In 2002 i spent 6 weeks in europe at the end of an around-the-world trip, touring the countryside, sleeping on overnight trains, cramming into youth hostels, and hopping between big cities. but i never set foot in the alps. in the summer of 2005 i set out to change all that; my new objective: tour 3 alpine locations in two weeks and run in two mountain races, known as "skyraces".
My father buzz, his girlfriend lisa, and friend dan were also interested, so we flew into milan, rented a car, and traveled together to the following locations:
Italian Dolomites for 4 days
objective: dolomites skyrace 22km (3rd to summit, 13th overall)
Zermatt Switzerland for 4 days
objective: climb the matterhorn, trail run, sample cuisine
Chamonix France for 7 days
objective: la plagne 6000d sky race 55km (6th place), drink wine, frequent the local boulangerie (bakery) for fresh croissants and baguettes.
