Make The Adder Count Proect

This spring The Herpetological Conservation Trust (HCT) is coordinating an adder census. This is a pilot project for what we hope will become an annual count of adders across the whole country.

Although the adder is Britain's most widespread snake, there is a strong body of evidence that suggests the species is suffering from a long-term national decline. The project will test the feasibility of an annual monitoring scheme that will:

1. More accurately quantify the extent of decline.

2. Strengthen the case for, and guide, proactive conservation.

3. Provide a yardstick against which to measure the effectiveness of any future conservation effort.

The project complements Kent's very own 'Adders in Decline' initiative. I am helping to coordinate the project in the SE. So if you would like to get involved and you live in Kent, Surrey, Sussex or London please get in touch! For more details about the project visit the RAUK website.
