully at his home May 5, 2006 after a long valiant battle with cancer.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, May 9, at 2 p.m. at the Canby High School Gymnasium. Visitation will be held on Monday from 5-8 PM at Birk Funeral Home in Canby. Visitation will also be held one hour prior to the service at the Canby High School Gymnasium. Rev. Bruce Mueller of First Lutheran Church of Gary, S.D., will officiate. Burial will be in Nicolai Lutheran Cemetery.
   Jay was born on March 11, 1993 at Weiner Memorial Hospital in Marshall to Daniel and Becky (Gackstetter) Hansen. He was baptized at Nicolai Lutheran Church of Canby. Jay was currently in the seventh grade at Canby High School. He loved campfires, reading, video games and collecting swords and knives. He earned his junior black belt in Tae Kwon Do. Jay was a big Minnesota Vikings, Star Wars and Harry Potter fan. He loved spending time with family, friends, classmates, his teachers, his dog-Ricochet and his cat-Spritz.
   Jay is survived by his mother, Becky Hansen and sister, Lora Hansen both of Canby; grandparents, Richard and Daisy Hansen of Canby and Jim and Jackie Gackstetter of Marshall; great grandparents, Howard and Bonnie Gackstetter of Marshall; two uncles, Wayne (Myra) Hansen of St. Cloud and Mark Hansen of Canby; aunt, Michelle (Shannon) Markegard and children, Rhiannon and Skylar of Lynd; special friends, Brad Thomas of Toronto, S.D.; Jason (Joy) Carstens and children, Brady and Riley of Canby; Roger (Nancy) Longhenry and children, Travis and Billy of Porter.
   He was preceded in death by his father, Daniel Hansen.

Dorothy Hennings

   Funeral services for Dorothy Hennings, 91, of Revillo, S.D. who passed away Wednesday, March 9, 2005 at Prairie Lakes Hospital, Watertown, S.D. were held on Monday, March 14 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Revillo, S.D. Rev. Kim Kanitz officiated with interment at Augusta Lutheran Cemetery, Marietta. Carol Street was organist and Dennis Hoyles vocalist.
   Dorothy Hannah Margaretta Hennings was born December 11, 1913, in Lac qui Parle County, MN to John and Selma (Bolden) Peiker. She grew up and attended schools in the Gary, Marietta and Revillo areas.
   She was united in marriage on September 8, 1934 to Fred H. Hennings. The couple purchased a farm in the Revillo, S.D. area in 1943, after her husbands death, Hennings continued to live on the farm until 1979 when she moved to Revillo, S.D.
   Hennings was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Revillo, and the Senior Citizens.
   She enjoyed farming, dancing, auction sales, traveling, canning, visiting, and cooking. She had a great appreciation for trees, flower gardens and birds.
   Hennings is survived by two daughters, Marlys (Vincent) Swenson, Clear Lake, S. D. and Norma (John) Ahartz, Seattle, Washington; one son, Larry (Ina) Hennings, Revillo, S.D.; 10 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren; one sister, Katherine Hersom, Dawson; two sisters-in-law, Ella Peiker, Milbank and Bernice Hennings, Madison, and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, two brothers, Levi and Elgie Peiker, and one sister, Lucille Butzin.

Loretta C. Hentges

   Funeral services for Loretta C. Hentges, 73, of Gary, S.D. who passed away Saturday, March 5, 2005 at Watertown, S.D. were held on Thursday, March 10, 2005 at the United Methodist Church, Gary, S.D. Rev. Samuel Sunandkumar officiated. Dorothy Sanders was organist and Bruce Melby was soloist. Interment was at Grandview Cemetery, Gary, S.D.
   Loretta C. Hentges, was born to Clarence and Lola (Rasmussen) Olufson on February 23, 1932 at Canby. She was raised on a farm near Canby and attended country school and then high school in Canby.
   She was united in marriage on April 15, 1951 to John W. "Jack" Hentges in the Florida Lutheran Church, rural Canby. The couple moved to Gary, S. D. in 1951. She enjoyed being a homemaker, sewing, crafts, antique furniture, decorating and shopping.
   Survivors include her husband; three daughters, Sherry (Kenny) Hemmingson, Marietta, Vickie (Gerry) Kiley, Minneota, Debbie (Jay Blum) Kloos, Gary, S.D.; one son, Michael Hentges, Gary, S.D.; nine grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.
   She was preceded in death by her parents, one daughter, Holly Ann Hentges; one grandson, Kurt Hemmingson; and three aunts, Doris Paulson, Marion Reynolds and Pearl Mohn.

Hugo Hillman

   Hugo Hillman, 83, of Battle Lake died Tuesday, Aug. 2, 2005, at his home.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Aug. 5, at First Lutheran Church in Battle Lake. Burial will be at Skiptvedt Cemetery, rural Battle Lake
   Hillman was born Dec. 17, 1921, in Marietta to Carl and Bertha (Lau) Hillman. He was baptized April 30, 1922, by Rev. Dachsteiner and confirmed May 12, 1935, by Rev. Striepe in Nassau. He graduated from Canby High School in 1939 and Nettleton Business College at Sioux Falls, S.D., in 1940. From 1944 to 1946 he served with the U.S. Marine Corps during WWII and was in the Battle of Saipan and the Occupation Force in Japan. He was one of the first Americans to enter Nagasaki after the atomic bomb was detonated in August of 1945.
   On Aug. 10, 1948, he married Margie Helmbolt in Canby. He worked as a bookkeeper for the Canby Hatchery and Canby Veterinarian and also as Deputy Registrar for the State of Minnesota until his retirement in 1988.
   He was a very active member of the Zacchaeus Lutheran Church, which became Our Saviors Lutheran, in Canby where he was an usher for many years and served as treasurer and president of the church council. He was currently a member of First Lutheran Church in Battle Lake. He was a member of the Canby School Board for 12 years and a member of the Deputy Registrar's Association. He was a life member of the American Legion and VFW in Canby for the past 57 years and had been past Post Commander and Adjutant for Post 103. He was also a member of the Legion Drill Team and Color Squad for 41 years. He enjoyed fishing, gardening, dancing and spending time with his family and many friends.
   He is survived by his wife, Margie; sons, Darwin (Laurie) Hillman of Battle Lake and Donlon (Cindy) Hillman of Fargo, ND; daughter, Connie (John) Scheevel of Spicer; 10 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren and a sister, Lyla (Winfred) Schmidt of Marietta, MN. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Roland, Chester and Irvin; sisters, Louise Hillman, Irma Sandau, Viola Limberg, Louise Anderson and Alvera Schmidt.

Arnold E. Hofland, Sr.

   Funeral services forArnold E. Hofland, Sr., 88, of Clear Lake, S.D., who passed on January 13, 2005 at the Hendricks Hospital in Hendricks were held on Tuesday, January 18, 2005 at the Leganger Lutheran Church, Toronto, S.D. Rev. James Thvedt officiated. Interment was at the Mikkelson Cemetery, rural Toronto, S.D.
   Pallbearers were Stacey Hofland, Seth Hofland, Michael Victor, Mark Victor, Michael Vaughn, John Heideman and Eric Wilson. Honory pallbearers were all of his grandchildren. Jan Roelofsen was the organist.
   Arnold Hofland was born August 30, 1916 to Christ and Jorgina (Siem) Hofland in Deuel County, S.D. where he was raised and attended country school. Following his education he worked as a mechanic for an implement dealer.
   On April 16, 1936 Hofland was united in marriage to Gladys Falken. Following thier marriage they lived in Toronto, S.D. where he continued to work as a mechanic. In 1953 they moved to his father's farm near Canby. After farming he worked at various jobs in Estelline and Watertown, S.D. until 1975, when they moved to Alaska and he worked for ERA Helicopters until his retirement in 1987. They then moved to an acreage south of Clear Lake, S.D. where they lived until he entered th eDeuel County Good Samaritan Center in Clear Lake, S.D. in 2003.
   Hofland was a member of the Leganger Lutheran CHurch, Toronto. He enjoyed gardening, raising calves and fishing.
Hofland is survived by his wife; his six children, Marjorie Victor, Canby, Janice (Ron) Wilson, Hot Springs, SD, Arnold Hofland, Jr., Clear Laked, SD, Alice (Bill) Vaughn, Eveleth, Lorraine (Ben) Heidiman, Piedmont, SD and Don (Carol) Hofland, Altamont, SD; 24 grandchildren; 48 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; one sister, Ione thune, Hemet, CA; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Joyce Quijano; an infant daughter; son, Don Hofland; an infant great grandchild; three brothes and five sisters.

Robert C. Holmlund
   Funeral services for Robert C. Holmlund, 87, of Elkton, S.D., were held on Tuesday, February 8, 2005 at United Parish, Elkton, S.D.; Rev. Daren Junker officiated. Interment was at the Canby City Cemetery, Canby.
   Holmlund passed away Friday, February 4, 2005 at Avera McKennan Hospital, Sioux Falls, S.D.
   Robert Holmlund was born on June 7, 1917 at Hendricks, MN to Martin and Clara (Skjonsby) Holmlund. His family later moved to Canby where he received his education in the country school. He worked as a farm hand and then enlisted in the Marine Corp in 1942 and was an Aviation Machinist. He served in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater and took part in the Marshall Islands Operation.
   He was united in marriage to Virginia Gudmundson on June 1, 1945 in Canby. He was stationed at El Centro, CA, until his honorable discharge on October 18, 1945.
They returned to Canby, where he was involved with police work and later went to work for Otter Tail Power Company. Holmlund was transferred to Elkton, S.D. in 1952 where he was a Service Representative until retiring in 1980.
   The Holmlund's had eight foster children and foreign exchange students live with them over the years.
   Holmlund was a member of United Church of Elkton where he was on the chuch board; a memberof the Elkton American Legion and served on many other community groups.
Holmlund is survived by his wife; one brother, Merton (Betty) of Davenport, IA; two sisters, Irene (Bernard) Madsen, Canby; and Ardis Heskett, Of Davenport, IA.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Clifford.

Lucille Hoseck

   Lucille Hoseck, 91, of Red Wing, formerly of Canby, passed away Oct. 12, 2005, at Regina Medical Center in Hastings.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, Oct. 15, at 1 p.m. at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Canby with Rev. Katherine Rood officiating.
   Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church on Saturday. Burial will be at the St. Stephen's Cemetery in Canby. Birk Funeral Home of Canby is in charge of arrangements.
   Agnes Lucille Hoseck was born Sept. 14, 1914, in Hendricks to Peter and Ella (Skjonsby) Holmlund. She was baptized in Hendricks and was confirmed at St. Stephen's Lutheran Church in Canby.
   Lucille attended Canby High School. On Sept. 7, 1940, she married Waldemar Hoseck at St. Stephen's Lutheran Church in Canby. She was a lifetime member of St. Stephen's Lutheran Church and Our Saviour's Lutheran Church of Canby.
   She was a member of Our Saviour's Lutheran Ladies Aid and the Birthday Club. Her enjoyment was her family.
   Lucille is survived by her daughter, Dianne (Edward) Lynch; son, David (Vivian) Hoseck; grandchildren: Scott (Adeline) Lewis, Julie (Adam) Trok, and Carrie (John) Wooden; great-grandchildren: Ashley Lewis, Alyssa Lewis, Carson Trok, Mackenna Trok, and William Wooden; three sisters: Ruth Johnson, Lois Luri, and Phyllis Olsen; and two brothers: William (Darolene), and Paul (Shirley) Holmlund.    She was preceded in death by her husband, Waldemar; her parents; brother, Ellsworth Holmlund; and sister, Bernice Moravetz.
Memorial contributions may be made to Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Canby; Hi-Park Chapel Fund, Hi-Park Care Center, Red Wing; or First Covenant Church, Red Wing.

Virginia Hovland

   Services for Virginia Hovland, 81, of Canby will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday March 28 at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Canby with Pastor Katherine Rood officiating.
   Burial will be in St. Stephen's Lutheran Cemetery.
   Bruce Melby is the vocalist singing "I Need Thee Every Hour" and "On Eagles' Wings". The congregation will sing "He Leadeth Me" and "Children of the Heavenly Father". Karen Olsen is the organist. Tina Sherman will give a reading. The casketbearers are Virginia's seven grandsons: Timothy Hovland, Todd Hovland, James Hovland, Jr., Richard Hovland, Benjamin Hovland, Blaine Merritt and Tad Merritt.
   Visitation will be held on Sunday from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Birk Funeral Home in Canby with a prayer service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue on Monday one hour prior to the services at the church.
   Virginia died on Thursday March 24, 2005 at the Senior Haven Nursing Home in Canby.  
   Virginia Irene Hovland was born on Nov. 30, 1923, in Jamestown, N.Y., to George and Alma Ovidia (Samuelson) Schuver. She was confirmed in 1937 at St. Stephen's Lutheran Church in Canby. She graduated from Canby High School. On July 5, 1941 she was married to Milo Hovland in Marshall, Minnesota. The couple lived in Minneota from July to November of 1941, Redwing from November of 1941 to March of 1942, and then lived on their farm north of Burr, Minnesota until 1996, when they moved to Canby. She lived at Southview Assisted Living in Canby from October of 2002 to 2003, and then moved into Senior Haven in June of 2003 where she lived until her death.
   Virgie was active over the years in the Burr Ladies' Aid, Florida U-Go-I-Go Extension Club, Sons of Norway, Canby V.F.W. Post 117 auxiliary, the Peden-Cole American Legion Auxiliary Post # 109 of Gary, SD and the He and She Bowling Group. She took pleasure in being the"hired man" on the farm and was quoted in a newspaper article about her saying, "I enjoy being the handiest gadget my husband has on the farm."
   Knitting and sewing were Virgie?s hobbies. She made Raggedy Ann and Andy dolls for her daughter and three granddaughters for Christmas in 1972, which all the ladies still treasure.  Later she made needlepoint Christmas stockings for her other grandchildren to have as keepsakes.
   Virgie and four good friends organized a catering business called "The Catering Group", preparing and serving food for weddings, anniversaries, birthday parties, banquets, class reunions, and athletic banquets. Along with a partner, she established herself as an interior decorator with skills including wallpapering, painting, and totally refinishing old woodwork, often improvising with stripper and solutions they created.
   Virgie and her partner were among 1,000 ladies from across the state of Minnesota chosen for quality service, above and beyond the expected, as business people in the state, honored by Gov. Rudy Perpich at a banquet in Bloomington.
   Virgie is survived by her husband, Milo of Canby; her children: Quentin (Jane) Hovland of Clinton, Ill.; James (Shari) Hovland of Crofton, Neb.; Ronald Hovland of Sioux Falls, S.D.; Milo (Karen) Hovland, Jr. of Yankton, S.D.; and Patricia (Jeff) Merritt of Canby; her grandchildren: Timothy Hovland, Tara Hallman, Tina Sherman, Todd Hovland, Laura Curtis, James, Jr., and Richard Hovland, Benjamin and Nicole Hovland, Blaine, Quinn, Jana, Tad, Thea, and Morgan Merritt; her great-grandchildren: Matthew, Shelby and Luke Hallman, Lynne, Amanda, Kathryn, and Ethan Sherman, and Starr and Sky Hovland.

Edna Hughes

Edna H. Hughes, 92 of Barnesville died Monday in Innovis Health, Fargo.
Funeral Services were held Thursday, Oct. 27, 2005, St. James United Church of Christ with Pastor John Carpenter officiating. Lloyd Lindholm served as soloist accompanied by organist Rosie Carr. Pallbearers were her grandchildren, Marilyn Fahey, Lisa Meyer, Brian Hughes, Dustin Hughes, Travis Hughes and Jeremy Hughes.
Interment was at Prairie View Cemetery, Prairie View Township, Wilkin County, MN.
Edna, daughter of Benjamin and Clara (Moll) Braton, was born July 28, 1913, at her family's farm in Prairie View Township of Wilkin County. She was the youngest daughter and tenth in a family of thirteen children. Edna attended country school and grew to womanhood in the Barnesville area. At the age of 13 Edna began working summers as a nanny. Later the job developed into full time, serving four families in Barnesville and Fargo.
Edna married Leonard N. Hughes, also of Prairie View Township, on Dec. 30, 1937, at the Congregational Church in Barnesville. The couple made their home and farmed in eastern Prairie View Township. Over the years Edna cut and picked potatoes for area growers and worked at West Central Turkeys Inc. of Pelican Rapids before launching a career of caring for the elderly in her home. A career she continued for 40 years.
The Hughes' were members of St. James United Church of Christ. Edna taught Sunday school and was active in the St. James Ladies Guild and the memorial committee. She was also active with the Prairie View Pioneer Daughters and served as an adult 4H leader.
Edna eagerly anticipated the birth of each grandbaby and cherished the lifetime of experiences they have shared with her. Playing the piano and knitting were her method of relaxing. She became known for her caramel rolls, fried chicken, angel food cake baked on top of the stove and her gardening skills.
Mr. Hughes died in 1972. Edna continued to live on the farm until 1997 when she moved into a cozy apartment in Barnesville. It was there she lived until the time of her death. She was determined to maintain her independent lifestyle and accomplished it through the help of family and friends.  Her sense of humor and sharp wit earned her the title of "resident sweetheart".
She is survived by two sons, Maynard (Lois) of Canby and Gregory (Kristi) of Barnesville; six grandchildren, Marilyn (Lawrence) Fahey of Leonardville, Md., Lisa (Mike) Meyer of Lakeville, Brian (Laina) Hughes of Sauk Centre, Dustin, Travis and Jeremy Hughes all of Barnesville; four great-grandchildren, Garrett Fahey at home in Leonardville, Travis, Trent and Natalie Meyer all at home in Lakeville. She is also survived by one brother, Loren (Mabel) Braton of Barnesville and many nieces and nephews.
Edna is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Leonard; her son, James; her grandson, Kevin John; six brothers, Alfred, Samuel, Walter, Thorald, and Norman and Delos; and five sisters, Roszella Christensen, Gladys Morben, Marguerite Garrison, Catherine Scheffler and Irene Scheffler.
