Historical Sand Lizard Records - Eric Philp's Atlas

A quick update to yesterdays' entry regarding sand lizards in Kent.

I neglected to include notes that Eric Philp offered in his 1998 Provisional Atlas of the Reptiles and Amphibians of Kent published by the Kent Field Club (Vol. 15, Part 2). Eric Philp was the County Recorder for Kent from 1956 to 1990 and probably knows the county better than anybody else. I'm hoping to contact Eric over the coming weeks to research this subject more. However, it is useful to summarise the information that Eric presented in his atlas.

Eric indicates that the sand lizard is the only species of reptile (or amphibian) that he specifically spent time surveying for. Most of his other herpetofauna observations were either made while surveying for other groups (especially plants and invertebrates), or records passed on to him from colleagues and members of the public. Eric has spent some time searching for sand lizard at Sheerness, Sandwich, near Folkestone, Folkestone Warren and Whitstable. However, no sand lizard were ever seen.
