Visit to a Victorian Field Pond in Sussex

I am on the committee of the Sussex ARG and edit their newsletter. In November we had a large Victorian field pond restored for the benefit of the resident great crested newts and other wildlife.  This was done with grant from the Lottery and the Herpetofauna Conservation Trust.  GCNs are also present in a small pond in the Walled Garden with smooth newts and frogs.  We also have a good colony of grass snakes and adders have been reported, though these creatures can, of course, be elusive if a large party is walking round.

The field trip is on Sunday, 2 April at 3pm meeting at the reception of the Pestalozzi International Village on the south side of Sedlescombe village north of Hastings.  The map reference is TQ788173.

The afternoon will be a good opportunity for a walk in fine countryside looking at all the wildlife interest of the estate but particularly those associated with reptiles and amphibians.  If anyone wants to bring a net, we will try some surveying.  Tea and cakes will be available afterwards in the Village’s restaurant.

The Pestalozzi Village Trust is an educational charity and the walk is organised by the Friends of the Estate.  We ask for a £1 contribution from anyone who is not a member of the Friends and tea and cake costs a further £1.  All proceeds go back into managing the estate and the work of the Village.

This will also be an opportunity, of course, to meet members of SARG that turn out.
