Grounds for Sculpture
Hamilton, NJ
A spectacular garden build around a collection of large scale
contemporary sculptures. The installation takes a particularly playful approach
in as much as some of the artwork is hidden from plain sight within the rugged
landscape and needs to be discovered. The visitor is encouraged to stray off the
beaten path to go play hide and seek with the sculptures. The luscious
landscaping makes the park appear bigger than it seems as there always appear to
be new corners to turn and passages to follow - often leading back to areas
where one has already been before, but approaching it from a new angle. Being
able to discover some sculpture from different angles at different occasions
makes an impressive case for the "architectural" quality of sculpture as a 3
dimensional medium which does not have a natural, obvious viewpoint and often
can't be looked at in isolation since it strongly interacts with its
surrounds.
