Poll CloseBig Winner: Europe Engulfed
(81)
The Second Tier: War of the Ring (50), Ardennes '44 (35), Sword of Rome (30) Didn't Do So Well: ASLSK (16), DAK2 (11), Victoria Cross (8), Gettysburg (6), Downtown (6), The Devil's Horsemen (2) Plus a new poll ... You can read my thoughts on most of these games
in my recent Year in Review article, but a few additional
comments:
That EE was the big winner was not a shock; early on it had almost two-thirds of the total vote, which tailed off a bit, but never went under a third - impressive for a game that is not simple. Obviously, I love the game too. I was also pleased to see Ardennes '44 do so well, I think it's a great game but I never really thought it would get wide traction. Sword of Rome is a fun game with some issues, but overall still one of the better games of the year. Obviously, I would not have rated War of the Ring rate so highly, but the strong showing was unsurprising. I've been down on it of late, but it's certainly not a terrible game - just unfortunately average, albeit one with wide exposure. I've mostly enjoyed many of my plays of it, but it may well peter out before it gets to 10 plays. I think Gettysburg and Victoria Cross were definitely underrated. These guys are very solid games, I think, especially if you pick up the "experimental" rules for Gettysburg from Columbia's web site. As for Downtown - well, it's very complicated. ASLSK - I doubt too many ASL junkies are regular readers here, and maybe I should have left it off. I wonder if the two folks who voted for The Devil's Horsemen will own up to it and let me know why? Anyway a new, hopefully somewhat amusing poll is up. Posted: Sunday - January 16, 2005 at 12:57 PM |
