I am searching for information on John H. Cabiness. He is the father of Henry Y. Cabiness, who was born approximately 1838. Henry was married twice. On Henry's marriage certificate for his first marriage to Sarah E. Allen on November 16, 1860, it lists Henry's parents as John and Elizabeth Cabiness. Henry was married in Halifax County, VA, where he was listed as a resident on his marriage license. Henry and Sarah had two children, daughters, Luna, b. 1866 and Mary Elizabeth, b. 1869, who later marry Puryear brothers, William Henry and Alexander, respectively. On the certificate for Henry's second marriage to Mary Jane Curran Williams in June of 1872, his parents are listed as John H. and Lisa Cabiness (both dead). This marriage took place in Granville County, NC. It is my feeling that the difference in the mother's name for both his licenses is merely a misinterpretation by a transcriber. I do believe that John only married once and his wife's name was Elizabeth.
Henry enlisted in the Confederate army in July, 1861, in Halifax. He was still in Halifax at the time of the 1870 census. He is married two years later, however, in Granville County, NC, where it is believed he lived for some time before moving back to Virginia to reside and eventually die and be buried on a farm in Skipwith, VA (Mecklenburg Co). According to Henry's daughter, Luna's, death certificate, she and her father were both born in Granville County, NC. It is my belief that she was probably born in Halifax County, considering her parents married there and were still there 10 years after their marriage. Her father, however, may very well may have been born in Granville County.
I have no information regarding any other children of John and Elizabeth Cabiness. Based on the information I have with regard to my Cabiness relatives, they have been documented in Halifax, VA, Mecklenburg, VA and Granville County, NC. It has been believed, based on notes in my late great-grandmother's family journal, that my Cabiness line descends from Matthew Cabiness, Sr. This, however, has yet to be proven. I am missing a generation of the Cabiness family to determine if that is true.

If anyone can help me locate any information on John and Elizabeth, I would be grateful as this would solve a mystery that has spanned the years of my research. I can be reached at ssmurphy5@hotmail.com.
