Folkestone Warren

A break in the weather and a mad dash down to Folkestone Warren.

The cliff tops above the warren are beginning to look more and more interesting. They certainly support a very healthy population of viviparous lizard, including this fellow who was making sure that I didn't get too close!

While scrabbling around the top of the cliffs I also came across this interesting object...

insect pupal case

What is it?!

I think that it is probably an empty insect pupal case. However, I'm not sure if it is butterfly, moth or fly. Can anyone help?

I have recently been trying to get a better idea of what the Warren looked liked at the beginning of the 20th Century - old postcard make excellent reference points and there appear to be many available on eBay for The Warren. The painting below is an artist rendition of the Warren published in C.1913. Although a little unclear (after being reduced in size), what is apparent is that the Warren *was* heavily scrubbed over (at least in part) towards the turn of the last century. If sand lizard were successfully breeding at this time, they must have been somewhere else. The top of the cliffs...?
