First Frogspawn Spotted in Cornwall!

The UK Phenology Network is reporting that frogspawn was spotted in Cornwall on October 26th.

Early activity in amphibians is not unusual. Indeed, I often observe newts in my garden pond during the Christmas holidays. In Kent, the earliest frogspawn is reported around mid-February - often on Valentine's Day.

You do have to wonder on the likely survival of spawn that is deposited just before the worst of the winter weather bites.

If you see any amphibian or reptile winter activity please let us know by posting your observations on our on-line recording form.
