1) When I run the application, I get an error "-1728" and nothing really happens. Why? or Is iPhoto Extractor File Vault Compatible?

If you've tried to run iPhoto Extractor on your system with File Vault enabled - you will get the error:

An AppleScript Error Occured
Finder got an error: Can't get name of alias "your disk path ". number -1728

Unfortunately - File Vault works in a special way. It creates an encrypted disk image upon which to store your account files. It looks the same as every other account, but when AppleScript tries to determine the paths to the folders (source or destination), it can't and the error happens. I've been doing research on how to either work with File Vault or to detect it and fail more gracefully. I'll update the application when I find ways around this. My only suggestion in the meantime is to disable File Vault, run the extract and then enable it again (I know - not my favourite answer either); or to drag the iPhoto library you want to work on to the Shared folder, then use an account that does not have File Valut enabled (create an account if you need to), then run the extract from that account. You can use the Shared folder for the destination as well and then import into your fresh libarary (or backup etc.) from that extracted library in the Shared folder.

2) Tiger Compatible?

I've installed Tiger (Mac OS X 10.4) and find that the "Pro" application won't allow folders to be added to the list for extract. The error message I get is "File <path>: wasn't found. (-43) ".

This has been corrected in the 2.0b11 and later versions. It was caused by a misuse of a buggy Applescript command output. This command was corrected in Tiger and ended up breaking the application.

3) When I run the application - I get an error dialog saying "An error occurred writing to the log file 1"

This error is due to Tiger itself and the way it handles window closures. The error window appears if you open the Log window and then close it, then run the extract. Applescript Studio in Tiger has difficulty reopening the window. This is fixed in 2.0b10.

4) Why doesn't the Finder show the same amount of pictures that iPhoto Extractor said it extracted?

It's not unusual for iPhoto extractor to report more pictures extracted than a simple count in the Finder for the "Pictures" folder will show. This is because iPhoto Extractor also counts the pictures it has stored in the "Duplicates" folders. Since these foilders are nested, the Finder is not counting items inside these folders when it tells you how many items are in the selected folder.

For example:

Under the Pictures Folder you could have:
Picture1.jpg
Picture2.jpg
Duplicates (folder)

Inside Duplicates you could have:
Picture1.jpg
Picture2.jpg

So in total there are 4 picture files (as counted by iPhoto Extractor), yet the finder would only see 3 items in the Pictures folder.

5) Why doesn't the total extracted equal what iPhoto was telling me I had for pictures?

When you have iPhoto open - it will tell you how many pictures are in your library (select the library and a status will appear near the bottom of the window, telling you how many pictures you have). If you used this library as the source for iPhoto Extractor, the summary of extraction results at the end of the program execution might tell you a different number (larger or smaller).

If iPhoto Extractor has extracted a smaller number of pictures than iPhoto had reported, it's possible not all pictures were extracted. Check the log, and see what pictures were skipped. You can either tell iPhoto Extractor to not skip any pictures (see the preferences), or add to the list of expected file extensions (say you have RAW pictures with an NEF extension), add that extension to the list of file types to extract.

If iPhoto Extractor has extracted more pictures that you thought you had, it's possible that some of the thumbnails have been extracted (they will not be extracted if they are properly located in the Thumbnails folders - created automatically by iPhoto). However, if files have been moved about by the Finder , it's possible these thumbnails too could have been moved out of their normal destinations. It's also possible that iPhoto really didn't know how many pictures you had, and this might be one reason why you are running iPhoto Extractor.
