The Churchill Newts...

Over the past couple of years I have been inspiring my neighbour to look out for amphibians in his pond and surrounding garden...

Well, in 2005, whilst in the garden one evening his dog started playing with something moving around on the gravel and much to his amazement he had found a large newt. That was our first ever record of great crested newts in our area. Then, to my surprise, in 2006 another 2 great crested newts turned up and were walking around my neighbours patio trying to escape but had difficulty climbing the step..! On both occasions I photographed the belly patterns in order to keep a record.

Even more to my surprise, whilst taking the shopping out of my car recently, my neighbour approached to tell me he had yet another newt on his patio. This time I thought it might be the return of one of last years residents but alas, it was indeed another 'new' male to join the Churchill clan... And so the records continue...
