The Gates
Installation in Central Park by Christo & Jeanne Claude
One of the most amazing and remarkable aspects of this particular
event is the complete absence of any corporate sponsors and the heavy
advertising and promotion activities that usually come with events of such
magnitude. The fact that the artists pay for the undisclosed costs of the
installation by themselves is one of the most provocative sides of this huge
public arts project, in times when taking other peoples money has become a
gesture of inclusion for any significant public project, wether one actually
needs the money or
not.

One
of the obvious benefits of the project is to attract people to mingle in Central
Park and to see it in a season when the park is usually not as populated.
