Producing
this documentary changed my life. For one thing, it made me a Sacred
Harp singer. It won "Best Radio Program" from the Southern
Educational Communications Association (SECA) in 1980 and was an
Honorable Mention from CPB. Over the years I have been asked many
times if I would make it available. In December 2003 the film adaptation
of "Cold
Mountain" and an extended report on All Things Considered caused
me to go back to my original tapes. I received a note from the ATC
reporter that the NPR crew had listened to my work in preparation
for their story. In the spirit of sharing the richness of Sacred Harp,
I have decided to convert segments of the documentary to mp3 files
and publish them here. In the pages below, all the songs and interviews
are listed in their original broadcast order. Broadband internet users
can either listen to the selections or download the files. I plan
to make CDs of the entire documentary available, using higher-quality
AIFF files instead of the mp3s here, for a small fee. If you would
