Unusual Kent Records

There have been many unusual records in Kent over the years. Deryk Frazer once reported a baby elephant that had been washed up on the beach! Yesterday I had a call from Alex Dawson, Team Leader for the Sevenoaks Environmental Protection Unit. Alex had an interesting report of a rather large lizard...

The lizard was 3 and a half feet long and missing its two front feet. Although unfortunately dead, the animal was apparently well fed. Alex didn't know whether the lizard had been left to die or dumped dead, but its posture and position suggested that the animal had been alive for at least a little time.

While clearly a monitor lizard, I'm still trying to establish a species identification. Alex has suggested that it may be a Savannah Monitor. These animals are kept as pets more often than you would think. Pictures courtesy of Alex Dawson.
